SPIDER-MAN: MILES MORALES Will Give The Wall-Crawler An Unexpected Sidekick: Spider-Cat

Spider-Man: Miles Morales already looks like 2020's most spectacular video game, but the addition of Spider-Cat - no, we're not kidding - looks set to make this an even bigger must-buy than expected...

Spider-Man: Miles Morales is less than a month from swinging into stores alongside the PlayStation 5, but we're going to need to stop the presses and talk about Spider-Cat for a second!

Revealed as part of Game Informer's cover story, the video below shows a side mission in the game which follows Miles Morales as he vows to retrieve a store owner's cat which, believe it or not, is called Spider-Man. As you might expect, the web-slinger succeeds in his mission, and gains an unexpected new ally in the process.

It appears that after completing this rescue, a new "Cat Suit" is unlocked which will see "Spider-Cat" join Miles on his adventures, even leaping out of the hero's backpack to claw enemies! This is a fun addition to Spider-Man: Miles Morales, and one fans are already raving about online.

In the latest adventure in the Marvel’s Spider-Man universe, teenager Miles Morales is adjusting to his new home while following in the footsteps of his mentor, Peter Parker, as a new Spider-Man. But when a fierce power struggle threatens to destroy his new home, the aspiring hero realizes that with great power, there must also come great responsibility. To save all of Marvel’s New York, Miles must take up the mantle of Spider-Man and own it.

Still feels weird that my boy Miles got such mainstream appeal nowadays. The guy headlines the PS5 and got an Oscar.

@Kingdork - well he had his own personality and hiss existance still respected Peter Parker, unlike failed attemps at gender/race beinding of popular characters, its a matter of time before we get him in live action.

@heyy1 - still didn't stop some people from losing their shit when he was first created though haha

But yeah, Miles is a great character, would be awesome to see him in the MCU proper, would be good to see Peter go from a mentee to a mentor for Miles.

@Kingdork - He was created not as a cash in or forced PC, but from the heart and it shows. Miles is one of Marvel’s finest recent additions and a true credit to the name Spider-Man. I can’t wait to see more, not just from the game but his story in general.

@Kingdork - If he was introduced today, the comicsgate crowd wouldn't let it happen. It's amazing how times change so fast.

They tried to diversify at DC recently with a Marvel Now!-esque initiative complete with a black Batman, but there was an actual coup de tat and now black Batman is being released as a mini-series instead (and only then because there were already a handful of issues completed).

I'm just glad they established Miles beforehand, so now he's so much a part of the woodwork that nobody opposes the videogame or movie appearances and we get to have all this awesome stuff.

@GwenLantern - "If he was introduced today, the comicsgate crowd wouldn't let it happen. It's amazing how times change so fast."

Eh, I dunno if I agree. It wouldn't have happened back then either, by that reasoning. Remember, there was a bit of an outrage against him back when he was first announced, and some of those may've been the same comicsgate crowd only under a different name, for the most part. So, if they have that much power, it wouldn't have happened then, either. Marvel got away with Miles cause it was in the Ultimate universe (which had been deformed beyond recognition by that point), and fans could otherwise still have 616 Spidey.

The supposed "coup d'etat" at DC wasn't so much because there was a proposal of a black Batman but, indeed, because it was a Marvel NOW! kinda initiative -- I'm guessing you're speaking about the All New All Different thing, which was concurrent with both MARVEL NOWs and of which Marvel backtracked relatively soon bringing the beloved classic characters back. I mean, it was a mess, there were like a zillion #1's in just a few years for the same titles, and later they returned to their classic numbering... very 90's and gimmicky of them, and not very succesful sales-wise.
So DC execs, based on Marvel's experience, assumed (correctly IMO) that it was VERY risky for the sales of their main properties to g ahead with 5G -- yet another Crisis waiting to happen. I mean, dating Superman and Batman in the forties, others in the 50's and so on? The gimmick was definitely going to run old fairly soon. Add to that that this was after some MAJOR missteps from DiDio and co. by that point, which had already negatively affected sales and it was obvious heads were going to roll and the whole thing was going to be nixed.
So... Now they get to make a light version of it and see what's the reception with FUTURE STATE. Then, whichever characters are appreciated by fans, they can build on afterwards. Much like with Miles in the Ultimate universe.

Bottom line, replacing characters with about 90 years of publishing on their backs, I think it's obvious by now that it's not only risky but most surely to end up being a failure. It's not even a "it's cause Comicsgate people are powerful conservatives" thing. It's just that it may work for a little, as a gimmick, but quickly readers want the classics back -- and maybe they want t keep the new characters or some of them, but they don't want them to replace the classics. Those characters have been beloved for very long, too much so to be swiftly replaced by newcomers. I mean, it didn't work in the 90s either, even though the replacements were all white (Knightfall, Clone Saga, that weird time between the death and return of Superman, etc) so it's hardly an anti-inclusivity sentiment.

@fanboy03191 -

Mind you, Miles started out pretty flat and very much a Peter Parker-lite, but he did get fleshed out properly as Bendis got a better grip of the character. And he was also in the Ultimate Universe so there was a relatively greater freedom of action to do stuff with the character that couldn't have been done in the main 616.

Not gonna lie Spider-Cat is super cheesy, I hope it's just the suit you can use more so something that is apart of the story in any significant way.

Not that I hate cats... but it's literally cheering and makes no sense why you would endanger it to begin with That being said if it is just for a fun costume to equip for laughs I'm cool with it.

You can't introduce Spider-Cat without his arch nemesis, Venom Pigeon.
