New Image Of Henry Cavill in Christopher Reeve's Superman Suit For MAN OF STEEL Audition Surfaces

Check out a new full-length image of Henry Cavill in Christopher Reeve's classic Superman suit that The Witcher actor believed was "too fat" to look good in.

This year marks that 10th anniversary of the announcement of Henry Cavill's casting as Superman in Zack Snyder's Man of Steel (2013). As the auditions took place at the tail end of 2010 and early 2011, the Man of Steel suit wasn't ready yet and Cavill had to audition in Christopher Reeve's classic Superman suit from the original Superman (1978).

Needless to say, it is quite different to the high tech modern suit that Cavill would eventually don in his three outings as Superman. What's interesting is that since Cavill was a far-cry then from his mega-buff, ultra-ripped Superman shape, he felt very insecure about putting on the form-fitting suit.

He recently told The Hollywood Reporter, "If I’m going to be honest, what was going through my mind was, ‘Lord, I’m too fat to be wearing this suit right now'". At the time of his casting announcemnt he had told Entertaiment Weekly in February 2011, "All I could think was: Oh, god. They’re going to look at me and go ‘He’s not Superman. Not a chance.’ The actor inside me was going: You’re not ready! You’re not ready!

Cavill was coming off filming The Cold Light of Day, a film where he had been ordered to lose the rippling eight-pack abs he had developed for Immortals. He told Time in June 2013, "It was petrifying, mortifying and embarrassing all at the same time. I was coming off a movie where I had to be out of shape, and then I had gone through Christmas, so I was extra out of shape. I just had to throw on this Lycra-like outfit, and that never looks good when it's basically a sort of sausage casing."

He further elaborated on his discomfort to Square Mile in July 2018. "It was a linen suit, and I wasn't in great shape. Linen doesn't look good when it hugs all the fatty bits. Don't try it, it's not worth it. I felt horrendous.

So much so that Cavill felt he might lose the job! He told GQ in June 2013, "It was totally embarrassing. I wasn't in training. I wasn't feeling fit or looking good, and you put on a Lycra suit and it does not help it. I just thought, OK, I'm not getting this job. I'm fat Superman. It'll be some really in-shape dude that when they step out they look amazing."

Clealy, director Zack Snyder did not think so as he has spoken about Cavill's audition through the years and has always noted that when he saw Cavill in the Reeve costume, he instantly saw Superman.

This isn't the first image that has been released from Cavill's audition, but it is the first full length shot.

His shoulders are loop sided.

@billnye69 - He's standing that way. He's not lop-sided in real life.

He has always been in good shape but damn he packed on even more muscle than I thought. Wonder how far removed these pics are from MOS.

I always wanted Cavil to go back to MOS body type.

He was big but not huge like he is now💁

KingLeonidas - 11/14/2021, 11:41 AM
@AmazingFILMporg - This is about 6 months from MOS filming start.

But you are right, his MOS body type is much much smaller than his current body type.

@KingLeonidas -

He looked great in MOS. Lean but bulky. Perfect body type.

Now he still looks amazing but he's becoming body builder type.🙎

@AmazingFILMporg - He's definitely gone the way of the Rock it seems. He has hired Rock's trainer and management and is kinda following that. So I think you can see that in the body type too. He has now gone away from leanness and gone towards big size for sure.

Just can't see HC coming back as Supes. Damn shame ...he was awesome in the role. Would love to see him back in MOS 2 or somethin like that.

@emeraldtaurus - I think we gotta wait for The Flash. Let's see what kind of shenanigans that movie pulls. If it breaks open the multiverse in DCEU, then there would be a path for Cavill to come back. Mind you never in a solo film, but as a significant supporting role. The solo film for Superman will be the Black Superman film that JJ is developing.

Curses, foiled again by this site randomly logging me out.

The Reeves suit still looks good in action, if you adjust the material so the actor's muscle definition pops a bit more and adjust the belt it would be ready to go for another movie.
KingLeonidas
KingLeonidas - 11/14/2021, 1:03 PM
@4thMaster - The Reeve suit will never really show in muscle definition. That is why Snyder went the way of the MOS suit.

And this suit would be considered very cheap today. This is quite literally what people wear on Halloween. You would expect a major 250 million dollar Hollywood production to spend more than that on a Superman suit.
4thMaster
4thMaster - 11/14/2021, 1:51 PM
@KingLeonidas - You are right, and I should have used "change" instead of "adjust" there. I was thinking of something like Black Adams suit could work for a man of Cavill's size, where the material just lets his muscles fill it out. Specially as the padding's muscle definition got progressively worse after MOS to the point where the suit looks ridiculous in JL.
I just think the fabric look works best for Superman, he shouldn't look like he has armor or protective gear on, looking like he's just wearing tight cloth helps make him look like he's invincible.

PS. I did explain myself much better in the OG comment I couldn't make, I wish this site would stop logging me out.

@4thMaster - Cavill's suit isn't that padded. Cavill did get much bigger after Man of Steel. So his look in BvS and JL is just reflecting that. Cavill is more than enough capable of filling out his suit just as much as The Rock.
Check out the suit of Russel Crowe in MOS too. He looks like a completely different shape than Cavill. So while the suit has some structure built in, it is not much padded at all. This ain't Zachary levi :D

If they fit it more to him, it'd be perfect. If it ain't broke
KingLeonidas
KingLeonidas - 11/14/2021, 1:42 PM
@Dredd97 - After his body transformation was done, it would fit him great.

Still not sure if they should have used this suit. I think a 250 million dollar movie shouldn't have the same suit that people wear on Halloween.
Dredd97
Dredd97 - 11/14/2021, 2:56 PM
@KingLeonidas - well I wasn't a fan of the eventual molded plastic suit he had in the movies. They could find a common ground, but the test/Reeve suit looks right out of a comic book
KingLeonidas
KingLeonidas - 11/14/2021, 3:08 PM
@Dredd97 - Cavill's suit is not molded plastic eve though it might look that way. It is a cloth suit but is highly textured so that it has a metallic gleam when lit.

Interesting how Adam West (besides obscure serial stuff) is the only live action Batman to wear the trunks onscreen. While every Superman but Cavill had trunks oncreen (Welling had the Returns suit). Not trying to make a point, i prefer both without, but it's funny how that turned out.
KingLeonidas

@FishyZombie - Tyler Hoechlin doesn't wear trunks either.

@FishyZombie - for some reason people will let Batman move on but not Superman. I think if we’d got the Burton version of Superman in the 90s it would have done for Superman what it did for Batman
FishyZombie
FishyZombie - 11/15/2021, 1:52 PM
@Twenty23Three - At the same time, I also really want to move on from Batman's all black rubber armor look. The Batman looks great but still.

@FishyZombie - without a doubt. Grey suit Batman is a must for me. Let the genie out the bottle with Affleck’s suit

@MaxPaint - lol. I wouldn't say he hasn't used it. But I don't think he did for MOS. MOS is naturally achievable. I would say something like The Witcher is more suspect - also due to the trainers used etc.

Man this is a shame! A crying shame! They did HC's Superman so wrong! So dirty! He never really got the chance to be the Superman he should have been. Now him playing the role in a movie that allows Superman to be true to the character ain't never gonna happen. Damn shame.

I will die in this hill but I think Man of Steele is a misunderstood classic. It’s by no means perfect but I still think it’s a fantastic Superman film for its time.

Superheroes are more relatable when they wear simpler costumes. But when they wear padded costumes that make them look like an action figure, they seem less real and the actor ends up competing against the costume.

Everything Zack Snyder did, was wrong.
