INDIANA JONES AND THE GREAT CIRCLE Latest Gameplay Footage Perfectly Channels The Tone Of The Movies

During the Xbox Game Showcase earlier this month, Bethesda and developer MachineGames debuted some extended footage from Indiana Jones and the Great Circle.

Announced back in January 2021, Indiana Jones and the Great Circle is an original story starring the famed archaeologist, set between the events of Raiders of the Lost Ark and Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. Drawing heavily from the film series, the globe-trotting adventure follows Indiana Jones as he attempts to thwart the sinister forces who are scouring the globe for the secret to an ancient power connected to the Great Circle.

"From the hallowed halls of the Vatican and the sunken temples of Sukhothai to the pyramids of Egypt and the snowy peaks of the Himalayas, Indy’s latest journey will send him around the world in a race against time as he hunts down mysterious and powerful artifacts," Bethesda explains, setting the stage for the new footage. "But Indiana isn’t the only one on the trail of these artifacts. Working with Gina, Indy will face off against Voss and his men in the hunt for the secrets of these relics."

Following an intercepted message, Indiana and Gina have tracked down one of the artifact locations deep in the Himilayas of Nepal. After a treacherous trek through the mountains, the two arrive at a frozen battleship tucked away in the peaks.

Naturally — and this should be familiar to anyone who has watched the Indiana Jones movies — Indy and Gina are greeted by a squad of Nazi soldiers, led by a man named Gantz. From the magnificent set pieces to the incredible voice acting to the perfectly tuned score to the actual sequence of events, the cinematic narrative that unfolds feels just like you're watching one of the classic movies. And for those wondering, the voice you are hearing for Indiana Jones is none other than Troy Baker, the same voice behind Joel in The Last of Us franchise.

"Working with Indiana Jones makes you want to pull experiences from the wide range of set-pieces that made you go ‘Wow!’ as a kid,” said Game Director Jerk Gustafsson. “We all remember the thrill of seeing Indy’s daring and often narrow escapes, and we want to have those kinds of moments in the Great Circle as well."

Gameplay in Indiana Jones and the Great Circle is primarily played in the first-person perspective with players wielding Indy's trademark whip to distract, disarm, and attack enemies. The whip is also used for navigating the environment, such as swinging over unsuspecting patrols and scaling walls. Gameplay in general is said to be a mix of stealth infiltration, melee combat, and gunplay. We've gotten a glimpse of all of this and more in previously released trailers.

Indiana Jones and the Great Circle is currently in development with a release window set for this year. It's coming to Xbox Series X|S and PC. It will be available to play for free day one through Game Pass.

Does that mean you think it looks good or bad?

@DocSpock - it looks… off. Not bad but… not inspired either. Very by the numbers.

I was getting King Kong vibes (2005 game).

@YouFlopped -

Yeah, like that for me too. I like 1st person perspective, not 3rd. I'm not playing 1st generation Doom.

Its missing a filter or some film grain. Motion blur maybe. Just too polished and floaty

@xfan320 - in fairness, it's a AAA release. They tend to include things like that in the options, and keep it like this to show off the graphics.

I would much prefer if this game were in 3rd person view. I get enough of a sense of 1st person view from real-life Harriosn Ford as is.

@IAmAHoot - I hadn’t looked at the game play before I read the comments. Damn, man. First person a bummer

The movement looks a bit janky, but I like the humour. It's doing a lot to feel like Indiana Jones. Which is a huge selling point as far as I'm concerned.

@TheManWithoutFear - I kinda like the jankiness. Think the old movies also had that kind of feel, so I think it fits (but in video game form)

Looks fun!!.

Troy Baker as Indy isn’t quite Harrison Ford but it’s close , the essence is there atleast imo.

I do wish it was third person rather then first but oh well , I’ll deal with it.

@TheVisionary25 - can definitely tell it's Baker and not an impression of Ford, but I like it nonetheless. Think it even fits really well.

And I understand you and @IAmAHoot would prefer a third person view. Uncharted and Tomb Raider show it belongs with an adventure game, but I like how the first person view helps in setting itself apart from those franchises.

@bkmeijer1 - I like it too

Also that’s fair and I understand why they did it.

Looks like it could be a pretty solid Indiana Jones game, interested to see how it'll stack up to the likes of Uncharted 4 and Rise of Tomb Raider, which are easily some of the best action/adventure games with an exploration gimmick.

Harrison Ford over 10 years ago, "I'm too f'n old to do this sh1t."

We all agree bro. Retire your sorry a$$ bro and save what little of pride/humiliation you have man.

Between this and Terminator, I don't know which franchise has the least amount of life to continue with the new generation. I feel like the Knives Out franchise is what a lot of franchises should follow. Follow a specific character but each film stands alone on its own while not entirely a sequel but a story that exists within the world of the major franchise.
Izaizaiza
Izaizaiza - 6/15/2024, 9:32 PM
@SonOfAGif - God, I wish so many franchises would follow that model
Knightrider
Knightrider - 6/15/2024, 9:41 PM
@Izaizaiza - I agree. Even the old Bond movies were kinda like that.

Izaizaiza
Izaizaiza - 6/15/2024, 9:49 PM
@Knightrider - Yeah man, I think the MCU should have done that after endgame. They were too focused on trying to catch lightning in a bottle a second time
bkmeijer1
bkmeijer1 - 6/16/2024, 2:41 AM
@Izaizaiza @SonOfAGif - following stand-alone adventures would be better in case if it's the main character we're watching for indeed. My own life doesn't feed into a larger narrative, so I don't need the movies to do so either.
SonOfAGif
SonOfAGif - 6/16/2024, 6:26 AM
@bkmeijer1 - That's exactly what I mean. How many artifacts can he retrieve to save the world before the audience grows tired of it? How many times does Optimus Prime need to be resurrected to defeat Megatron? How many times does The Terminator need to travel back in time before it becomes stale? I feel like characters like Hercule Poirot from Murder on the Orient Express and Benoit Blanc work so well because each film exists in their own world but each story is standalone. They have sequels but you can not watch them and just dive into a different story in that world without the constant need to go back and catch up.
bkmeijer1
bkmeijer1 - 6/16/2024, 7:11 AM
@SonOfAGif - that's a really good point about Optimus Prime or the Terminator. I kinda wanted to mention Ethan Hunt as a character that can keep going on adventures, but it does become tricking if it's saving the world over and over again.

This looks like shit lmao why would they make it first person
Timerider
Timerider - 6/16/2024, 1:03 PM
@thunderpun573 - because they thought it would be cool if it felt like you were cracking the whip and Harrison Ford probably wanting a yacht full of money for using his likeness. I wonder how much he’s getting for Star Wars Outlaws, he’s frozen in carbonite, well, just his face.
