During Spider-Man: No Way Home's press tour, Tom Holland made it clear he was unsure about returning for Spider-Man 4. Many wondered if the actor was publicly negotiating for a bigger deal with Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures, and after the success of the threequel, we'd bet on them being willing to pay the actor whatever he likes!
For now, though, it appears Holland's biggest priority is taking a break after a very busy few years. Despite the pandemic, the actor quickly jumped from Cherry and his previous MCU appearances to shoot Spider-Man: No Way Home and Uncharted back-to-back. Now, with just one final commitment in 2022, he's looking forward to stepping back from acting for a while.
Asked if he plans to go back to the web-slinger's world in the near future, he responded: "I am going back to shoot a TV show for Apple which I'm really excited about. It's a very, very challenging role written by the amazing Akiva Goldsman, and I think the script is some of the best I've ever read."
"I'm really, really excited to do that," Holland continued. "But I can confidently say, after I finish that TV show, I will be taking a break."
While Sony has previously pushed to release a new Spider-Man movie every two years, it's clear we won't be seeing Spider-Man 4 in 2023 at this rate! For starters, Jon Watts is moving on to Fantastic Four, so a decision will be made to either wait (which could see Spidey's next movie pushed even further down the calendar) or to find a new filmmaker. Either way, we're going to have to be patient.
Marvel Studios has previously confirmed that Spider-Man 4 is in active development. An animated series, Spider-Man: Freshman Year, is also coming to Disney+, but it's unknown if Holland will star.
