SPIDER-MAN Video Game Franchise Was Very Nearly An Xbox Exclusive - But They Turned Marvel Down!

The Spider-Man and Spider-Man: Miles Morales games have been major hits for Sony's PlayStation consoles, but the franchise could have been an Xbox exclusive...had they not turned Marvel Games down!

Spider-Man was a huge critical and commercial hit for Sony, and the spinoff, Spider-Man: Miles Morales, was a key part of the company's PlayStation 5 launch. However, little did we know that there was a time when the franchise could have been made available exclusively on Xbox consoles instead.

In an excerpt from Steven L. Kent's book The Ultimate History of Video Games, Vol. 2 (via GameFragger.com), Marvel Games boss Jay Ong reflected on cutting ties with Activision in order to regain Spider-Man. Marvel wasn't happy with the quality of games they had delivered, and when he was asked what Marvel Games had planned for the web-slinger, Ong replied, "I'm going to find a better home for it."

Activision's response was "Good luck finding your unicorn," and it was then that Ong approached Sony and Xbox execs. He asked both if they would be interested in an exclusive console deal, but Xbox quickly turned him down due to having their own exclusive IPs to focus on.

"I sat down with these two execs from PlayStation third-party, Adam Boyes and John Drake, in August 2014, in a conference room in Burbank," he recalls. "I said, 'We have a dream that this is possible, that we could beat Arkham and have one game at least and maybe multiple games that could drive adoption of your platform.'" With that, Sony offered to make a Triple-A Spider-Man game and enlisted Insomniac to make it as amazing as it could and should be.

As we now know, Spider-Man became one of Sony's most popular titles, so you have to believe that Xbox team is majorly regretting its decision these days. Of course, they didn't have access to Insomniac and it's impossible to imagine any other developer delivering such a spectacular spin on the hero.

A Spider-Man sequel, starring Tony Todd as Venom, is expected to be released next year. For all the latest on that, make sure you keep a close eye on GameFragger.com for updates!

“Of course, they didn't have access to Insomniac”
Oh…journalism strikes again. This is simply not true.

Hypothetically, if Xbox did take the deal, they could have still enlisted Insomniac if they wanted. Insomniac always had a closer relationship with Sony, but at this point in time they were still an independent AAA developer. They made Sunset Overdrive for Xbox just a few years prior to the Spider-Man announcement, and they tend to make games exclusive to whatever console they decided to work on. Hence why Sunset has remained an Xbox exclusive (though their deal allowed Insomniac to retain rights to the IP. Guarantee it will be ported eventually). Chances are, if Xbox took the deal, they wouldn’t have gone to Insomniac to develop anyway. But that’s not something that would have been off the table at this time.

Sony only JUST acquired Insomniac in 2019. So now, any game Insomniac does will be absolutely be Sony-exclusive. But that wasn’t the case, and was not true, at the time when this was being shopped around.

@DTor91 - I always confuse Insomniac with Sucker Punch with what game they previously made. For Insomniac I keep thinking of them as the Infamous developer and Sucker Punch as the Sunset Overdrive developer.

But yeah, Sunset Overdrive being an Insomniac game and an Xbox-exclusive easily could have laid the groundwork for another Insomniac-Xbox partnership.

@bkmeijer1 - Ha, I used to confuse the Infamous series for being developed by Insomniac instead of Sucker Punch. Always just associated Sucker Punch with only making Sly Cooper for some reason.

And then Sucker Punch pretty much ended the PS4 tenure with the fantastic Ghost Of Tsushima. Can’t wait for all that comes next from both developers.

@DTor91 - I always associated Sucker Punch with Sly Cooper, just like how I just associate Insomniac with Ratchet & Clank and Spyro. Atleast I get it right when I associate Naughty Dog with Jak & Daxter and Crash Bandicoot.

Now that I think about it, I kinda miss those old franchises. Although the new ones like Ghost of Tsushima, The Last of Us and all those other singleplayer narritive-driven Playstation games are great too

Insomniac is a top-tier studio and as long as they hold the reigns the output will be good or great.

Having said that i don't think the Activision games were bad at all. I played a lot of them and enjoyed them for the most part. Spider-Man Ps4 borrows a lot from the Activision gameplay mechanics.

Also i like to mention on any video game article that i am patiently awaiting Amy Hennig's announced Marvel title. Amy is an icon to me.

