Until Red Dead Redemption 2 came along, Spider-Man was being hailed as the best video game of 2018 and Insomniac has kept us all on the hook with the three-part "The City That Never Sleeps" DLC.

First up was the Black Cat-centric "The Heist" and yesterday saw the release of "Turf Wars," a chapter which puts the spotlight firmly on Hammerhead. While it's much shorter than the first batch of DLC, there are still plenty of big reveals and it sets the stage for the third and final instalment which goes on sale next month (and is still shrouded in secrecy).

Now, we're taking an in-depth look at "Turf Wars" to break down all the biggest moments and spoilers in the game. If you've played it, this is a handy recap, and if you haven't, it will bring you right up to speed with what's happened. So, to take a look, all you guys have to do is hit the "View List" button.

New York Under Siege

The DLC kicks off with a recap of the events which unfolded in the previous chapter and we quickly learn that New York City is caught in the midst of a gang war between the Maggia and Hammerhead's gang of criminals. The sunny skies have been replaced with rain and clouds, while it takes no time at all for a number of cops to be brutally killed by the villain.

As a result, it's clear from the start that "Turf Wars" is much darker than what we saw in "The Heist" as the lighter tone Black Cat brought to the table is now nowhere to be seen in Spider-Man.

Miles Morales Wants To Be Trained

Miles continues badgering Peter throughout the DLC in a series of phone calls which see him ask Spider-Man to train him to use his newfound powers. Busy trying to stop Hammerhead, the wall-crawler doesn't seem overly interested in helping Miles right now but changes his mind when he learns that the youngster jumped off a bridge and broke a toe in the process!

This explains why in Spider-Geddon, Spidey was happy to leave his Earth in the hands of Miles: he must have trained him up to watch over the city
as a superhero by that point in time.

There's No Sign Of Mary Jane Watson

The levels revolving around Mary Jane Watson have been met with something of a mixed response; a lot of gamers loved them, while others were frustrated having to give up playing Spidey to sneak around as the intrepid journalist.

Well, at least some of you will be glad to learn that MJ doesn't factor into this DLC at all beyond a couple of phone calls between her and Peter which only do a very small amount to advance the story. She'll presumably return in part three!

Spider-Man Isn't Mourning Black Cat

Despite witnessing her death in the closing moments of "The Heist," Peter doesn't seem at all torn up about Black Cat's demise in the last batch of DLC. In fact, he doesn't even mention his former flame, a baffling move considering the fact that he knows Hammerhead was responsible.

There's not even a mention of Black Cat's murder during the final battle between the two and it gives this second lot of DLC a somewhat disjointed feel which doesn't really tie into the first.

Yuri Watanabe Takes A Villainous (?) Turn

Comic book fans will be well aware that Yuri Watanabe ultimately becomes the villainous Wraith and it appears as if this game is setting the stage for that in a big way. Torn up by the many deaths of the police officers who serve under her, she ultimately does something she's unable to come back from when the police captain shoots the defeated Hammerhead in the, well, head.

This is presumably leading to her being kicked off the force and becoming a vigilante, something Insomniac is more than likely saving for the sequel as it's a plot thread which will need some time to play out (and with just one lot of DLC left, it probably won't happen during that).

The "Death" Of Hammerhead

Hammerhead powers himself up with some pretty formidable looking tech during the course of this adventure but that's not enough to stop Spider-Man from ultimately defeating him.

It's then that Yuri guns the villain down but during an after-credits scene, a henchman (disguised as a cop) electrocutes his boss back to life and his eyes open as the screen goes black.

This presumably means that he will continue playing a large role in the third and final batch of DLC.

Screwball Returns

Screwball's missions in "The Heist" were particularly good fun and while they're a little more infuriating in this chapter (to say the least), the villain once again makes her presence felt here. This time, Spider-Man is trying to triangulate her location so he can put her behind bars for good.

