SPIDER-MAN: FRESHMAN YEAR Synopsis Appears To Confirm The Series Is Set In The MCU After All

Information released about Spider-Man: Freshman Year at Comic-Con led us to believe that there's no way the animated series can be set in the MCU, but an officially released synopsis suggest otherwise.

Marvel Studios brought Spider-Man: Freshman Year to Comic-Con yesterday, and while there were a lot of exciting reveals - like Charlie Cox's return as Daredevil - we were also left a tad confused. With Norman and Harry Osborn set to appear in the Disney+ series alongside villains like Doctor Octopus, there's surely no way it can be a prequel to Spider-Man: Homecoming.

However, the plot has now thickened thanks to some officially released details from Disney.

"Jeff Trammell teased the show with the cast of characters, and Ryan Meinerding showed off the new Spider-Man suit designed for the series," reads the press release. "A fun reveal was that moderator Paul F. Tompkins will be playing a character in the series. A second season was also announced, aptly titled 'Spider-Man: Sophomore Year.'"

That's obviously not overly revealing, but this official synopsis is: "'Spider-Man: Freshman Year' is an animated series that follows Peter Parker on his way to becoming Spider-Man in the MCU, with a journey unlike we've ever seen and a style that celebrates the character’s early comic book roots."

Wait, so it is in the MCU?

This still doesn't add up because so much of what we've seen from Spider-Man: Freshman Year contradicts the live-action movies. In Spider-Man: No Way Home, for example, it was confirmed that there is no Norman Osborn in the MCU. Peter Parker also doesn't recognise Doc Ock when he's attacked, but there could be a simple explanation here.

We're guessing the show isn't set on Earth-616, but like What If...? and Marvel Zombies, does take place in another reality in the wider MCU. That makes the synopsis a tad misleading, but we're still excited to see a series from Marvel Studios that explores Spider-Man's origin story (even if it isn't Tom Holland's web-slinger).

Spider-Man: Freshman Year premieres on Disney+ in 2024.

@Godzilla2000Zer -

Thank you! If Raimi's and Webb's previous are MCU canon, clearly so is this.

I'll wait for something like "Yeah, is MCU. In a corner of the MCU...A different earth with similarities"...

Didn't Norman in NWH just say that Oscorp doesn't exist? I don't think that'd necessarily mean Norman and Harry aren't out there somewhere in the MCU.

Although, it is unlikely. Either due to the deal with Sony, or simply a dumb creative decision when writing the script.

@Kurne - he said his building didn’t exist.

He says it doesn't exist, but I think that's vague enough to suggest he could've just went to where his building was and didn't find it.

This is taking place in some not-the-MCU-but-almost parallel universe. They're gonna try to make me buy that Tom Holland sounded like another dude a mere couple of months before Civil War ? GTFOH.

I mean, it's clearly set in the multiverse by Marvel studios but it's clearly not in the Main mcu

It could be Freshman year of college instead of highschool with flashbacks or a bottle episode covering his origin.

The creator can say this, but it pretty clearly is not set in the MCU as Peter clearly didn’t know Scorpion in Homecoming, Vulture was his first real villain, and screenshot showed the civil war scene with Tony recreated with Norman.

It may be set in the MCU in the same sense that What If… “is set” in the MCU.

@MrDandy - He may not have known Mac Gargan. That doesn't mean he didn't know of, at least, Scorpion. I don't know if it's said Peter's first villain was Vulture.

this is so confusing.

You're just choosing to confuse yourself. The MCU has already introduced a storytelling device called the Multiverse that allows stories that have different canon. It's done it multiple times already. Why is this an issue?
