I have looked through many pages on the site, and I have not found this information to be in the "news", "scoop" or "editorial" sections. However if this is a repeat, I do apologize. I also apologize if this appears rushed, I am trying to get this done before heading into a conference.
I have been reading the last few days that Roberto Orci has confirmed (as we already know - he's moving onto Star Trek) he is not attached to the next Spider-Man movie anymore, he also admits that Sony's franchise plans aren't yet clear.
Just to re-cap what Orci has said, he's made some comments which suggest that Sony may be reconsidering its options. "I am not officially involved in it", he told IGN of The Amazing Spider-Man 3. "I don't know what their plans are for that franchise. I don't ever want to say never, but we have to figure out what their scheduling is in terms of when they want each movie".
He continues "I've read probably as much as anyone else. There's a love for The Sinister Six, the idea of Venom - there's an idea of Spider-Man's going to be one of these characters that's part of our business"
And yet, while "Spider-Man's not going to go away anytime soon", Orci admitted that "when it happens and how and all that has yet to be determined".
During the credits of The Amazing Spider-Man 2, it was teased that a Sinister Six movie was in the works. Executives at Sony hoped that along with a Venom movie, the Sinister Six would help create a cinematic universe to compete with Marvel's. Due to the serious under-performance of TASM 2, the Sinister Six movie, along with the entire new Spider-Man franchise, may be DOA. Umberto Gonzalez (who I don't always buy into) of the tweeted: "RIP SINISTER SIX" yesterday, supposedly having "inside information" on Sony.
Even though nothing is officially cancelled, it's really no surprise that the franchise is in jeopardy. Special thanks to producer Avi Arad and Sony's executive meddling, the original script was tampered with to tease a cinematic universe. Marc Webb originally wanted to make a movie with more focus on Peter and Gwen's relationship and Electro's story. Instead, the executives crammed in Sinister Six as a subplot where Peter tries to find out what happened to his parents.
If I were Marvel/Disney, I would think this is the PERFECT time to buy back the rights to Spider-Man and all of it's characters. OR maybe Fox will give up on trying to purchase WB and look towards Sony.
Keep in mind, it was long rumored all of last year that Sony was looking to leave the movie business due to major issues behind the scenes. They might have provided a band-aid fix, to which the full injury may now be coming to a head.
I PERSONALY would hold off on Spider-Man for a little while. As long as possible, to give people some time to breathe. There was no time really between the original Spiderman movies and TASM movies. To expect everyone to buy into another origin and then an introduction to poorly introduced/rushed vilains was a major mistake on Sony.
What do you think the future holds? Will Sony sell Spider-Man to the highest bidder? (Marvel VS Fox) Will they rush yet another TASM movie? Will they try a partnership with Marvel to have Spidey part of The Avengers in hopes of breathing new life into the character and story?
