SPIDER-MAN: FRESHMAN YEAR - New Details Revealed Amidst Rumors The Disney+ Series Could Be Canceled

New details have been revealed about Daredevil's role in Spider-Man: Freshman Year, while we also have an update on rumours the animated series has been cancelled amidst members of the crew being let go.

While Marvel Studios delivered another show-stealing Hall H panel at this year's San Diego Comic-Con, there was another, devoted to their upcoming animated projects, that also drew a lot of attention. First looks at everything from X-Men '97 to Marvel Zombies were revealed, while we also got a sneak peek at Spider-Man: Freshman Year.

The hope had been that the series would take place prior to the events of Captain America: Civil War. Instead, it's set in another world where Peter Parker finds a mentor in Norman Osborn. 

Recently, there have been some troubling rumours circulating on social media about both the future of Spider-Man: Freshman Year and all of these animated MCU projects. According to The Cosmic Circus, while the idea of the show being cancelled has been floated around, the current plan is for it to still premiere on Disney+ in 2024. 

However, Marvel Studios won't be moving forward with Spider-Man: Sophomore Year until they can gauge the interest in this first season, hence why most of the crew has indeed been let go. With the MCU rapidly expanding thanks to the streaming service, it appears budget cuts are taking place, with these animated projects at risk to at least some extent.

The site shares a few other interesting tidbits, including the fact Charlie Cox's Man Without Fear will get an alleyway fight scene on a par with the hallway-set battles we've seen in Daredevil and She-Hulk: Attorney at Law. 

It sounds like 'ol Hornhead will team up with Spider-Man to fight The Kingpin, with Vincent D'Onofrio returning to voice the villain. They add that, "Sources told us that the show and the movie were meant to parallel each other as these moments happened in alternate universes."

In other words, Spider-Man: Freshman Year could end up reflecting what we see in Spider-Man 4. Rumour has it that movie will see Spidey team up with Daredevil to take down The Kingpin once and for all, so seeing the same battle play out in a very different world through animation should be a lot of fun. 

As for the future of Marvel Studios Animation...that remains to be seen.

Streaming has finally become double edge sword good for those who live streaming bad for who are looking forward to shows get canceled people getting spread out on other projects

@dragon316 - I think it's a bit more than just people being alienated. Most of these companies are forcing people onto their platforms. Most people don't want to have multiple streaming services. But companies are pulling their catalogs away from other companies to force the consumer to now have to subscribe to Peacock or Paramount+ to watch their favorite franchise. So now these corporations have to think of ways to keep and convince fans of The Office to watch Chucky and Halloween Ends. While Disney+ needs to convince Netflix fans to stick around for the Marvel Studios Daredevil. And they bleed so much cash that they have to layoff innocent people so the shareholders can keep their bonuses.

This was a very odd project to begin with. Exciting, and the art is cool, but very odd project honestly.

@HWestRE420 - Yeah, I am confused by the whole "kinda MCU but not really" thing. I get that making it explicitly MCU Spidey makes it hard to do younger days that neatly fits before Homecoming, but by being MCU connected at all, it sort of hangs over the project like an albatross.

It probably will never happen but, hopefully when Disney isn't going through budget cuts, I wish they would just pay Sony X amount to have the rights to Spectacular and let Weisman and Cook pick up where they left off. Will never happen, though.

I think Marvel needs to slow down on their content a bit. Why was this scene special (besides the whole "Glock Cocking" shot)?



...because that was the first time they banded together, AFTER we got know them. Why was this scene so special?



...because they assembled after YEARS of character development...now? Everything just seems cluttered and rushed. That's why scene don't feel special anymore! They need to slow down and develop these characters, get us to love them, and take their time with them. If they do that, the future Assembly scenes will be impactful and loved. Just slow down with content output, and focus on these characters before bringing them together for a last hoorah against any big bad. Just my opinion.

@DCfan84 - Yeah but they used 21 movies to set up that last shot. Liking or not liking the direction of the story is one thing but they're doing the same thing they did the first time. The only difference is that there are way more characters now because of everything that happened in those 23 Infinity Saga movies.

@newhire13 - I understand what you're saying, and your right! They are doing the same thing again, but not! It takes time and individual movies with personal obstacles that need working through. In the end, it pays off. What I'm saying is to not put shit out (movies or D+), just to put shit out. There adding more characters, which is cool, but they're not developing them enough for us to care. In a huge collective universe, you need time, not more content for the hell of it. If that makes sense.

@DCfan84 - You say that but lots of people have been complaining all along about phase four not having any overarching story. No wonder it’s hard for entertainment execs to anticipate what people want.

Meanwhile though Marvel has used the third Spider-man movie and the second Doctor Strange movie and the upcoming third Ant-man movie to set up the overarching story while giving characters like Shang-Chi, the Eternals, and Moon Knight their own movies/shows to set up and explore their characters without too many connections to the greater MCU. Maybe Marvel has figured things out better than most.

@DCfan84 - Although I have liked most of the Disney+ shows to some extent, they all kinda suffer from the same problems and it's because they went full force on TV in a way they didn't with the films.

I know there was Covid, but Ms. Marvel was filming before WandaVision had come out. To put that into perspective, that's like filming up to Iron Man 3 before Iron Man 1 had come out. Most of them have very similar pacing issues, with leisurely paced earlier episodes, filler by Episode 4, good penultimate episodes, and rushed finales.

If they had more time to see what the audience reaction of WandaVision through Loki or so was before moving onto the next shows, I think the later shows would be stronger for it.

@DalekCraigWasson - I agree! So we both agree that the issue(s) here are both time and development?? The problem is, we went from The Avengers to a Multiverse! The more characters and things you add to the mix, the more problems you'll have with time, development,and pacing.

I hadn’t heard the rumor circulating about Spiderman 4. How does something reach rumor status? Can you just say it and it becomes rumor? Or is the a group think concensus process of sorts?

@ScaryTerry - somebody said/tweeted their on opinion and another person took it as truth and reissued it as “truth”. It usually starts out with this line,”This guy I know said…(insert rumor)”. And somebody with a blue check mark next to their name retweet’s it and then BOOM, another internet rumor with no base is born.

I would rather see a Spiderman animated series based more on the comics storylines instead of the MCU Spiderman's storyline. So if this is canceled I would not mind at all.

I really hope they keep this show afloat. The artstyle looks really good & I heard the creator is taking inspiration from The Spectacular Spider-Man.

By a show of hands, how many people actually care about this show now that it’s a “not really/kinda-sorta MCU” show? No hands? Well then they made a mistake when they decided to change it from an actual MCU origin story and decided on this bizarro world Spidey.

I think Disney and Marvel need to pump the breaks on all these meaningless projects.
