CRISIS ON INFINITE EARTHS Movie Was In Development Prior To DCU Reset

Fans are still coming to terms with the major DCU reset news that hit earlier this week, and a new report has now confirmed that the old guard was indeed working towards a Crisis on Infinite Earths movie.

It's been a tumultuous couple of days for DC fans, with the news that James Gunn and Peter Safran are planning a major overhaul (possibly even a full reboot) of what was previously known as the DCEU leading to a lot of uncertainty about what to expect from DC Studios going forward.

Gunn has confirmed that at least some of the original report is accurate, although it sounds like there might be a slim chance that the likes of Gal Gadot, Henry Cavill, Jason Momoa and co. remain on in their respective roles.

Even if they do, it's highly unlikely that any of the projects they were previously attached to will see the light of day - including a Crisis on Infinite Earths movie!

We had heard rumblings that a massive event film based on Marv Wolfman's 1985 crossover comic series might be in development, and THR has now confirmed that "cameos in forthcoming DC movies would have breadcrumbed to a giant tentpole movie inspired by the now-classic Crisis on Infinite Earth comics of the 1980s."

Apparently, Walter Hamada actually wanted this film to mark the long-awaited return of Henry Cavill as Superman, but Black Adam star Dwayne Johnson "had his own plans and muscled his own Cavill return."

Is a COIE adaptation now off the table? Probably, although the trade seems to feel that "Gunn and Safran can and will resuscitate some of these heroes," so there's always a chance certain ideas and concepts will be revisited down the line.

The DC Studios co-heads are set to present their DC plan to Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav next week, so let's hope an official announcement is imminent. In the meantime, let us know what you make of this news in the comments section.

It's a little strange that all of this info is coming out now, but I really don't need to see a Crisis film, the CW already did it and it's completely unnecessary.

@FilmGuy7878 - Ah yes, the low-budget, low-quality CW Crisis was the definitive adaptation.

@Uhhhhhh - LOL that's what I'm saying. You really can't get a massive event like Crisis right in a 5 part special or a 3 hour movie. CW tried it's best with what it had but just no.

Don't you think it would make sense to have an established DCEU before doing a crisis movie?

Seems WAY too premature for them to try that when the audiences weren't even invested in the handful of films they already had.

They only had one Superman film and even then not everyone was sold on it. Everything else was down hill in quality. Then they wanted a crisis movie?

Talk about putting the cart before the horse.

Jumping to crisis seems on brand with the former regime…ridiculous

seriously done now or anytime soon, this would be the most hollow adaption of an event comic ever made.

DC was celebrating decades of history when that was published, everything from the multiverse, kamandi, anthro, jonah hex and everything in between

the dceu barely touched anything needed to make it a satisfying adaption

just do an animated adaption with the dcau cast (batman's role isnt large and they can find a way around the lack of conroy)

@dracula - What the hell is Kamandi and Anthro lol?
dracula
dracula - 12/9/2022, 7:24 PM
@FilmGuy7878 - kamandi the last boy on earth (use to be set in between present day and legion of superheroes time, now just alternate universes)

Anthro the first boy, basically a cave man character
FilmGuy7878
FilmGuy7878 - 12/9/2022, 7:25 PM
@dracula - So essentially DC's version of the Flinstones and the Jetsons but it's one kid.

comicfan100 - 12/9/2022, 7:31 PM
@FilmGuy7878 - Kamandi is anything but The Jetsons. The closest thing to that is The Legion of Super-Heroes. It's basically a post-apocolyptic future. It's more I Am Legend

dracula
dracula - 12/9/2022, 7:37 PM
@FilmGuy7878 - kamandi is more like their take on planet of the apes, in fact it was created after they failed to get the rights to make planet of the apes comics

@dracula - Huh I'll check it out.

@dracula - now this is an idea. Animated crisis wouldn't really need much back story. A direct adaptation from the books
dracula
dracula - 12/9/2022, 7:59 PM
@hue66 - plus jlu alone covered enough dc history for it to work

could even use stuff like the gods and monsters characters to fill in some characters small roles
GarthRanzz
GarthRanzz - 12/9/2022, 8:45 PM
@dracula - I dont know. Would they use film stock of Kirk Alyn? Technically they have 75 years of history.
dracula
dracula - 12/9/2022, 8:47 PM
@GarthRanzz - but most of that history is batman and superman

At best they could throw in halley berry and josh brolin as jonah hex

@dracula - Ryan Reynolds Green Lantern.

I mean if they’re rebooting everything, that would be a good way of continuing the current into the new. Figured they’d be doing it with Flash anyway

"It's been a tumultuous couple of days for DC fans" Yeah the best DC TV show that ever existed and was a passion project for it's creator Geoff Johns ended two days ago and all thanks to Zaslav selling the network to his fellow cheap penny pinchers buddies that axe everything for unscripted crap no one past 50 will invest and will never understand the power of storytelling and how it brings audiences together aka their customers.

Oh wait you're talking about DCEU.

Crisis can work as long as they build up and plan ahead. Like you know the Arrowverse did it and how also Stargirl does it even if it's on a much slower pace.

Funny how DC TV always comes out on top in terms of these than their big film peers.

It's all about the pace really and understanding patience.

And I still think an overhaul of even the actors is a bad idea.

Save crisis for later…. Other JL stories can be adapted.

I’d go with something simple at the start (Darkseid and Crisis are too ambitious for the stages the DCEU were in). Simple alien attack, or Amazo, or Parasite.

My personal wish albeit a pipe dream is to see the Blackest Night / Brightest Day storyline play out on the big screen. Yes it’s ambitious, so I’ll hope to see it in 15 years 😂

FilmGuy7878 - 12/9/2022, 7:33 PM
@TheHummus - Personally, give us the Legion of Doom. I grew up with Challenge of the Superfriends and it would be so freaking cool to see the JLA face off against them on the big screen.

@TheHummus - I would throw White Martians into the hat. It would be a good way to explain to the audience what the metagene is and why people keep getting powers in the DC universe.

Superman shouldn't have been erased anyway.

No one talks enough about the things Gunn is willing to adapt. He chose Starro as the main villain for Suicide Squad and you took it 100% seriously when anyone else would've grounded it. The League's first outing under him should be something just as crazy and out of left field.
FilmGuy7878
FilmGuy7878 - 12/9/2022, 7:38 PM
@comicfan100 - White Martians, Ocean Master, Royal Flush Gang, Vandal Savage, Despero.... should I go on? I absolutely agree.

Only thing I’m intrigued by is batman. Will they have 2 seperate Batman franchises running at the same time? Or do they have Pattinson’s Batman become the DCU Batman. I would not mind a superman movie set in The Batman’s world.
FilmGuy7878
FilmGuy7878 - 12/9/2022, 7:42 PM
@DesiSpiderman - OH YES. Like The Batman took inspiration from noir detective films, Reevesverse Superman could take inspiration from classic 50s sci-fi films like Robot Monster, Warning from Space, ect.

Sounds right. There were rumors that The Flash film was building to Crisis.

So we're just throwing out titles, are we? Well, I happen to have it on good authority from a highly respected inside source that one of the movies in development was DC Death Metal. Henry Cavill was going to sport a bitchin' mullet and torn roadie shirt and everything.

I trust my source. He assures me he worked at Nintendo.
