Spider-Man Debate: One of earth's greatest heroes is an ordinary man?

You can't go anywhere on the internet these days without tripping over a "I hate the Spider-Man reboot" comment here and a "Thank goodness they are rebooting" chime there.

And deservingly so, Spider-Man, is, well, an American mythological icon. Let's face it, Batman and Spider-Man are top notch. Superman, arguably, is going the way of the dodo. He was the first, great, but ultimately, he spawned two more popular heroes in Batman and Spider-Man.

In 2002, I was so excited for Raimi's film. Then I saw it, accepted it, accepted the next one, and then was given Venom-lite, even more whiny Mary Jane, and Sandman did-it-all-along “Spider-Man 3.” I'll give Raimi credit: there ARE things about his Spider-Man trilogy that are good. I liked Dock Ock, the Goblin glider, Sandman was spot on (hated Stay Puft Sandman though),and the Spider-Man costume was all I thought it could be in film. I love the costume.

However, I couldn't stomach something, the very first time I saw “Spider-Man” on screen. I found my father’s Spider-Man (John Romita Sr/ Stan Lee era) comics when I was eight or nine years old. And it was magic ever since. I fell in love with Spider-Man, his villains, and the whole thing. I saw the 1960s cartoon, then the 80s, then the 90s (another catchy Spider-Man theme is born!), and well, was subjected to the Peter Parker/ Spider-Man we all know and love.

And which Spider-Man is that? It is the one who is not the biggest lame-o, crying, dancing in a jazz-club, crying over ONE woman from over 50 years of comics, a non-funny Spider-Man, Peter un-engaging Spider-Man.

Sitting in the theater, I could not help the fact that I wasn't watching Peter Parker. I was watching a poorly interpreted and again, UN-ENGAGING wooden performance by Tobey Maguire. I couldn't and to this day, can't stand it. Peter Parker is not always supposed to be in the dumps, stare-into-the headlights, dumbstruck with no personality. Sure, there were maybe spurts in Raimi's films, but it was just too off the mark for Peter Parker.

Don't believe me, look up articles on comic-creators who said the same thing. Peter Parker was not accurately portrayed in Raimi's films.

Other gripes you ask? Let me count the ways:

1) Cheese fest galore - I can't stomach some of the acting in the franchise. Watered down, for the kiddies. I hate it. I want natural acting.

2) Let's save Mary Jane not twice, but thrice times. Lazy, poor, let's get the seats filled in the theater writing - without exploring complex themes, inclusion of other Spider-Man sub-characters, loss of the potential of villains, etc, etc.

3) Venom - need I say more, arguably Spider-Man's most popular villain besides Green Goblin and Doc Ock - let's put him in there for 10 minutes, shrink him, then kill him, without having a cool fight scene. That fight scene was lame. They could have been scaling buildings, chasing eachother like SPIDERS, etc.

4) Could the real Green Goblin please stand up? Again, let's water it down for the mass audience, and lower the potential of Spider-Man's greatest and scariest enemy.

5) Did I mention paint-by numbers plot? Okay, I did.

I can't predict the future. All I know is when they announced this year they were rebooting it, I felt like I just got paroled. YES! I thought - give us the good ol' dweeb but spunk and intelligent Peter Parker who QUIPS at his opponents (ONE OF THE MOST ATTRACTIVE AND BEST ELEMENTS OF THE CHARACTER AND IT WAS LEFT OUT! I HATE THAT SO MUCH!). Give us a crime boss running the show with multiple villains, more of the Spider-Man characters, natural and better ACTING, Gwen, MJ, Betty Brant, a non-clown J Jonah Jameson, none of Sam Raimi's dumb brothers or kids in the movie!

Every Spider-Man fan has his/her dream Spider-Man movie in his/her head. I know the world isn’t perfect. I look at everything as it progresses. Batman came out in 1989, spawned its franchise, and was redone. I hope to look at Raimi's films the same way, good, exciting to see how they did the character for the first time, but ultimately missed the mark for whatever reasons.

I want this to be the “Batman Begins” of the Spider-Man franchise (RELAX! I just want the same quality, the same consideration, the better interpretation).

My hat’s off to Marc Webb and Andrew Garfield. Hopefully they knock it out of the park, without pressure of cashing in on dreams of “Twilight” money signs. Make it right, give us headache and inspiring action scenes, a funny and want to cheer for non-wussy Peter Parker. Let’s not forget the heart as well.

'Nuff Said.

Funny, you said that you found things you liked, yet proceeded to tear apart the movies.

Except for the third, the first two were really entertaining. No web shooters and cloned spiders were well done for an update. He quipped at the Goblin a few times. And it's realistic he didn't with Doc Ock as they were great fight scenes.
I agree that I tired of saving MJ every time.
As I always tell you guys, they have to keep it open to the whole public. It is also in the hands of a few who decide these things.
We all thought Burton's "Batman" was great, until "Begins." Well, there's also a risk that a re-boot will not do anything better.
If you want to appreciate Raimi's version, go watch the live action series from the late '70's. You will thank Raimi and Sony for truly righting a wrong.

i never understood why people have a problem with the organic webshooters. doesn't it make more sense?

why are people willing to believe that he genetically inherits the strength, speed, stamina, and ability to stick to any surface, from a spider...but not the webbing???

so people are not willing to accept that, but having a teenager create "webshooters", something else that doesn't exist in life, is totally believable? come on...

also, the crying argument is totally weak, and always has been. go back and watch the first two. he cries in completely normal circumstances. but i guess people watching and complaining are so tough that they wouldn't cry when their father figure dies. in the first two, he doesn't cry over Mary Jane at all I don't think. they don't even hook up until the end of the 2nd.

yes, he cries in the 3rd over her, but come on, he punched her when he wasn't himself. again, i guess people are just serious tough guys around here...i live with my girlfriend and we have a daughter. i would die for both of them. if i came home one night, drunk as hell, and punched her, and she up and left, i would [frick]ing cry.

this article mentions how it doesn't stick to the comics, but i guess you forgot all the times Peter has cried over Mary Jane in them, huh?

