SPIDER-MAN: NO WAY HOME Tops $1.77 Billion Worldwide; Will Swing Past AVATAR's U.S. Record Imminently

There's more good news for Spider-Man: No Way Home today as another successful weekend means the wall-crawler will imminently swing past Avatar in North America to become the third-biggest movie ever.

Spider-Man: No Way Home ended up being beaten by Moonfall at the North American box office this weekend, but third place during its eighth weekend of release is still a spectacular feat. At this stage, its days of breaking records are nearly at an end, but the wall-crawler will take down one final foe before wrapping up its domestic run.

The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed that an additional $9.6 million haul this weekend means Spider-Man: No Way Home currently has $749 million in ticket sales. Now, it's less than $1 million shy of topping the $749.8 million grossed by James Cameron's Avatar during its original run in 2009 (a feat it should achieve within the next day or two).

In third place, Spider-Man: No Way Home would sit behind Avengers: Endgame ($858.3 million) and Star Wars: The Force Awakens ($936.6 million), two films it can't/won't beat.

Considering the pandemic is still hurting box office takings, this is an amazing achievement and it should finish up with around $760 million. Globally, Avatar doesn't need to sweat the Marvel Comics superhero as it's earned a massive $2.84 billion since first being released. Still, with $1.02 billion overseas, Spider-Man: No Way Home is the #6 movie of all time with a $1.77 billion haul worldwide. Remember, it managed to do all of this without ever being released in Chinese theaters.

Sony Pictures has yet to announce a Digital or Blu-ray release date for the threequel, though we know it is coming to those formats at some point. The studio has doubled down on the theatrical experience during the pandemic, forgoing shortened release windows.

If Spider-Man: No Way Home's success is any indication, that's working pretty well for them!

Being number 3 domestically, having passed 1b overseas, being sixth highest grossing overall, in a pandemic, without China is one hell of a feat. Never did I expect that.

I don't expect The Batman to do such numbers, but I do have faith in it's Box Office too.

@bkmeijer - I wonder how the numbers would jump up, if Sony gave Tobey and Andrew in the promo material.

Not all people knew about them like we did.

@UXASIS - showing their villains and not them might have been the best strategy.

Think that really played into the word-of-mouth and general buzz that may have pulled more people to cinemas than if they had shown them.

Oh, well, now that Disney blamed the pandemic for the box office numbers on Shang-Chi and Eternals it kinda makes me think about the direction on Phase 4.

Even Tom Holland fulfilled his contract and it'll take a time to fix that, mapping out Spidey's story. Now, the only one household name is Hemsworth, or Ruffalo, depending on your personal viewing.

I think Feige didn't expect this level of support and it kinda shows the appetite that people already have for the characters they already love.

@MadThanos - "Oh, well, now that Disney blamed the pandemic for the box office numbers on Shang-Chi and Eternals it kinda makes me think about the direction on Phase 4."

When you only want to focus on the Exception rather than the Rule 🤦🏽‍♂️

Literally every other movie suffered or got WAY less than they would have gotten without a pandemic, but you think this massive success nullifies the very legitimate reason the other MCU movies didn't do as well? 🤨

Never mind the fact that, in North America, all 4 of the MCU movies made it into the top 6 box office earners for 2021, the other 3 MCU films were a movie that came 4 years too late and 2 newcomers to the franchise. And even with the pandemic and no China release, Shang-Chi and Eternals still got really close to Ant-man and Doctor Strange's debut results 🤷🏽‍♂️

@lordSTALE - yeah, anyway, at least we know one thing for sure. Feige will have a lot of work from now on to make people love those new characters.

It's going to be hard to explain to the regular viewer that RDJ retired from the part and that Tom Holland wants a better deal.

But hey, do you want more Spidey? how about some... Moon Knight? (Which looks stunning but you know my point).

lordSTALE - 2/8/2022, 12:28 AM
@MadThanos - They already love them, now you've switched to applying your own personal opinion to "everyone". My god, you're sad 🤦🏽‍♂️

That's actually incredibly easy to explain. RDJ's character freaking died, and he did the same thing Holland is currently doing after Iron Man 3 was released. Just because it's complicated for you, it doesn't mean the people with common sense wouldn't understand it immediately 🤭

Everyone wants more Spidey and Moon Knight has a lot of hype, are you trying desperately to make a point here? Iron Man used to be a B lister, but now he's an icon because of Marvel Studios, Moon Knight could easily get that same treatment. And Spidey currently has the biggest solo movie by a massive margin and this is after two other very successful movies. Spidey has always been bigger than Iron Man/RDJ, this was an epic fail on your part 😂😂😂

If SMNWH came anywhere CLOSE to topping either Titanic or Avatar, you can bet James Cameron would do everything in his power to rerelease those movies to retain his #1 and #3 positions. He's that kind of guy. Great director. Not so great personally, if multiple reports are to be believed.

Again, congratulations to everyone involved with making SMNWH a success! (Including anyone who bought a ticket! This is our victory too! YAY!)

My daughter saw it last night (3rd viewing) with several of her friends at a movie theater that was rented out for a birthday party. Nearly two months after the film's release, they can't get enough Spidey.

Avatar was in cinemas a whole year, then they kept re-releasing it.

“Now, it's less than $1 million shy of topping the $749.8 million grossed by James Cameron's Avatar during its original run in 2009“

“Globally, Avatar doesn't need to sweat the Marvel Comics superhero as it's earned a massive $2.84 billion since first being released.”

So is the domestic box office only counted during its first release in 2009, and the worldwide box office includes all of the re-releases? Or am I reading that wrong?
