Editorial Opinion

Hey, to all. It's been a while since I've done an editorial but I do feel strongly about this subject so I thought I'd share my opinion. Now, I understand we are all a bit tired of this subject, but lets beat the dead horse just one more time.

Several have voiced their opinion that Superman should have never killed Zod in the final act of Man Of Steel. Most fault the writers for putting him in that situation, as they believe that if Superman kills he becomes the very thing he is fighting. I understand this opinion. I do not agree with it and I'll tell you why.

Superman has killed in the comics. Those saying Superman never kills need to read more Superman stories. In Superman #22 (October 1988), Clark executed General Zod, Quex-Ul and Zaora.

In The Death Of Superman Superman kills Doomsday. Most would say this was just because he was a monster set on killing and had no higher brain functions. But what had Zod become in Man Of Steel? Had he not become a monster which was just going to keep killing no matter what? Clark pleaded with him to stop but his answer was, "Never."

In a more recent comic Superman almost had to sacrifice Heather even though she was being mind controlled by an alien because she was going to kill hundreds if not thousands if he didn't stop her. Sure it worked out that he didn't kill her, but if she had of died would he have been wrong?

Superman killed in the animated series. In Justice League: Secret Origins all the Justice League members ultimately pull the evil aliens into the sunlight killing them.

Did anyone have a problem with that?

Superman has killed robots.

Most would say that robots don't have high brain functions so this is okay from their point of view. But yet it is shown wrong if someone kills Vision. So what's the difference? I'm not saying it's wrong to kill evil robots, I'm just saying if you have a problem with Clark killing humans or aliens why not robots as well?

Some try to say that in Man Of Steel Clark was reckless and didn't care about human life. Someone even stooped so low to make this cartoon.

The above cartoon shows only what some want the situation to look like. It shows a reckless Superman that doesn't care if he kills someone or not. Man Of Steel never showed this. Clark is devastated by all who lost their life in the film. Including Zod. In Man Of Steel Clark is addicted to saving people. Seeing Johnathan die when he could have saved him nearly killed him.

Thus the way Clark is portrayed in Man Of Steel is not the problem. What is the problem? Some don't understand what really happens in a fight. First, have you ever fought someone? No, not a school fight. Someone who wanted to kill you. Were you trying to stop them from killing you/others or were you trying to knock them out so you could turn them over to the police? The problem is some think that you can fight someone and not kill them. The line is harder to draw then most think. Do you realize if you punch someone, you have a chance of killing them on the first blow? Fighting isn't something everyone can just walk away from and be okay. If you fight someone, you have to be willing to kill them. Who knows if you might just hit them too hard one time? You may not know your own strength. This is why you have to be careful who you fight.

Several complain about the destruction of Metropolis calling it, "Destruction porn." Would you rather have Clark let Zod go to not only kill that family but more of the city as well? If Clark couldn't kill him how would he have stopped him? He couldn't use the wormhole trick again so what did you want him to do?

And about that wormhole trick. While I honestly think that everyone in the wormhole will survive (mainly because Colonel Hardy, and Dr. Hamilton are very important to Superman stories so I doubt they would kill them off in the first movie) but what if they didn't? Clark has no idea if it would kill them or not honestly. If it did would anyone fault Clark for making them go into the wormhole? Technically if it did kill them, he would have also indirectly killed Colonel Hardy and Dr. Hamilton. Which were the good guys!

Several say that Superman is different than other heroes because he is the only one that has the "no killing rule". This is very untrue. Back in the 50's and 60's EVERY Superhero had a "no killing rule". That's right Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, and pretty much all those heroes that have killed several times in the movies were portrayed in the comics at the time and somewhat even today as to have a "no killing rule". This is mainly because of the comics code established sometime in the 50's. Several writers adhere to the tradition today as well so that the good villains aren't killed off. So Superman in having a "no killing rule" is not special at all. I bet even if Deadpool had of been created then he would have suddenly gotten rubber Katanas.

I've heard it said that after Man Of Steel Superman should suddenly start his "no killing rule". Why I ask? Was the destruction in Metropolis not enough for you? Do you really want him to not try to stop Brainiac? Or Darksied? I'm not saying he should be able to just kill all the villains he faces easily. I'm just saying he shouldn't try not to kill them. Besides if he could kill them easily at any time, how much of a threat does the villain become? You should have a villain at least equal to the hero right?

