MARVEL'S SPIDER-MAN PS4 Developer Insomniac Games Acquired By Sony; Essentially Guaranteeing A Sequel

A sequel to Insomniac Games' critically acclaimed PlayStation 4 title Marvel's Spider-Man has long been expected, but not yet announced. Now with confirmation that Sony has acquired the developer, a sequel to the best-selling superhero game in the United States is almost certainly on the way.

Earlier today, Sony announced that Insomniac Games is the newest addition to PlayStation's Worldwide Studios.

Insomniac has been a longtime collaborator with Sony, dating all the way back to the late 90s with the release of Disruptor and multiple Spyro games for the original PlayStation. The developer is also well-known for their PlayStation-exclusive franchises Ratchet & Clank and Resistance.

But what truly made Insomniac a must-have studio for Sony was their work on Marvel's Spider-Man, the critically acclaimed and commercially successful PlayStation 4-exclusive title. Marvel's Spider-Man sold 3.3 million units in its first three days available in the United States, making it the fastest-selling first-party game release in Sony's history. In July of this year, it swung past another milestone, topping Batman: Arkham City as the best-selling superhero game of all time in the United States.

Suffice to say, a sequel to the game was almost already guaranteed before today's announcement, but his acquisition pretty much seals the deal.

A message from Insomniac Games founder and CEO Ted Price regarding the acquisition can be found on the developer's website.

I’m surprised this hasn’t happened sooner given Insomniac’s history with Sony for decades lol, well I’m glad! Pretty sure we’ll see the sequel on the PS5

I hope they let them work their own ideas instead of force them to put the usual corporate BS in their games.

@Spidey91 - Just look at all of Sony's other exclusives. They are not known for forcing their studios to be anti-consumer.

That's EA and Activision...

@Spidey91 - Granted Death Stranding is looking like a very very weird game, Kojima specifically mentioned in his press tour for the game that Sony was the only company willing to let him have full free reign on Death Stranding and he was very grateful for their trust and respect.

The last 2 years for Spidey have been the best in a long time.

Besides Venom.