@TheManWithoutFear - same. I really look forward to Forspoken, since it looks different from the previous game she wrote (especially character-wise).

Didn't even know she was working on a Marvel title, but that is something I can get excited for as well. Wonder what IP it's gonna be

@bkmeijer1 - Yeah i haven't even decided what IP i would like it to be. A Thor game spanning the realms could be cool.

I think i'm leaning towards a WW2 Howling Commandos game inspired by Stan's 60s comics. Probably the closest analogue to Uncharted in a lot ways. Plenty of different map locations to choose from, third person combat gameplay, vehicle missions. Plus the kind of sarcastic, heroic main characs that blend well with comedy. Family vibe like with Sully-Nate-Elena. Play as Fury with the other Howlers are side-characters. Damn i would kill for that game haha. Probably will not be that though.

@TheManWithoutFear - that would be cool to see. I wouldn't mind it either if it's the Invaders instead, but that setting could definitely work.

Aside from the setting and platformer/adventure genre (I think Hennig doesn't even like to use the term 'platformer'), it's the characters, how they interact and are foils to each other is where I think Hennig shines.

Think a completely different direction like Nova or a group of space-faring heroes could be fun too.

@bkmeijer1 - oh shit she wrote that? Well the game moved up my hype list.

@TheSuperMex - she is on the writing team, but not as head writer I think. Still, hope to see some of her character writing skills make it in there

I kinda assumed it was always gonna be a Sony exclusive because Sony also holds the movie rights, but I obviously forgot all the previous Spider-Man games (like the amazing Friend or Foe on the Wii) and even the non-exclusive rights to animation.

@bkmeijer1 - Friend or Foe! Damn I forgot all about that, probably because it took like an hour to complete haha. But they used the Rani movie designs and I always felt that was cool of them.

this doesnt quite break down what happened really and is very light on details , however it could of been an xbox exclusive but it didnt .

Insomniac first of all have always been one of sony's babies in terms of quality games , they wanted to become bigger and wider and not tied down so partnered with MS with sunset OD which was a sort of beta for spidey anyways and other comic book games , but also it wanted to be its own franchise and be a games as a service model where the game would expand over years, getting a bigger map, the map would change, new events would occur, the servers would always be live and just keep growing, i think there was meant to be a TV show at some point and in game you would have live streams from the devs and events hosted by them all hosted on the MS platform and their servers.

The agreement was MS would support them financially ,the online side of things would be promoted by MS and the marketing would be massive having events all over the world and events lead by MS, so insomniac were loving life and couldnt wait, they held their part of the bargain and MS......did not, they pretty much took the money and run and didnt support them at all, this along with the MS gaming crowd being very hard to please lead to no real marketing , it got some but not a full on viral campaign like they were promised and less than stellar sales, awesome game but the MS crowd and xbox crowd mainly come from a pc online background and have always stuck with the R6,CoD, forza,PGR etc when it comes to single player games they rarely get supported or a following, where as on other platforms single player games have always been the best experience. ....

So insomniac rightly got pissed off with MS and said fudge it then we will wait for the rights to revert and rumor has it now there is a sunset OD 2 coming to ps5 with a remaster of the first ....

meanwhile this was going off as mentioned in this article briefly Marvel games were becoming a shit show, or just super hero games in general, they were usually cheap movie tie ins that gave you a weekends worth of play, very basic and poor in design and just not selling at all, then with the success of the arkham games, but more so the marvel cinematic universe marvel said look we aint doing this anymore , our products now have to be stellar and this includes gaming, so the only people who will get their hands on our products are those who are going to use it as a passion project and truly give gamers and fans a AAA product.

So they approached many companies and studios MS being one of them, when they approached MS they showed no passion for the character or the game, went in with a half assed attitude and wanted to monetize it and make a pretty vanilla game, then when they met with insomniac it was like christmas for them, they already had the framework and a solid library of games but more so everyone they spoke to just loved spidey and everything about his universe and they ended up pitching years worth of stories without even being asked , i think if you watch the interview they said they got sidetracked for 2 or 3 hours building up this world and vision without even really being asked the questions by marvel and it was like an instant romance ....

Then with sony in the mix insomniac and sony kissed and made up and said look we respect each other lets get together and make this something special and the rest is history, and its this attitude why sony is getting wolverine and MS is yet to get an exclusive because all they see is dollar signs with no real passion behind any of their projects.
