This, to me, is something that no movie exec has properly figured out. I am tired of waiting. My thoughts will be quick and to the point. Hollywood needs to figure out how to save Spider-Man. I'm about to help...
Let me begin by saying that I am a huge Spider-Man fan. I have been since before I could even read what was going on in the comics. That essentially makes me an expert on the subject. This blog is an attempt to single-handedly save this franchise, so I can one day brag at local bars about how I did this and received absolutely NO credit (prophecy)! I digress...
Spider-Man needs two things to happen in order to help this comic truly translate well on screen.
One: HE NEEDS TO THINK!!!!
As any real reader of the comic knows, half the battle of the Amazing Spider-Man is in his own HEAD! Viewers need to know what he's thinking while he's web-slinging from skyscraper to skyscraper, chasing villains around NYC, or sitting in his room trying to rest for the oncoming day after going through hell, while missing Aunt May's "dinner". The mask cannot translate emotion, but we can truly get a feel for Parker as we hear what he's thinking while doing the Amazing, Spectacular, Web of (?) things that he deals with. His personality can be traced this way, and I think it'd do him a TON of good in relation to the viewers, while simultaneously doing away with those unnecessary/ "forced" scenes that take time from the fun of being a hero. I can easily see the pop up's in his head about supporting characters that he's obligated to while dealing with the daily tasks of stopping the bad guy. C'mon Hollywood- you can do this...
Two: HE NEEDS TO SHOW EMOTION THROUGH THE MASK!!!
I do believe that Ryan Reynolds and crew have finally figured this out for the new Deadpool adaptation, and I think the Spider-Mans emotional eyes are just as important as accurate web shooters (I'm looking at you Sam Rami). This may seem impossible to do based on his original costume, but this can be where the MARVEL deal shines for Sony. He's going to a different world of characters, and with Guardians of the Galaxy, Thor, Dr. Strange (I'm geeking out by writing all of these titles- thanks MARVEL), and many other "off-world" areas in Marvel, I think he should get the thing that I have wanted to see since the Spider-Man in 2002- THE PROPER DEPICTION OF THE SYMBIOTE SUIT!
Let's face it- the Symbiote Spider-Man is the best 2nd string, comic-costume EVER. The Symbiote suit created a sleek design that was only suppose to run during the Secret Wars, but the popularity made it an instant fan-favorite that was too catchy to clip. Not only was it an interesting look, it created "The Superior Spider-Man" of the mid 80s. It enhances all abilities of Spider-Man, while bringing memory from other hosts, immunity from disease, infinite amounts of webbing, concealment for items (like the trusty camera), & the ability to react to the will of the host. Spider-Man wants normal clothing- the symbiote put him in normal clothes. This was an awesome attribute, and the costume alone is something that I'd love to see PROPERLY translated in film. The "spray painted" costume in Spider-Man 3 was blasphemous at best (I'm looking at you again Sam Rami), and it was a poor excuse for what should have been comic GOLD. I digress...
The reason that I'd like to see it (on top of what I just mentioned) is that it gives Spider-Man the ability to do something else not seen on film- EYE MOVEMENT VIA THE MASK!!! For those who don't know (check out: http://marvel.wikia.com/Klyntar), the Symbiote, now known as "Klyntar" is an alien organism that bonds to Peter Parker and feeds on his emotion and will. This can be extremely useful in gaining the emotional aspect of Spider-Man, while eliminating the need for mask removal.
Anger is usually shown in Spidey's face with the thicker, but more horizontal, eye. Happiness is shown with wider, more vertical eyes, and confusion is shown with the eyes going in different directions. This cannot be reasonably done with normal costume fabric (never mind the fact that the above pic IS the original costume), but the symbiote would be able to accomplish this, and give the viewer a sign of things to come...
In conclusion, I think that the Spider-Man franchise has suffered greatly from repetitive stories, uninteresting side-stories, and a lack of depth to Peter Parker. I believe that these suggestions would greatly improve the past problems, and give the fans what we've been missing since the decline after Spider-Man 2.
