Olivia Wilde's SPIDER-WOMAN Expected To Focus On Jessica Drew; Actresses Between 25-35 Being Sought

We found out that actress-turned-director Olivia Wilde will helm a Spider-Woman movie for Sony Pictures late last year, and it's now been confirmed that the story will focus on Jessica Drew...

Last August, we got word that Olivia Wilde (Tron: Legacy, A Vigilante) was set to helm a mysterious Marvel movie for Sony Pictures, and the actress/director took to Twitter shortly after to confirm that it will indeed be Spider-Woman. We haven't heard much about the project since, but The Illuminerdi has now shared some updates.

Despite the initial trade report indicating that Wilde - who will also pen the script with Booksmart co-writer Katie Silberman - may introduce a brand new character to take up the mantle, it sounds like we'll be seeing the original (and best?) incarnation of the hero, Jessica Drew, in the costume. The movie is also expected to remain true to Drew's original comic book origin (minus Hydra's involvement, presumably).

We're not sure if the studio has met with anyone for the role yet, but they are said to be seeking an actress between 25-35 to star.

There's nothing particularly major here (most of us assumed Jessica Drew would be the focus), but it's nice to hear that this one hasn't fallen by the wayside, and that Wilde and co. are beginning the casting process.

Sony has a lot of Spidey-centric movies in the works right now, and there's a good chance they'll all tie-together in some way. Whether we eventually see Tom Holland's Spider-Man join them in the SPUMC (or they him in the MCU) is up in the air for now.

I thought Wilde herself was playing the character. Interesting.

I'm torn, because I absolutely despise this universe and everything that it stands for in regards to filmmaking.

But on the other hand, I loved Booksmart and will be there for anything Olivia Wilde makes (I can't wait for the one she just did with Florence Pugh, and I'm *really* looking forward to that Kerri Strug movie she's doing with Thomasin McKenzie), so... I just don't know.

Realizing there's no way this ends with Olivia Wilde in a Spider-Woman costume

Since it would make perfect sense I was hoping it would be

But I keep forgetting that Sony thinks it does not need Marvel Studios

@Selonian - I hope they bring her back for the sequel. She was by far the most interesting character in Legacy

@Godzillakartt - Agreed. It seems they are figuring it out as they go along. Hopefully we will know sometime before Morbius comes out.

Ignoring the literal "It's the same, but different" approach here ... How exactly would one remain true to an origin that's basically retconned every five or so years?

@Reeds2Much - Right like something tells me they’re not gonna have her be an evolved spider here.

Still weird that Jess is considered a Spider-Man character when she’s interacted with him so infrequently in the comics.