I'll give you Spidey 3, because that was just a horrible movie all around.

I agree with everything CorndogBurglar said except for Spider-Man 3 being Horrible all around. It was meh compared to the others but it still wasn't that bad.

@ Corndog: We usually see eye to eye but as for the Web shooters no. I Liked the organic cause I actually hate when he runs out and didn't want to waste Spider-Man kick ass time on him building crap. BUT I think that the shooters make more sense. If he got there ability to spin the web, he would shoot from his mouth or ass......not some tube that connects to his wrist.

He could create it though. He was a Teenager but he was a genius. The shooters just showed his craftiness and ingenuity. It's like Batman with no gadgets......you would be like okay....so he is a good fighter????

As for the Reboot I'm all for it. I'm not crazy about who they cast.

"In 2002, I was so excited for Raimi's film. Then I saw it, accepted it, accepted the next one, and then was given Venom-lite, even more whiny Mary Jane, and Sandman did-it-all-along “Spider-Man 3.”

That snippet was awesome lol^^^^^^

@ messenger

yeah man, no biggie, differnce of opinions and all that. i feel that there are other ways to show that he's a genius though. his professor's in Spidey 2 showed that he's a very smart science geek. i don't feel he needs to create web shooters to prove that.

i would be happy either way, but like you said, i hate when he runs out of fluid in the comics. they only seem to have it run out when it fits the story or fight at the time. other times it seems like its limitless, lol.

@ Corndog: lol yes it's a plot device. Besides that he just shoot endlessly. I don't think he reloaded once during the secret war lol

the web shooters are the least of my concerns. The un-funny Spidey is my biggest gripe. If you have read Spider-man and even more recently with Bandis writing him, his wit is one of the best things about him. No one pisses off supervillains more than your friendly neighborhood Spidey! If anyone can throw you off your game, its him! Has anyone read Ultimate Spider-man where he just rips King Pin on being fat over and over again? That's what I want in the movie.

@ CDB - I hear you about the crying. I just think it was over explored in the movies. Superman has cried also, but it didn't happen in every movie. I mean once you have shown that humanity about the character, do you have to really remind us over and over again?

Yes the lack of his sense of humor yet everything around him being a joke was annoying. He always has a very dark and meek life. Even his villains are just criminals but he was always the light to it all. The humor, the color, and the Hero. That aspect was lost and never found in these movies.

I agree with alot of the comments, but the one thing that I look for is a more to the storyline movie. So much of the first three movies were out of sequence and Raimi did make Spidey fill lame at times. Why did Gwen not show up until the last movie? I agree about the crying over MJ. Parker/Spidey was more than just MJ. He had other girl interest as well. I am a big Eddie Brock/Venom fan and they made him out to be a wussy villian with Topher Grace. The one thing that I liked the most about Batman Begins is that the villians were made more scary and true to the Dark Knight comics. They were original and Nolan was not afraid to put not so well known villians in the picture and bring them more alive (Scarecrow). I want to see the Sinister Six. I want to see Scorpion. I want to see a MJ that is so attractive that all men would be interested in her. Bueatiful but interesting at the same time. Kirsten Dunst just didn't do that. I want to see Spidey's quick combacks and humor. I want to see a different Spidey. One that's not a geek in and out of the suit. I want to see better. I have been a long time Spiderman fan. And my 8 year old daughter is a fan too. And when she can notice the difference between comic and movie Spiderman, there seems to be an issue.

Couldnt agree with you more. Your completely right man
the interpretation of the movie in the past 3 films were pittiful.
they so needed a reboot!!!
and i have a feeling this one will be the best interpretation of the hero we grew to love.

Excellent Article ! Spot on all the way ! You brought up everything that was wrong with the Spiderman franchise, but you left two other things out : Macy Gray and those annoying New Yorkers throwing pipes, purses and soda cans in Spiderman 1.

Yur an idiot. I constantly have to fight other dorks about the fact that nearly EVERYTHING they change to make these comics movies makes them BETTER than they would be if they went right off the comic. examples: Organic web shooters are WAY cooler than gay ass web cartdiges, peter being in college is far more relatable to a mass audience than being a bitchy kid in high school, and sandman being a part of Uncle Ben's murder was a great plot point. The ONLY reason I dont like Spider-Man 3 is because of MJ. That twat deserved to get hit when Peter punched her, and I was glad she got knocked on her ass. She was a bitch that entire movie and I can't stand it

Jonnycakes13 - 7/14/2010, 3:45 PM
And let me stress again that web cartridges in a movie would be Effing STUPID. If this director makes that change from organic, I'm gonna hate it
Jonnycakes13
Jonnycakes13 - 7/14/2010, 3:47 PM
and with web cartridges, 50 bucks says that in the final battle with whatever villain they pick, spidey will run out of web fluid and get knocked around for a while before using his spidey agility to drop something very heavy on the villain to beat him. I gauruntee I just called the ending of the final battle if he doesnt use organic web shooters
