SPIDER-MAN: NO WAY HOME Writers Confirm Mysterio And Rhino Were Considered For MCU's Sinister Six

Spider-Man: No Way Home writers Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers explain why the Sinister Six didn't assemble in the threequel, revealing some of the other members they considered introducing in the movie.

Spider-Man: No Way Home pits three Spider-Men against five sinister villains, including the Green Goblin, Doctor Octopus, Electro, Sandman, and The Lizard. There was no sixth member, leaving many fans to wonder why the threequel missed out on the opportunity to make use of the Sinister Six.

The Vulture or a returning Mysterio could have easily got involved, while Venom being in the MCU but never crossing paths with Tom Holland's Spider-Man also robbed this "team" of a sixth member.

Now, Spider-Man: No Way Home writers Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers have confirmed that they considered at least two more bad guys for the threequel's final battle. "Yes, there was [talk of Mysterio or Rhino returns]," the former confirmed during an interview on The Q&A with Jeff Goldsmith (via ComicBook.com). "Yeah, there was definitely talk, like, 'Who is the Sinister Six here?'"

"If you want six, you can always say Venom was the sixth [member] if you want. He's in the tag, he made it [into the MCU], but he never made it out of Mexico [Laughs]. There was always that talk of, 'Should we be doing officially the Six?' I think what's so fun about working off the [comic book] canon is you can reinvent, and we know that people know the canon, but maybe everything doesn't line up...was Venom the sixth, or was there someone else lurking?"

"Who were some of those shapes in the sky that's coming through?" McKenna teased.

Silhouettes of Mysterio, Rhino, Scorpion, Kraven the Hunter, and more all appeared in the sky above the Statue of Liberty, though there's nothing to suggest any of them managed to break through and remain in the MCU. However, a piece of the Venom symbiote has been left behind, which would seem to hint that we're going to see a new take on the alien costume in Spider-Man 4 and beyond.

Who would you have liked to see join the MCU's Sinister Six?

The real Sinister Six should consist of Vulture, Shocker, Mysterio, Scorpion, Hob Goblin, and Kraven all bankrolled by Fisk. But I feel like it should be a Defenders vs. Sinister Six film instead.

@SonOfAGif - I'm kinda hoping for an MCU Ock, Vulture, Mysterio, Shocker, Scorpion and Ned Leeds as Hobgoblin. Think they should keep Fisk for the fourth movie, with maybe Alistair Smythe/Spider-Slayer as his paid muscle

I'd convinced myself Vulture was going to be in it. Would have been great to see Keaton sharing the screen with Defoe and Molina.

@Orphix - But why would he fight Spider-Man again?

@Unites - same reason Sandman would fight his Spider-Man again…

@Orphix - I think the main thing for me that was missing from No Way Home was a Holland villain.

@dragon316 - BUT, they still fought… I’m sure the writers would’ve came up with a reason.

@Orphix - My prediction was there would be a new minor villain like Chameleon that opened the movie, then later took advantage of the mayhem to team up with the displaced villains

Tom not having one of his own villains was alleviated by Goblin becoming his villain, and it was all about multiverse anyway. I suppose the tag counts but dude didn’t antagonize nobody but the bartender.

Wouldn’t mind seeing mysterio back but rhino would have been useless pointless he didn’t die he didn’t know who spiderman was all villians came back did know who spiderman was and died of mysterio was comeback have him act like mysterio don’t mysterio fake having team people in background helping him out make his illusions happen comic book mysterio doesn’t act like that

You can stretch and Say that everything that happens to Peter in this movie is because of Mysterio so we can count him as the sixth villain, as for rhino it woouldve been redundant but Damn if i don't think he should've been brought back to reedem him, the waste of Giamatti in that movie is atrocious

Surely Rhino would have gotten the ARC Reactor along with an old armor seized from Stark Industries (Iron Monger)

I for one still want to see the official sinister six handled on the big screen eventually.

There's no way we won't get another shot at them in the next trilogy. Maybe the 6th movie? lol I just want to see the classic line up. The fact that we had a sinister 4 of variants was a little underwhelming. Hoping for the best.

Kinda wanna see Mysterio return for a proper MCU Sinister Six, but Rhino could've worked. Guess they just wanted to keep it at one villain from each of the Raimi and Webb movies

The story probably would have been different in that particular regard, if they chose bring the Rhino back, but now I can't help, but to imagine Spidey "curing" him.

"Just come out of the armor, dude"

You could look at Far From Home and No Way Home as two parts of a long movie, since there's virtually no time jump between them. In that case, FFH/NWH is one long multiversal Sinister Six movie. Mysterio thinks he's lying about the multiverse, but unwittingly knocks the first domino in getting the rest together.

@SheepishOne - this is true and I like this idea a lot

I half expect Mysterio to return down the line. EDITH's words were very carefully chosen when Beck "died", having only confirmed, "All illusions are down, Peter." Having said that, having him return for this movie would seem to soon unless he was the real main villain again orchestrating it all.
