After wrapping up the Arkham trilogy with Batman: Arkham Knight, all eyes were on Rocksteady to see what they would do next. For years, rumours persisted that a Superman game might be on the way and, eventually, we'd learn they had actually been developing Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League.

Initially, the prospect of taking control of Task Force X and pitting them against the League excited fans. However, gameplay footage disappointed many, as did the fact these villains would ultimately kill the likes of Batman and Superman.

The game launched to middling reviews earlier this month, not to mention a great many technical difficulties and bugs. Now, Warner Bros. Discovery's Chief Financial Officer Gunnar Wiedenfels has admitted that Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League fell well below the company's expectations.

"We are lapping the release of Hogwarts Legacy in February last year, which saw the largest portion of its very positive financial impact in the first quarter," he said during an earnings call on Friday.

"This year, Suicide Squad, one of our key video game releases in 2024, has fallen short of our expectations since its release earlier in the quarter, setting our games business up for a tough year-over-year comp in Q1."

From one of the most anticipated video games in recent memory to a veritable flop, Rocksteady really dropped the ball with Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League. Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav said last November that the company hopes to turn its biggest franchises into live service games, but this one proves that's easier said than done and not something most gamers want.

It's been reported that fewer than half the number of players who signed into Marvel's Avengers on its first day did the same for Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League this month, and there are now fears Rocksteady will pull the plug on the free content they've promised players for the next two to three years.

After all, with so few people buying and playing the game, there's little to be achieved from putting time and money into those expansions. Unfortunately, that just makes the way Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League's story ends even more unsatisfying.

From Rocksteady Studios, the creators of the Batman Arkham series, Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League is a genre-defying third-person action shooter where the ultimate band of misfits must do the impossible to save the world: Kill the Justice League.

Play as the Suicide Squad, (Harley Quinn, Deadshot, Captain Boomerang, King Shark), as they set out on an impossible mission to Kill the Justice League.

Drop into an expansive and dynamic open-world Metropolis ravaged by Brainiac’s invasion and terrorized by the heroes who once protected it. Experience gameplay that brings together a unique fusion of enhanced traversal, gunplay, and melee combat, combining free-roaming exploration and combat verticality for an unforgettable experience.

Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League is now available to buy on all major platforms.

Can't say they didn't earn it, they made every bad creative decision possible.

@HashTagSwagg - all they had to do was make a single player Suicide Squad game and they'd be waaay better off, instead they [frick]ed around and found out. Play Helldivers 2 instead

Just gimme excellent single player comic book games that don't require constant payment. If you make excellent DLC, I'll buy that also

With all the negativity and issues surrounding the game, what did they expect exactly?

And to pick that over an open world Superman game makes all those decision makers a

It's a pity though, they spent 9 years on that game. I doubt Rocksteady will recover from it without some major changes and layoffs.

@UniqNo - The Rocksteady that made the Arkham games is already gone. They’re the Rocksteady we knew in name only

@UniqNo - This game took 9 uears to make, while gta 6 will have taken 7 years to make by the time its released next year. Let that sink in.

@UniqNo - Yeah, can't really compare Rocksteady to Rockstar though! Rockstar is worth like 20 Billion and has alot more resources.

Good. You don’t follow up a story driven experience with a poor man’s Destiny

@FireandBlood - The Death of Multiplayer games continues. People want exactly what you said: Story Driven Experiences. The only way to achieve that is with single player games. There is a reason games like Fortnite, Rocket League, and Apex Legends remain popular. They are quick and people can just play a match or two and go back to their single player journeys.

A type of game everyone hates, starring characters no one cares about flopped ? Who could've seen that coming.

The characters that you play in SSKTJL are unbearable, WB should have just made sequels to Arkham Origins.

With the original Rocksteady founders leaving and starting over with a new studio and some of their old dev team, I can't help but wonder what must have happened to that studio, but obviously it was a disastrous idea. They made a current gen game that runs and looks worse than a 2015 one.

My money's on DIE initiatives and ESG scores.

I'm starting to think making live services games might not be the way to go. Atleast not from the start. A game needs to earn it, and this one certainly didn't.

Arkham Knight wasn't even that good, Rocksteady's first mistake was not bringing back Paul Dini to write their games.

@FlopWatchers5 - Come on buddy defend it.

"The Suicide Squad shits on this game big time lol

better graphics, gameplay, and traversal."

"didn’t read none of that bullshit lol.

don’t need a publication or popular consensus to dictate what i like. hope you get a chance to know what that feels like 🐱"
