SPIDER-MAN 2 Review Roundup: Spectacular Visuals And An Amazing Story Aren't Hampered By Familiar Gameplay

Reviews for Spider-Man 2 have swung online, but what are critics saying about the long-awaited sequel? Well, while the gameplay remains largely the same, it seems the story and visuals make up for it...

The reviews are in for Spider-Man 2 ahead of its release this Friday and, as excited as we've been to get our hands on 19 inches of Venom, all signs point to this PlayStation-exclusive living up to expectations.

The consensus seems to be that, in terms of gameplay, this follow-up is very much in line with Spider-Man and Spider-Man: Miles Morales. While that's disappointed some critics, the majority seem to agree the visuals and story more than make up for any shortfalls in that respect.

Below, you'll find a spoiler-free roundup of some early Spider-Man 2 reviews (via GameFragger.com).

We'll begin with IGN's review as the site scores the sequel an 8/10 and reveals, "Marvel's Spider-Man 2 delivers Insomniac's best tale yet, and despite its open world falling short, is a reliably fun superhero power trip." As for Kotaku, it's said that "[Spider-Man 2] is as good as it’s ever been, and in plenty of ways, even better. Being Spider-Man never gets old."

Eurogamer describes Spider-Man 2 as "simple, familiar, and occasionally cluttered" but "still brilliant fun." Game Informer's 9.5/10 review, meanwhile, states, "With Spider- Man 2, the developer has found what makes superhero stories worth telling (and retelling) and given its likable heroes the journey they deserve."

GamesRadar+ gives the game a 5/5 score and concludes by saying, "[It] improves on its predecessor across the board, while saluting the superhero genre over the last 30 years as a whole. With a captivating narrative and unrivaled spectacle, it's the quintessential superhero game, in story and mechanical terms."

io9 was similarly impressive and explains, "The game itself might not be as vastly changed mechanically as some people might hope from a fully-fledged sequel, but that matters far less in what Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 achieves by using that broadened scope to deliver a richer, interestingly messier, and more satisfyingly matured experience." Polygon shared a similar sentiment by noting, "Canons were made to be broken, and Spider-Man 2 swings in that direction. With a sequel teed up by the game’s final act, I’m eager to see where Insomniac goes with that momentum."

The prevailing opinion does appear to be that the game is very much in line with its predecessors but GameSpot was still left mightily impressed. "All in all, Marvel's Spider-Man 2 may largely give us more of what we've played in Insomniac's previous Spider-Man games, but that winning formula is still so damn fun that it really doesn't matter."

"The story's exploration of loneliness is fantastic," the site continues, "creating gripping new narratives for the two heroes, Peter and Miles, as well as the two main villains, Kraven and Venom."

It's not just video game websites chiming in as Variety scored it 9.5/10 and declared, "To put it simply, the final act of the game features some of the best storytelling and gameplay I’ve ever experienced. It’s pulse-pounding and truly epic, with some stunning surprises I wouldn’t dare spoil. Suffice to say: My jaw was on the floor."

Needless to say, it needs to be Friday already...

hopefully it comes to pc in the next year or so.

@Timelessicons - Pretty sure Sony said new releases for PS5 will be on PC 2 to 3 years after.

Mercwitham0uth - 10/17/2023, 11:55 AM
@dragon316 - I agree. But they gotta do that if they want to sell PS5's.

@Mercwitham0uth - That's still cool with me. At least they will make their way to PC now. That and God of War Ragnarock will be nice PC additions.

@Timelessicons - Yeah I suspect Ragnarok will be on PC late next year or mid 2025.

Only PS5 exclusive to coming to PC soon is Horizon: Forbidden West Complete Edition. It comes out early 2024.

@Mercwitham0uth - Oh nice! The first one was great on Pc. I was going to get the PSVR 2 Horizon but they turned it into a climbing game for some stupid reason.

@Timelessicons - Yeah I'm not sold on VR. It just looks too much like a cheap overly expensive gimmick with mostly half-assed looking games.

I think the only game with VR that impressed me was Half-Life: Alyx.

Oh and Nixxes os porting Horizon: FW. The same team who ported Spider-Man and Spider-Man Mile Morales to PC.

pretty sure that due to the release of the kraven trailer for sony's Kraven earilier this year will play a major role and boost the sells for this game's marketing and will help the game's box office performance. https://i.ibb.co/nw009p0/tumblr-3703c20ab29ed7755acef75a0255ace2-b25cb1ed-540.webp

I'm interested. I hope this lives up to expectation. I also hope to see some crazy dlc's from Madame Webb, Morbius, Vermin, and Puma...

why would anyone even bring up familiar gampeplay? Like you found out what worked on the first one, just like Gow and others what do you expect them to fully change it up? lets completely change how the game is played for no reason at all even though it worked fine on the first one.

@Chris827 - exactly! I agree 💯

VictorAlonzo - 10/16/2023, 11:20 PM
@Chris827 - new animations would help replay value. Not saying anything is broken, but a fresh set of car stops, gang takedowns, web movements, etc would likely be a welcome addition.

I've had this one pre-ordered for months now. Can't wait until Friday!

