SPIDER-MAN Star Willem Dafoe On "Silly Looking" Original Green Goblin Costume Design

The Green Goblin costume Willem Dafoe donned in Sam Raimi's Spider-Man proved to be highly divisive, but the actor found the villain's original design to be even sillier-looking.

Though Willem Dafoe's turn as The Green Goblin in Sam Raimi's Spider-Man is often cited as one of the best villainous performances of all time, the costume he donned as Spidey's nemesis proved to be a lot more divisive.

Many have said they preferred the original animatronic mask design we saw in test-footage after the movie's release, but Dafoe was not a fan!

While speaking to Variety for their piece on how Raimi's film "Rescued the Superhero Genre and Changed Hollywood Forever," The Northman actor recalled how difficult it was to make the character look menacing while staying as true to his comic book roots as possible.

"The challenge was always to not make the Goblin ridiculous, make him a little scary. And I think, because technology was involved, they went with a very angular, very modern kind of look, more like an armor. Some of the early tests I saw, the Goblin looked more like a Halloween mask, this kind of puke green with bug eyes. It was kind of silly looking."

Some would argue that the final design didn't quite manage to avoid looking a little silly, anyway, but it was certainly more practical - not to mention easier to explain. After all, why would Norman Osborn wear a rubber mask into battle, and how the hell would it react to his facial movements?

There's probably a happy medium, but Dafoe ditched the mask completely for his recent return in Spider-Man: No Way Home, which allowed us to see more of his superb performance.

If we do see the Green Goblin again at some point, how would you like to see his costume depicted in live-action? Drop us a comment down below.

Shut up old man! Prosthetics trumps the stupid power ranger suit

Reminds me of Goosebumps the mask episode.

If that low budget could make it look real I think Sony could have gave us better than what I saw in S1.

That original design was definitely superior in every way. Raimi said it wasn’t used because the producers were worried it would be too scary for kids…. So they went with the dumb power rangers mask.

I know ppl like to shit on the original mask but for me, as a kid watching it, the stillfaced mask with the same weirdass expression stuck on it was legit scary as [frick].

Honestly glad they lost the mask for No Way Home so that they could get more of Defoe’s expressive performance. The part where Peter is punching Goblin in the face and he’s just cackling is great stuff.

There are 2 types of human beings on this planet.

- people who hate the Green Goblin test prosthetics and think it looks goofy and bad.

- people who love the test prosthetics and hurt inside their soul they didn't use it.

There is no in between.

Did Norman turn into the Goblin or did he wear a mask in the comics? I’m embarrassed that I don’t know this lol

At least he didn’t wear a paintball mask! The design in the video could have definitely worked, but I also see it scaring the crap out of kids…especially in the “Finish It” scene where Aunt May is praying.

@ProudPatriot76 - in the comics he wears a mask. In Ultimate Spider-Man universe he turned into a Hulk-like Goblin.

And the Harry version of Green Goblin DID wear a paintball mask in Spider-Man 3 lol

They made the right choice.

A rubber mask into battle could have been given a good story explanation though. It is possible.

@GirshwinDavies - I do too, but I would wager if there is an MCU version of Osbourne, they’ll likely go the Ultimate Marvel route.

Origame
Origame - 4/28/2022, 5:11 PM
@RolandD - I doubt it. They never do direct live action remakes of the comics like that. And we already basically got that story with the dark knight rises and batman v superman.
WeaponXCII

With how far filmmaking technologies have advanced just in the past twenty years, if there is ever another Green Goblin on the big screen, they absolutely could (and should, in my opinion) go for something more comic accurate.
GeneralZod
GeneralZod - 4/28/2022, 12:04 PM
@WeaponXCII - Totally agree. They have now had 3 chances to address it and they keep failing.
Origame
Origame - 4/28/2022, 12:53 PM
@WeaponXCII - they kinda shut that door with no way home. So outside of some more multiverse shenanigans bringing in a goblin from a separate universe not connected to the three we've seen before, we won't see a new attempt until either the mcu reboots or Sony pulls back on the deal again.
Fogs
Fogs - 4/28/2022, 11:44 AM
Not a fan of either. But I guess the mask would be harder to explain, perhaps.

To me NWH solution was almost perfect (dafoe's expression does almost all the work as some pointed out) - but to me the extra serum dose should have given him a greener and meaner complexion.
GhostSurfer
GhostSurfer - 4/28/2022, 12:53 PM
@Fogs - You could used the serum to explain it or even had his D.I.D. associate itself with green, and have him bomb a Halloween store and steal some Green Makeup face paint and apply it ahead of the final battle.

Easily explainable since the mask in that personality was Green.
Fares
Fares - 4/28/2022, 11:55 AM
If there ever was a goblin in the main MCU universe, we know the technology for a living mask is not too hard to believe.

Origame
Origame - 4/28/2022, 12:55 PM
@Fares - well no Norman or oscorp in the mcu so...

Maybe a cool opportunity for a hobgoblin since green goblin did appear randomly?
Fares
Fares - 4/28/2022, 1:05 PM
@Origame - ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ either that, or the MCU will continue long enough for some version of Norman to reappear. And if they reboot, well there's an opportunity there.
