Marvel's SPIDER-MAN: FRESHMAN YEAR Enlists Japanese 3DCG Anime Studio Polygon Pictures

The Disney+ Spider-Man: Freshman Year animated series will apparently be 3DCG as Japanese anime studio Polygon Pictures revealed they'll be handling animation for the series.

While Warner Bros. received a lot of attention for its cost-cutting moves, Disney also did something similar, removing dozens of shows from Disney+ and Hulu including Willow, Y: The Last Man, Runaways, and more.  This led to a bunch of rumors that several shows in development would also be canceled  including Spider-Man: Freshman Year.

However, Polygon Pictures has revealed that they will be the studio animating the series for Marvel.

An official press release on Polygon's website reads, "We hope you are looking forward to this return to the world of Spider-Man, utilizing the latest CG technology."

Polygon Pictures is primarily known for its use of 3DCG animation and the statement above is a clear indication that  Freshman Year will follow suit.

Founded in 1983, Polygon has switched from traditional 2D animation to 3DCG in recent years.  The studios works include Ghost in the Shell 2: InnocenceGodzilla: Planet of the Monsters for Netflix, and the Ajin film trilogy.

North American animation fans will be more familiar with their work on Tron: UprisingStar Wars Resistance, and Big Hero 6: The Series.

Spider-Man: Freshman Year was initially unveiled during Disney+ Day in November 2021, while concept art for the series (see below) was shown during SDCC 2022.

When first announced, Freshman Year was set to have a direct connection to the MCU, with Tom Holland also voicing Peter Parker in the series.  However, these plans have changed and the show will explore a "What If...." style concept which imagines the events of Spider-Man: Homecoming quite differently. Holland is also no longer attached to the project.

For instance, Freshman Year places Norman Osborn in the role that Robert Downey Jr.'s Tony Stark occupied. Norman takes Peter under his wing and even has Oscorp build his Spidey suits.

SPIDER-MAN: FRESHMAN YEAR Will Be Animated By Japanese Anime Studio Polygon Pictures

Other characters previously announced to appear in the show during SDCC 2022 include Harry Osborn and Amadeus Cho. Charlie Cox is also set to provide the voice of Matt Murdock aka Daredevil.

I'm confused. Was it not already animated?

With that art style you could have flash animated it and it would have still looked good. weird that they are now enlisting an animation company. so strange. so the question is, what are those stills from if not scenes from the actual show?

@micvalpro - Probably just key art/concept art. I think this show is still a ways away.

@GhostDog - They did Star Wars Resistance so I'll give them the benefit of the doubt.

sucks it's not 2D, but Polygon Pictures is a top tier 3D studio from which we've already seen plenty of work even witohut knowing it: Transformers Prime, Clone Wars, Tron Uprising, and in my opinion the highly underrated Knights of Sidonia

I thought they cancelled this show.

I'm glad to hear it's still coming of course.

@ObserverIO - I still find this show hilarious conceptually.

It's basically "what if mcu Spiderman were actually like the comics".

I'll be honest the animation in the Godzilla anime trilogy sucked so I'm not really sure about this.

I still don’t get how/why they decided to make this another variant/multiverse show… isn’t everyone tired of that by this point?

Would have been better as a prequel series.

@ImBatman4realz - I mean, there's like nothing they could've done for a prequel since nothing of note could've happened before civil war for spiderman.

3d animation so they can churn out seasons without all the great things that make 2d animation the superior product. It's amazing, the formers kings of 2d are so opposed to using it. WTF

AGAIN. Disney throwing money at things that DON'T NEED FIXING.

Balloon the budget on this show and predetermine it to fail and be cancelled.
WASTING MONEY everywhere. The show was already being created, AND BY PEOPLE who seemed to be pretty enthusiastic about it.

This kind of late stage swing is just more evidence of INDECISION and POOR VISION.
Feige is the one holding the bag, right?
Isn't he in charge of everything?

This is EMBARRASSING.

I must admit when I thought this was a direct prequel to Tom's Spider-Man immediately after the bite I was much more interested. A lot can happen in 6 months

Honestly, I wish they would have axed this. The concept art really bothered me. And instead of making new characters, they just change established characters. It's lazy, and I'm tired of it. Make new characters, and leave old ones alone... If Marvel is the "house of ideas", then it must be a retirement home, because there is not much new happening.