The New Suits

There are three new suits in this batch of DLC and they're all very cool. We get the classic Iron Spider suit from The Amazing Spider-Man comic books; Peter Parker’s bulletproof Spider-Armor MK I; and the Spider-Clan suit, from the pages of Marvel’s Mangaverse comic books.

You get the MK I suit almost immediately, while the Iron Spider is unlocked once you finish the story chapters. You'll need to complete all the crimes and tasks to get Spider-Clan, though!

It's Short But Sweet

This batch of DLC is considerably shorter than the last lot but it's still pretty good fun and worth checking out. An argument could be made that it doesn't really justify the price tag but the side missions are somewhat time consuming, especially as they'll often take you multiple attempts to complete.

By the time all is said and done, you may end up getting a good six hours gameplay out of this and that's not bad even if the missions are quite short and the story can be a tad underwhelming.

What Comes Next?

That remains to be seen, but we know that chapter three is titled "Silver Lining" which presumably means that Silver Sable will make her return to help bring this gang war to an end once and for all.

A sequel to the main game is also inevitable, so don't be surprised if there are at least some big hints about what that will feature, particularly in regards to Miles Morales suiting up as Spider-Man!

Yuri Watanabe Takes A Villainous (?) Turn

Yea the adjective to describe a police captain shooting a mob boss in the end for killing police officers who served under her would be villainous....

I wonder how you’d describe Frank Castle

As much as I love this game, is it just me or does it feel empty in terms of how NYC is referred to as Marvel’s New York?

Sure you have Nelson/Murdock, Avengers tower, Strange’s home, a Wakanda embassy; but I just feel the world is empty

Remember in Ultimate when you can race against the Human Torch or how Hulk was referenced or how you fought Wolverine as Venom & many more?

I get the game wants to be more Spider-Man but I’m just saying how it’s confirmed Matt lives in NYC & how it’s confirmed he’s blind & has his superpowers as knowing who Spider-Man was despite being blind; it’s odd to see him nowhere to be found when there’s an all out mob war in NYC that happens because the Kingpin is finally behind bars

I mean having Taskmaster is cool & I’m not asking for the entire Marvel universe to exist but it’s just odd how someone like Daredevil exists & is abset from the game

@LEVITIKUZ - Agreed. DAREDEVIL, JJ and the F4 should've had a few cameos; Matt without question though. He is the quintessential NYC hero after Spidey imo. Especially, considering that Insomniac has said they are flirting with the idea of making pother Marvel games that will be in this world. A cut scene with Matt at Fisk's arrest and/or trial would have been nice. We see a white cane tapping away down the block, coming towards the ruckus as Fisk is hauled away. A smirk comes across the face of Matt Murdock, then he hears Spidey on a rooftop above and meet shim up there. They have a quick chat. Something that like would have been cool.

Spider Man 2 should have more cameos from other NYC heroes.

@LEVITIKUZ - Yeah. It's weird that they felt that any cameos would take attention away from Spidey.

It would have made sense Storywise for a DD, Luke Cage, or Iron Fist appearance

@LEVITIKUZ - Totally - I agree. Every time I swing by Strange's place, I look for some sort of notification that there's something more to do here, but no... just an empty house. New York in Marvel is very much a character. And it's a magnet for characters to conglomorate. It's weird that yeah, there's no DD or Cage or Strange - but there's Silver Sable from half the world away! haha

Not gotten the DLC yet, nor completed the game yet (don't have PS4 =[) but I will say...this is possibly the best Spider-Man game...ever. Hand's down with the blockbuster quality writing & story, to the graphics, to the gameplay being fluid, fast & easy, to the enormous amount of costumes one can change out and have perks/power-ups to each costume...this is the best there ever has with this game.

