What could have saved the Spider-man franchise.

What could have saved the Spider-man franchise.

How choosing a stronger Peter Parker could have saved us from Emo Parker and a reboot.

As you all know, Spider-Man is getting a reboot. Honestly, I really don't like reboots, but in this case "Spider-Man 3" really messed up the series (a lot like B&R did the Batman franchise). In retrospect, they had a really great cast. J. K. Simmonds as J.J., William Dafoe as Green Goblin/Norman Osborn, Alfred Molina, as Doc Ock, and James Franco.

I will admit that Franco is a fantastic actor, I just think he got the wrong role. Franco has a very strong personality, one that takes charge, and as an actor he embodies his character. In my opinion he would have been the best choice for Peter Parker.

Why do I say this? Because Peter Parker isn't supposed to be a wimp. Yes, he is supposed to be a nerd, and yes, he's supposed to have issues with life, but Toby Maguire reminded me too much of the Harry Osborn from the 90's TV series. Growing up in the 90's I knew the Peter Parker who goofed up just so that he made sure nobody thought he was Spidey. Heck even in the series Parker wasn't a twig, he was built.

Hopefully the big-shots in Marvel won't make the same mistake twice. I'm just sad to lose the great ensemble cast that worked so well.

there was a LOT more wrong than Tobey Maguire. The series proved that it could survive/thrive with the cast it had. a franchise doesn't make it to a 3rd film if everyone hates the actors. and lets not forget that it WAS going to have a 4th movie, but it got scrapped due to things that had NOTHING to do with Tobey. and choosing a different actor to play Peter Parker wouldn't have saved us from "Emo-Parker." I don't know if you know this or not, but the actors don't write the movies. don't blame Emo-Parker on Maguire, blame the writers.

people need to stop blaming Tobey Maguire for what was wrong with Spidey 3. and to place all the blame for a reboot on him is completely ridiculous and unfair.

the 3rd movie just sucked really bad. the story more than anything. but the 1st and 2nd movies are considered to be some of the better CBM's to date by a LOT of people.

"Heck even in the series Parker wasn't a twig, he was built."

and um, what comics are you reading?? Spidey has always been skinny. lol

Toby was a great spider-man! it's not his fualt he didn't have countless clever quips and put-downs while fighting. that's Rami's fault. no doubt Toby would've pulled them off brilliantly!

and it's not his fault they crammed to many sub-plots into the third film.

im not sure where Toby was acting like a "wimp"- i thought he was badass at a lot of points. you gotta keep in mind the context of the character and what the symbiote does to him. he is a nerd. he is not cool. therefore when he gets something that accentuates his "dark-side" (something rami didn't like and another reason he was opposed to using venom in the movie) he's going to come across as ridiculous because he doesn't know what's really cool. he's a science nerd, so when he's trying to come off as cool he doesn't becuase he, peter parker, has no idea what that is.

im not defending this movie by any means. it was mess (but not like B&R like you stated. nothing is that bad) but im not sure why you think it's toby's fault. even in your article you don't bring up one specific thing toby did wrong as an actor. just that Rami's version didn't fit YOUR expectations. actors have no control over what goes on screen - it's all the director.

Would Franco have made a better peter? maybe - but he still would've been in the same movies with the same script and the same director.

and the "big shots at marvel" have nothing to do with this movie. it's sony all the way.

@ odin

i think he was saying Tobey was a wimp with all the crying scenes?? that seems to be what most people complain about.

cuz y'know...its totally ridiculous to cry when you're FATHER FIGURE DIES!!!! or when you realize that you just gave a spidey-strength back hand to the person you love.

i can understand people being upset about the lack of wise-cracks, (he DOES in fact make jokes, just not as many) but again, that isn't Tobey's fault, lol.

WTF!!! Whats wrong with crying cuz your father figure dies. He cried like hell in the comics. That doesnt make him a wimp. I cant believe you people called him a wimp for crying over the death of a loved one and crying over your love. What is wrong with you people. He cried for the right reasons

People must not know about love then. The crying was never a problem in the Spiderman trilogy. I agree a lot of problems were made in the trilogy but people are starting to get greedy and stingy. The pain he had put drama in the movie. So if your grandma/mom/dad/sis/bro died, you would get called a [frick]en wimp??? The same people who talk about improve this site and improve other things are hypocrites. They ram on things that dont [frick]ing make since for real. For example the Fan Fic problem. When the problem was fixed people that made sucky but detailed stories were getting rammed on. People saying you need to delete this because its taking up room. They did it correct but it sucked. Even people are trying to stop the "First" comments. Its only one comment and people compete. Yall B*tch abouth every little detail. Ya'll are the [frick]ing damn wimps because when one thing goes yall way, you people want to cry over shit and ram on things that dont need to be rammed on. He crys even tho he has powers. Even since he is super strong that doesnt mean he doesnt have [frick]ing feelings. Yall are [frick]ing wimps. Cry baby ass shit yall doing. [frick]ing pissing me off

I just want to see Spidey be Spidey. You know always cracking jokes. Yea, Tobey did make jokes but they werent even Spider-Man worthy. I was ok with him crying at the funeral or when Ben died but he cries way too much in the other 2.

All in all. This is basically how the trilogy went down.
Spider-Man: Learning to use his powers.
Spider-Man 2: Starts loosing his powers(from a broken heart. Really Raimi?).
Spider-Man 3: He turned all symbiotic(or emo).
They didnt develop Spider-Man's character at all.
