SPIDER-MAN: NO WAY HOME Writers Reveal That There Was Talk Of Charlie Cox Suiting-Up As Daredevil

Charlie Cox only made a brief cameo appearance in Spider-Man: No Way Home as Matt Murdock, but it's now come to light that there were plans for the "really good lawyer" to suit-up as Daredevil.

Rumors that Charlie Cox was set to reprise his role as Matt Murdock from Netflix's Daredevil series in Spider-Man: No Way Home were doing the rounds for some time before the movie's release, and sure enough, the British actor returned for a brief cameo as Peter Parker's "really good lawyer."

Cox only featured in one scene, but was still given the opportunity to demonstrate his lightning-fast reflexes by catching a brick that was thrown through May's window. It was a memorable moment included to set-up future appearances for the Man Without Fear, but it's now come to light that there was talk of the character returning in-costume as the Devil of Hell's Kitchen.

While being interviewed for The Q&A Podcast with Jeff Goldsmith, writers Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers revealed that there was "absolutely" talk of Cox returning for more than just his one scene, but it was decided that there was already enough going on in the final act.

"That was the challenge with this movie: bringing all these other characters in," Sommers said. "We love these characters, and you would love to see them do all kinds of stuff, but the question is, what is there room for? I could watch any of these characters we brought in just do a whole other movie by themselves or in some various combination, but we have to, ultimately, service the story of our Peter Parker and our Spider-Man, no matter how tempting it is."

It's true that having Daredevil join the fray during the Statue of Liberty battle might have been overkill, but it would have been nice to see a little more of Murdock in some capacity.

Cox is expected to return as the Man Without Fear for his own Disney+ series at some point, and is rumored to appear in both She-Hulk and Echo.

To summarize, movie writers discussed what to write before writing.

@UncleHarm1 - At least it's not the normal "Charlie Cox was ALMOST going to suit up" headline that you normally see

It would have been amazing to see that, but it didn't detract from the movie either and I can see why they didn't include that.

Damn, Howard Hesseman, AKA Dr. Johnny Fever, among many other good roles, passed away. Sad day.

All that really matters is that he's back. We'll see more of him.

I’m glad they chose not to have him appear in his suit. That would have been distractingly weird.

IMO, and I know I'm in the super minority, I would've liked NWH to be more grounded. When I saw Matt, I really wished that he was the one kicking the lizard and not the other Spider-men.

To me, it would've been more exciting for Daredevil and Spiderman to team up. I imagined while I was watching the movie, that Daredevil would be the one helping him.

While of course it was exciting to have a spider-verse movie, they really did it as a fan service only. I get that this is the main reason fans loved it. But they appeared as how a guest star appears in a tv show, instead of feel really part of the movie. Had it been Daredevil, would've made the movie"smaller" in scale, but also more grounded with the story as how he was helping him legally, but then also joined the battle.

But that's just me.

@colonel179 - Sorry, but like or not, Tobey and Andrew propelled Tom's arc and helped him become Spider-Man. It could've just been fan service, but they helped the narrative, and even had some small arcs themselves.

When he does put on the suit, I wonder if they will up the scale of his powers like they did Kingpin. A classic rooftop backflip will be fun to see

It is eternally hilarious that they settled on having Matt show up with zero introduction or explanation, deliver some completely anticlimactic legal news/advice, catch a flying brick, and then bounce from the entire movie with zero explanation or follow up

It is seriously the type of awesome and shameless moment only Marvel could ever get away with and really might be my favorite cameo in any of these things

The scene introducing Matt should have been in court with the people of New York City vs Parker. That scene, plus the pressure from being back at school, plus these new villains, should have led to Peter than seeking out Strange because it all became too much for him.

Matt Murdock landed possibly the biggest case of his career defending Peter Parker. Now he doesn’t even remember.

Hopefully he suits up and teams up with Spidey sometime in the next trilogy.

Didn't Tom Holland talk about there being a scene where Peter discusses being a hero at a table? Was the "I'm a good lawyer" cut down?
MyCoolYoung
MyCoolYoung - 1/31/2022, 12:05 AM
The only way I could've saw him suiting up is if he would've patrolled trying to see if Peter was pure of heart but even then that sounds bad.

We could've gotten more legal stuff but that would've slowed the pace. Leave any extras for the release and any subsequent appearances