ONNNNNEEEEEE thing that irks the hell out of me...I still don't get why this can't be played on Xbox One. Sure. I get the politics/business side of things when it comes to Sony & Spider-Man but, where was that fuss in the older generation consoles like 360 & PS3? Maybe I'm just complaining cause I don't own one which is the obvious, but did anyone who owns an Xbox One feel that way? That the game is fantastic but see no reason as to why it couldn't be played on Xbox One as well? This is why I will forever hate console exclusivity because it presents the idea that Playstation was THE ONLY choice. I don't know. Console exclusives meant so much back then but now...with multiplayer games deciding to cross-play and more games following in the future...why bother with console exclusives? Small rant lol. Sorry lol.

BTW! HAPPY THANKSGIVING EVERYBODY!

@AyMan - happy Thanksgiving, Bro. During the reign of the xbox 360 Microsoft was on top of the world but for some reason on the one they decided to focus on everything but the games and gameplay and I believe they pissed a lot of developers off by not letting them see their hardware to make games for the one.

It came back and bit them in the ass now they're playing catch up.
AyMan
AyMan - 11/21/2018, 10:33 AM
@MyCoolYoung - Thanks!

Well, it all depends on the consumer actually. When 360 came out, that was the only Next-Gen console available, despite the set backs regarding hardware issues, it reigned supreme the entire run till Xbox One & PS4 came out. When the next-gen consoles were announced, I don't think it has to do with developers being kept in the dark about the hardware, cause it is quite similar to PS4 in some places.

What I see, and I could be wrong or right, but is PRICE POINT & CONSUMER CONFIDENCE. When Xbox One was unveiled, it rocked the gaming market and deemed a failure because of the strict DRM rules, lack of exclusive games and the price point. When they abolished DRM, it was a remedy to 1/3 of the problems presented. $500 was steep! Playstation 4, later came with their own announcement in NYC, and stated how it was going to change it all, showed some exclusives, pointed the middle finger at DRM and then went as far as to unveil the price, $400 dollars.

Instant winner! The consumer is now seen as top priority in what they want. It wasn't because it was a better console because both did the exact same shit. Blu Ray player, online gaming, online gaming store, and my favorite...DRM which is now an every day use but was frowned upon when launched happen.

Now? Who is on top? Surely not PS4 and Spider-Man proved it isn't really enough. Meanwhile Nintendo Switch is proving how to present hardware to consumers in a flexible way with mobile gaming and console gaming all in the same. Xbox is also presenting this idea in the future at E3 with it's constant hints from Ubisoft and other developers about being able to play games wherever, whenever. PS4...well, they got VR...Spider-Man...exclusives...I guess? Let's not even mention the PS4 Pro, that was a step down to it's competitor Xbox One X, that truly had 4K games as opposed to PRO which upscaled to 4K rather than show it in true 4K native, not to mention abolishing the Blu Ray 4K drive or lack ob Blu Ray player. Truly a step down.

I honestly feel that is why Playstation was so much on top that...people just didn't care what it was that made it incredibly special. It was almost the exact same shit, except for the "exclusivity" to the gamers as far as pricing, consumer trust after the big PSN hack, and exclusive games.

I can go on forever about this lol, but that's how I have seen it since 360 days. Xbox One, is following a similar run to the PS3. Price-point was ridiculous, lack of exclusive games, and lack of consumer trust. It's like a sense of "deja vu"
MyCoolYoung
MyCoolYoung - 11/21/2018, 10:45 AM
@AyMan - lol I see that's a great breakdown. The fact that xbox didn't talk much about games was a letdown for me. I thought the 360 was the best game system gen and still has the best controller I've played with.

The one is, objectively, better than the ps4 but I tell people what's a game if you don't want to play any of the games. Plus I love the controller.

The mobile gaming, playing wherever doesn't really excite me I don't do either I just want to know which games I can play. That's why I'm (Im) patiently waiting on the last of us 2. I still play the first one online mode.