I never understood the idea of having the hero want to kill the villain but ultimately they can't because of... what? So that they can kill more innocents? This is where the logic fails. But if the hero kills then he's just like the bad guy! Wrong. If he doesn't try to stop the bad guy then he is just as guilty as the bad guy for he is the very thing that lets him continue! It's much like a forest fire, if you don't put out the flames they will continue to burn and burn until nothing is left.

So which would you rather have? The hero that stops the villain from killing more innocents? Or the hero that allows the evil to continue?

I wasn't really bothered by the whole ordeal. This is Superman's first fight in that universe. He's not the Superman we know, he's learning, so he's going to make some mistakes along the way.

StrangeBlackPantherDoctor Thanks! I put the spoiler warning so that no one can say I didn't warn them. Some people are so stupid sometimes you have to warn them of the obvious. LOL

Destroyer14 Me neither, I was surprised so many had a problem with this but didn't when Batman killed Talia in TDKR. I guess shooting a missile at a vehicle which ultimately kills the driver doesn't count for killing? Plus he let Ra's die in Batman Begins as well.

Wait he killed him? I thought he put him to sleep.

Honestly I would have changed the entire fight scene and made Superman and Zod have a pillow fight instead then they gossip about Lois & Faroa then they watch TV and see an ad that has Lex Luther selling real estate.

Killing Superpowered villains is different from killing human villains....they can be locked away or better yet can be turned over to the use of the good old DEATH PENALTY instituted by the people for the bad people.

If JLA ever comes out and DARKSEID is ever the enemy....you better believe they wont just slap him on the wrist and tell him and good night story until the next time. Real life situations are not like the cartoons.

I really don't mind the killing, just the way it was done.

Snapping Zod's neck just seemed like really dark and out of place. And I wouldn't mind if the rest of the movie was that dark but it really wasn't so it just didn't fit for me.

And yea obviously thousands of people died due to the destruction but I'm pretty sure not one other death was actually shown or even referenced in the movie.

I think people WANT to be outraged. There's nothing wrong with what Superman did in the movie. It wasn't accidental, it wasn't like Snyder didn't know what to do... it was very much intended to be that way.

You know, a man can say that he'll never lose his temper, never lash out, never shout at those he's angry with.... but when the pressure gets to him, that man is going to do the human thing.

I'm going to give my usual Mass Effect comparison, heh.

You don't need to have played the game to get what happens in the video. Your friend has spent the last two years mourning you by trying his damnedest to make a difference, to fill the void that was left by your "death". When you come back, you find out that he's become the vigilante "Archangel" who waged war against organized crime, even recruiting his own band of operatives. One of those operatives sells him out, and all three mercenary groups have set aside their differences to eliminate him. You come to his rescue, and he barely escapes with his life.

He wants revenge against the one who betrayed him. It's up to you to either help him take the shot and become a cold-blooded killer, or talk him down. Most people find Garrus to be a total badass and don't want to get in the way of his revenge, so they'll let him take the shot and think nothing of it. Those who would be against Superman killing Zod, however, would follow the "paragon" option of literally standing in Garrus' line of fire while making his target spill his guts out.

It's up to Snyder to find meaning in what happened. I'm sure Superman is going to go through a crisis in the next movie - not only did he lose all connection to his Kryptonian heritage, but he also killed a man. Was he robbed of the choice? Did he not work hard enough to find a solution? What's to stop him from killing more people to solve his problems? He's got to forgive himself and then find a path of "redemption".

Your a vet on this site, you should know that your title has the spoiler before you mention that there are spoilers. Be more decisive about the wording in your description. BTW Supes had every right to kill Zod. Even Zod said one of the had to die in that fight.

Yes a hero can kill the villain. Hell my FAVORITE "hero" is Deadpool. He kills everyone.

What you can't do is allow the villain to kill millions of people and then act as if the life of the next four people he is going to kill is the reason he must die.

