Roberto Orci Confirms Exit From THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 3; Is The Franchise In Limbo?
With Star Trek 3 on the horizon, Roberto Orci confirms that he's no longer involved with The Amazing Spider-Man franchise since splitting with writing partner Alex Kurtzman and seems to indicate that Sony currently have no concrete plans in place for future movies...
It was recently revealed that Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman (who worked together on the Star Trek and Transformers franchise as well as The Amazing Spider-Man 2) had decided to part ways, leaving their involvement with The Amazing Spider-Man 3 very much up in the air.
We know that Kurtzman is attached to direct Venom, but with Orci circling Star Trek 3, he is indeed done with the Friendly Neighbourhood superhero. "I don't know what their plans are for that franchise," he replied when asked if he could return to the series in future after confirming earlier reports that he won't be back for The Amazing Spider-Man 3. "I don't ever want to say never, but we have to figure out what their scheduling is in terms of when they want each movie. I've read probably as much as anyone else. There's a love for the Sinister Six, the idea of Venom -- there's an idea of Spider-Man's going to be one of these characters that's part of our business. He's such a popular character. Spider-Man's not going to go away any time soon. When it all happens and how and all that has yet to be determined."
This all sounds VERY vague, and whereas the Sinister Six and Venom previously looked like a sure thing, they sound like anything but here. With recent reports indicating that The Amazing Spider-Man 3 has been pushed back to 2017, it sounds like the tepid critical response and underwhelming box office for the second movie may have led to Sony rethinking things, and they obviously haven't yet decided when and if these movies will now be released. Remember, Spider-Man 4 got into the casting stages before Sony decided a reboot was in order, so could the cash strapped studio rethink their plans for the Marvel superhero moving forwards? Is The Amazing Spider-Man franchise dead or simply in limbo? For now, we'll have to wait and see...