The switch is making crazy noise but I've never been excited for Mario or Zelda games. Smash bros still a goat though
AyMan
AyMan - 11/21/2018, 11:23 AM
@MyCoolYoung - Ohhhh I hear ya! When Microsoft announced Xbox One, it was a huge blow to gamers because there was no talk of games, just what the future of next-gen looked like. While an impressive idea, DRM I felt was the huge killer. But PS4, with KNACK as a highlight at the conference in 2014...how?!? Compared to like Forza or Halo, like how the hell did Knack & Killzone become acceptable over those launch titles? Both were mediocre games compared to Forza & Halo 5...well...Halo 5 had a bad story but GAMEPLAY/GRAPHICS, obviously shadows and shadows over Killzone. As you can see though, their exclusive games for PS4...weren't shit! The controller, was NOTHING new except for a touchbar that was pretty pointless, so to me, it just leads back to "pricing" being the huge foot in the door for Sony's much needed boost after PS3's failure and rise.

You see I agree, Xbox One really makes it the idea of a "home-entertainment system" purposeful and natural where as PS4, I was excited, but what they were giving us was exactly what Xbox One was giving us...NOTHING. Just how much were you willing to fork over for nothing, became the big obstacle. I love the Xbox One controller, it fits in my hand perfectly, where as I like the PS4 controller but all in all, it presents features that seem kind of pointless. Like the SIX-AXIS, it had some point for some gameplay features, but other than that...THAT'S IT. Nothing spectacular.

I'm not saying it is for everyone, there is still a lot of leaps and bounds it must make before it truly really does take off. Mobile gaming is the future, but the true future is "streaming", now THAT is going to be either a big hit, or a big colossal failure. I am also eagerly anticipating Last of Us 2. That will make me officially own a PS4, but like the first game, this wait makes me wait till the end of the PS4 cycle presumably rather than launch. What's exciting, PS4 BUNDLED WITH KNACK, or PS4 BUNDLED WITH LAST OF US 2?

Oh man the Switch is fantastic, it has so much nostalgia that harkens back to Nintendo kept saying that "The Power Is In Your Hands" when it came to Gameboy, now the power is literally all in your hands again. Playing Skyrim is great...but have you played Skyrim on THE GO?! Crazy. While it's just a niche, it's a niche that...works in favor of adding a fresh perspective on gaming. Smash Bros included. Smash Bros however...I mean that game is just golden to me.

Pantherpool

@Vigor - Because it's noteworthy, since it's rare for an animated film.
Vigor
Vigor - 11/21/2018, 9:05 AM
@AyMan - eh idk, I don't really care for the distinction between those two ratings. PG-13 to R has a bigger and more noticeable change in what they allow in the film

But since you ask, I'd say PG-13. Just because of simple animated violence.
AyMan
AyMan - 11/21/2018, 9:09 AM
@Vigor - I ask because, like Pantherpool stated, it is rare to see a PG-13 animated movie. Last PG-13 animated film I remember was Eight Crazy Nights, and the last R rated animated film was Sausage Party, however those types of films needless to say deserve that rating.

However, if they are rating it PG-13, and yet it is animated and intended for all ages to go watch, it kind of does matter and very unexpected. Given animated films with the PG rating, violence/action have tended to be very "broad" on how much is put. Incredibles 1 & 2 are action packed heavy animated films centered on a superhero family. Could they pass for PG-13? Absolutely, but they passed with PG in mind.

So, sure, you may not care cause you still are going to watch it. That's acceptable and totally understandable, just want you to see why it kind of IS a big deal. MPAA has always been a cluster for directors and studios.

Hammerhead and the Black Cat are pretty cool here, but I can not stand that stupid "Screwball" character. She is very much a Jar Jar Binks or a Hayden Christianson in that she's ruined the game for me. She's come back like three times in the game and every time, I want to skip her little parts of the game, but you need to play them to get stuff. She seems to be made for the 12 and under audience. It's like having my fingernails pulled out while watching a Disney princess marathon - pretty excruciating. Maybe its just me - Does anyone actually enjoy this character??
