SDCC '13: TASM 2 Producer Avi Arad Says The Vulture's "Time Will Come"

In an interesting interview with SHH, Arad discusses various elements of Marc Webb's upcoming sequel to The Amazing Spider-Man -- including which villains we may (or may not) see in future films, possibly leading to The Sinister Six.

A while back we exclusively revealed that Colm Feore would in fact be playing Adrian Toombes (aka The Vulture) in The Amazing Spider-Man 2. Now, director Marc Webb has since denied this (we'll see how it shakes out come movie time) but while chatting to SHH about various aspects of the film -- including Gwen Stacy's rumored death -- long time Marvel producer Avi Arad hints that we will at least see The Vulture at some point in the franchise, while also suggesting that there may be many more classic villain appearances in the horizon. Here are the relevant excerpts.

SHH: A lot of people want to see the Vulture still and I know that was an earlier plan and the Vulture offers something different—he offers flight which we haven't really seen yet.

Arad: I'm sure his time will come. (Note: Colm Feore is rumored to play Adrian Toomes in The Amazing Spider-Man 2, so the chance of seeing him don wings for the third movie is very likely at this time.)

SHH: Do you think you might bring back some of the other old villains now that you have brought back the Osborns in this movie? Doctor Octopus is a popular Spider-Man villain and Sandman is as well, both members of the Sinister Six, too.

Arad: Well, let's put it this way, when you see the movie, you tell me. But that's all I'm going to say.

Of course this isn't the first tease regarding future villains from SDCC this year, so it definitely seems as if Webb and co. have big plans for plenty more Spidey foes. What do you guys think of the prospect of seeing rebooted versions of Doc Ock, The Sandman, Venom etc?

Avi, how about you get the [frick] out of the room and let Webb do his thing.

You focused Sam to do Venom & the Black Suit for Spider-Man 3 and look how that turned out.

Let Webb do his thing. Directors do better when they have control of the film and not forced by producers.

I believe Raimi was gonna have Sir Ben Kingsley for Vulture. That would be awesome if Webb reconsidered that idea, Kingsley gets to play a real villain!!!

;P

But still while he was "the Mandarin" when we thought, he was amazing.

I don't see Patrick Stewart doing it.

Eventually I want to see the REAL Venom on the big screen, but until then I'm fine with them using other villains we haven't seen before.

I think they might be going the route of the Spectacular Spider-Man cartoon and having Oscorp be responsible for creating villains. It's possible that at the end or at some point in the movie, we might see a list of people Oscorp has enhanced or people who have worked with Oscorp. That would be a great way to introduce Ock, Sandman and the others without a lot of setup.

John Malkovich was gonna play Vulture in Spider-Man 4. That would've been cool. Hope that's who Feore is playing.

Sandy shouldn't be back cause he had waaaaay too much shine in a movie which should have been all about Venom.

And I really don't wanna see Goblin again. Neither Ock. The only one that deserves to return is Venom cause he was screwed over b4.

Spidey has a lot more villains to not be reusing everyone from the original trilogy. Its why I'm glad they're using Electro and Rhino now.

Have the sinister six form at the end of this movie, and give spidey the black suit so he actually has the power to defeat them all in third. Then you can bring Venom into the fourth movie. And make GG be the leader of the six, instead of Doc Ock.

Ya I think Webb gained full creative control like Nolan did with TDK because they wanted him back but he held back and negotiated a deal with Sony. The deal being limited studio interference

I'd like to see a different take on Doc Ock. After all, he is the big leader of the Sinister Six. I'd be okay if they replaced him with the Goblin, but I would still prefer Ock to make a reappearance.
As long as they don't adapt Superior Spider-Man....

IMO, Doc Ock & Sandman were done perfectly (minus Sandman being the "real" killer but anyway). Obviously we're getting Green Goblin again, but hopefully it's different enough. And I would like to see Venom, especially with the Ultimate origin.

The Sinister Six seems most likely the direction that the Spider-Man series is heading towards at this moment, with everything thrown at us thus far compiled with all the rumors and information gathered! So I think that we are going to get a Spider-Man vs The Sinister Six in the near future, it is all a matter of how they are going to approach it!

Also Director Marc Webb did say:

"You want to build out the possibility of something more. I don’t want to give away too much. I really don’t. I want to preserve The Surprise, which is always under attack. For the right reasons. People are very enthusiastic, and they’re curious, but it’s really difficult to let people get into that theater for the first time and experience it with that sense of awe and curiosity. I think that’s tragic. But … I’m a fan of The Sinister Six. I’ll say that. I think if you pay attention to the second movie, you’ll see hints of what’s to come."

I'm totally into seeing a Sinister 6 movie, but I'm not sure what line up they'd use. I'd LOVE to see Mysterio leading the pack along with Electro, Rhino, and Vulture if we get him. I don't think Goblin should be in the Six just because he seems too volatile and more of a stand alone villain. Ock I'd love to see again, as well as giving villains like Shocker and Chameleon a try. I think if you're gonna use Kraven in the 6, give him a movie as the solo villain first, maybe even have him kill the Lizard. That being said I REALLY don't want to see Lizard on the team.

I really don't think Avi should be anywhere around comic book movies at this point. His opinion stopped mattering after SM3. Let Webb do his thing and stop interfering.

I'm really hoping this one is good, it does look promising.

Chill out, Chloe. No doubt SM3 disappointed fans and those who made it, but TASM movie and franchise is shaping up beautifully, far better than the Raimi films (imo).

Say of Avi Arad what you will, but if he's responsible for Webb directing TASM, TASM2, and the 2 more films slated to complete this series, with all signs pointing to the Sinister Six, then I shower Arad with a boatload of gratitude.

Yes, reboot those villains as they were all wrong. Dock Ock is pure evil, not some nice guy that got possessed by a machine. Likewise, Sandman is just some crook. He's not some down on your luck guy just trying to help his daughter and HE DOES NOT CRY. Don't let me get started on Venom.