Superman should have killed Zod when they flew into outer space & saved millions of lives.

thank you for this article @superotherside, i love this movie to death, and i'm mad i've only seen it twice, now i'm debating on postponing pacific rim til next week for a 3rd viewing. Destruction in metropolis is necessary especially with a character as strong and powerful as superman, and wtf is the big deal? Superman could've saved lives in metropolis to minimize damage, yea it's possible if he didn't have an maniac bringing the pain to him 24/7. Zod never gave supes the chance to do anything for anybody barely, and you want him to take the time out and fly him to space? Cool, but in a real fight that's not just gonna happen. If you're bitching about superman fighting, really don't bother following the character anymore. I'm tired of these nostalgics that complain that it's not their 'superman'. NEWSFLASH, he hasn't been your superman in almost 30 years since the late 80's, so if your looking for the cordial blue boy scout, then watch the classics or even worse superman returns. Those films left a legacy that should be enshrined, never replicated or continue. The magic created in those films belong in the halls of our history, our memories, and embrace the re-introduction of this great character i've looked up to for so many years so that he may survive, and evolve again for the modern generation and future generations to come and love my favorite hero ever since i was born. With that being said, one love to all my fellow man of steel fans,SUPERMAN fans and all my cbm comrades. Godspeed to you superotherside.

JokerFanHAhaHA I don't understand why you think Superman is to blame for the destruction? Were the Avengers to blame for the destruction of New York? Zod and his army are to blame not Superman.

But even though Superman was off fighting that robot thing when Zod was destroying the city so by the time Clark got there the city was already in bad shape.

THANK YOU FOR WRITING THIS ARTICLE. escpicially about if you ever been in a fight. i dont think people realise that this was not dragonball z and clark couldnt just say hey lets move to an open feild and fight. no one does that often in real life, and if clark said that zod wouldve even went more bannans on metropolis. i really hate when people complain about the destruction. has anyone read a dc comic in there life. it is much worse than man of steel. just look at the new 52 justice league comic. Tired of people whining about this movie. go watch superman returns.

@JokerFan
Can you please point out in the fight when Supes had any chance to dtake the fight elsewhere? Supes was not in control ever in that. When Zod threw the satellite at him he tried to push it back from Earth but Zod rammed through it but no one gives Supes credit for that one. Majority just closed their eyes when stuff like that happens.

What the? You ruined the whole movie!!!!!!!! Ok enough of that.
Nice article. I was contemplating writing a similar one. Personally, most of my favorite characters would rather not kill but have done it without hesitation. The thing that always bugged me about Batman is his constant desire to keep the Joker alive. I mean, how many people has the Joker killed? Its not like keeping him alive is helping anyone. That's what drew me to the "Superior" Spiderman is that they made him a kill-if-I-have-to character.

@ superotherside

Finally someone brought up Supermam killing Zod and Company in the comics.

And honestly that was even worse than in the movie. In the movie he killed Zod to save a family from dying. In the comics he outright roasted Zod with Kryptonite and no one was in any immediate danger of being killed by Zod. There is a huge difference.

Anyone that says Superman is above killing does not truly know Superman. He has killed when the situation was extreme enough.

Good article. Someone mentioned about Batman killing Talia, so I will ask a question I've asked before. Batman supposedly has a no guns, no killing policy, right? Then why does he have guns & cannons on his Batpod & planes and stuff? Catwoman uses the cannon on the Batpod to kill Bane, and Batman had her blow open a whole in the tunnel, so obviously he had the cannons put on the pod (or at least didn't take them off if Fox was the one who installed them.) He has Catwoman use them to take out tumblers too, possibly killing those drivers. And he uses weapons on the Bat. In the very first Batman, Keaton's version is flying the Batjet and is shown targeting Joker and firing missiles & shooting bullets too (evidently, that was the worst targeting computer in history, lol.) So how can Batman really say he's against guns? What, is a pistol somehow worse than a machine gun in a jet? This is why I'm glad Superman killed Zod. I hope it at least somewhat leads us away from this holier-than-thou "I don't kill attitude" that prevails in DC comics. I don't want superheroes killing all the time, but it's time to realize that it is sometimes necessary.

Superman kills Zod so that when Luthor inevitably shows up in the sequel yammering about how this alien messiah could destroy humanity, his argument actually has merit.

Actually yes superman did not have to kill zod
He could have flow out with zod and the think of something like make a phantom zone to put him in
Superman is a hero that is not supposed to kill
Because he is trying to set the example
And about hi being just as bad
It could lead him going overboard with the killing just like injustice
And he he argument is better explored in superman v the elite
You made a point in he his article and I liked the movie but this is my rebuttal