Spidey91 - 10/16/2023, 11:05 PM
I'm still bummed it's not coming to PS4 also. But I get it, making it a PS5 exclusive is gonna drive console sales. And maybe the good ol' 4 can't handle some of the stuff the game does.
FireandBlood
FireandBlood - 10/17/2023, 2:30 AM
@Spidey91 - If you look at even the PS5 remaster and then this new one side by side, you’ll see how the PS4 couldn’t even run this game with its decade old hardware
Spidey91
Spidey91 - 10/17/2023, 9:44 AM
@FireandBlood - I know. I saw that fast travel feature and its near non-existent load times and I was like "no wonder it's only PS5".
MyCoolYoung
MyCoolYoung - 10/16/2023, 11:44 PM
I'm sure we'll get a few new moves but if it ain't broke don't fix it. I'm really excited for this one. I really don't want to beat it to fast
AvalonX
AvalonX - 10/17/2023, 12:15 AM
I don't know why I cant get excited for this. It looks identical to the first one (at least on PS5). I was hoping for a graphics upgrade and a better open world experience. It looks like an outdated open world model but Im sure the story is good. I also dont like character swaps. Might wait to see what they do with the DLC although I would expect Miles specific DLC like before.
FireandBlood
FireandBlood - 10/17/2023, 2:28 AM
@AvalonX - We know why and so do you

dragon316
dragon316 - 10/17/2023, 8:03 AM
@AvalonX - graphics don’t make game good depends on people as many crappy costumes we saw expecting maybe down load content will be alternate costumes for some parts of it that be disappointing
Origame
Origame - 10/17/2023, 9:15 AM
@AvalonX - I really can't agree. It's definitely an improvement graphically and based on performance. And how's the open world model outdated? If anything it's timeless in comparison to the current wave of "open world with nothing to do because of the faux rpg mechanics that restrict where you can go" bs that we've been getting.
AvalonX
AvalonX - 10/17/2023, 8:08 PM
@Origame - Anything aside from the main story are the same dull mission we've seen for years. I dont know, its just not grabbing me. I know I'm in the minority on this one. I guess I expected more.
AvalonX
AvalonX - 10/17/2023, 8:12 PM
@dragon316 - I would expect at least the DLC support the first game got. I mean, whatever my opionion is, I can't deny that this series is probably the defining series on PS5. Ragnorok or Horizon didnt get this kind of coverage.
Origame
Origame - 10/17/2023, 8:36 PM
@AvalonX - ...so you've played missions where you have to investigate and help a copycat of your character before?

Honestly I'm not sure how extensive you've played the side content of Spiderman ps4. These games are famous for having the side missions be effectively like individual issues of the comics.

Hell, the tombstone boss fight is a side mission. And it's considered a highlight of the whole game.

Looks really fun. Wish I had a PS5, would add something else new to keep myself distracted and having fun.
Origame
Origame - 10/17/2023, 9:19 AM
@NinnesMBC - I just wish Sony would get off their a$$es and do simultaneous PC releases for their games.

We got xbox offering all their exclusives day and date on PC while including PC in their gamepass subscription free.

All playstation did this generation is charge more. Even their ps5 slim is more expensive, even though the whole point of the slim model is to give a discounted version of the console.

I swear, if it wasn't for insomniac, Sony would have nothing going this generation.
Mercwitham0uth
Mercwitham0uth - 10/17/2023, 12:03 PM
@Origame - People wanting to purchase a PS5 in Canada got screwed.

Prices of PS5's were reduced in the US and other territories. Canada? Nope. No price reduction.

Then in August of this year PS5's in Canada had a price increase.

PS5 slim is more expensive cause it has a 1TB SSD card in it. I think the regular PS5 has 550-650 GB I think.
Origame
Origame - 10/17/2023, 1:05 PM
@Mercwitham0uth - it wasn't even reduced. We just didn't get the price hike everyone else did.

As for the slim, it may have more storage, but it also weighs less. So really it should be cheaper from that point alone. As all slim models have been as part of tradition.
Mercwitham0uth
Mercwitham0uth - 10/17/2023, 2:55 PM
@Origame - ah thought I saw it was reduced by like $30 USD.
Origame
Origame - 10/17/2023, 3:01 PM
@Mercwitham0uth - technically. But that's removing the stand that came standard with every ps5 before that. Meaning you can't stand it up.

And they even are selling a stand for the ps5 slim that's lower quality and costing $30. So it's really not any cheaper.
Mercwitham0uth
Mercwitham0uth - 10/17/2023, 4:20 PM
@Origame - Ah ok didn't know it was the removal of the stand.
Origame
Origame - 10/17/2023, 4:28 PM
@Mercwitham0uth - yeah. Sony be penny pinching.
Mercwitham0uth
Mercwitham0uth - 10/17/2023, 6:58 PM
@Origame - Clearly. This inflation sucks and corporate greed is trash.
Origame
Origame - 10/17/2023, 7:57 PM
@Mercwitham0uth - it's really not even inflation. All other electronic devices are going down in price. Including the places Sony and Microsoft are getting the parts for consoles. There's no reason the price of the consoles should've gone up in price after 3 years.
FireandBlood
FireandBlood - 10/17/2023, 2:27 AM
Love how they give GoW a pass for the same gameplay but it’s a notch down for Spider-Man.

Anyway, pre-ordered and ready to pre-load. This weekend belongs to Peter and Miles. It’s been a [frick]ing good 7 run of being a Spidey fan, I’ll tell ya that
DrReedRichards
DrReedRichards - 10/17/2023, 4:17 AM
@FireandBlood -

GoW 4 > Ragnarok

Both are amazing, though.
VictorAlonzo
VictorAlonzo - 10/17/2023, 11:54 PM
@FireandBlood - I'm guessing the notch down for Spider-Man is due to having re-locks on unlocked moves in prior games. Sounds redundant.
