VOICES FROM KRYPTON: Obviously you’re a giant fan boy of the Legion. What is it about them that appeals to you so much?

GEOFF JOHNS: I like what it represents and I like the characters. I like the concept of different alien races in the future coming together because they’re inspired by the legend of Superman. I’m a fan of Superman, they’re all fans of Superman and in a way it’s like a team of fanboys. But I really like the diverse cast and the powers. And then there’s the scope. Green Lantern has a really epic scope to the backdrop and so does the Legion, if not a little more so with all of these defined alien races. I just really like the concept of these representatives from different worlds gathering together to form the Legion of Superheroes. It comes from the stories I read in the ‘80s.

VOICES FROM KRYPTON: I grew up with the Jim Shooter stuff in the ‘60s.

GEOFF JOHNS: I actually grew up on Silver Age comics because I read my uncle’s in my grandma’s attic, so I got introduced to the Legion through Adventure Comics originally. That’s why my taste skews old school, because I first read comics that were checkerboard DCs, and that’s how I got into comics. In mid ‘80s to late ‘80s, I skipped from checkerboard DCs to late ‘80s and if you look at what I gravitate towards, it’s a combination of those two eras. They’re good eras, I think.

VOICES FROM KRYPTON: With DC re-launching ADVENTURE COMICS, do you expect to take over the Legion?

GEOFF JOHNS: I’ll be doing some more Legion work in 2009, but so far I’m really happy that the projects have been Superman and Legion and ACTION and LEGION OF THREE WORLDS and SMALLVILLE. If I’m going to do it, I like to do it with a clear vision in mind. I know where I’d like to take the team and we’ll see. This year I’ve been wanting to expose the Legion to more people, whether it be through Superman or a crossover like Final Crisis or through SMALLVILLE. I think Legion of Superheroes is a concept that can break the comic book barrier. In order for it to achieve the success it once had under the Levitz reign it needs to be seen by more people.

VOICES FROM KRYPTON: Creatively, bringing the Legion to SMALLVILLE must have been very fulfilling.

GEOFF JOHNS: it was really exciting, because I thought we could do it in the context of Smallville that would really embody the importance of the Legion. I thought, too, the way they were moving the show this season, that we would be able to really stay true to the characters more than they perhaps have in the past. I was very happy that we were able to do that. I think we did a great job of capturing the essence of the Legion and the characters individually, and I hope that people agree when they see the episode.

VOICES FROM KRYPTON: From what I understand, the Legion are actually confused why Clark’s not Superboy and not flying.

GEOFF JOHNS: The Legion are VERY confused, because everything they know about Superboy and Superman and Clark Kent and Kal-El is stuff we know, so when they come back there’s a lot of things that are different. Part of the fun of the episode comes through that. They’re kind of like, “Why the hell aren’t you Superman yet?” As a fanboy, you’ll probably get more winks and nods and even bigger things that are comic book lore and things you probably never thought you’d hear uttered in an episode. We mention the Time Institute, we call the Persuader by name, we mention Polar Boy’s home planet – there are all sort of things in this episode that any fan in the know will know whoever did this, did the research.

VOICES FROM KRYPTON: Do you see yourself coming back to the show?

GEOFF JOHNS: If it comes back for season nine, but I probably wouldn’t be good or interested in doing a normal episode. But if they wanted to do another Legion episode or introduce another DCU character, I’d be interested.

VOICES: I need to know what it is that appeals to you about Superman?

GEOFF JOHNS: I love him because he’s always trying to do the right thing. I just respond to someone trying to do the right thing, because it’s such a simple value that if everybody lived by, the world would be a much better place. It’s so easy to just try and do the right thing and with Superman, that’s what he does. He has all these powers and if he’s using them to help others, what can I do to help others? I just respond to that.

SMALLVILLE EXECUTIVE PRODUCER DARREN SWIMMER

VOICES FROM KRYPTON: I would imagine that three people from the future dropping in and saying, “Hi, we worship you and your accomplishments” has to be moving to Clark and further pushing him towards his destiny.

DARREN SWIMMER: Clark always knew that he was destined to become a hero, but here we’ve got a situation where people have come back from the future and say, “You’re not only a hero, not only did you go on to do great things, but you basically changed the whole galaxy. There are all of these other worlds out there and it was because of Clark Kent that the world embraced people coming from other planets and alien refugees and things like that.” Not to get too science fiction on it, but it kind of puts Clark in a place where he wonders if he can live up to that future he’s been told about. He kind of has to ponder the issue of, “Is this set in stone or is life what I’m going to make of it?” At the same time, they come back and think, “Why aren’t you Superboy and flying around? This is wrong. You’re not the guy we know from our holo vids.” Overall, I think this episode is really a gift for the comic book fans out there. We have a lot of different types of fans, but specifically our die hard comic fans are getting a nod to them.

VOICES FROM KRYPTON: What was the decision behind bringing Geoff Johns aboard for this episode?

DARREN SWIMMER: We’ve known Geoff for several years, because he’s close friends with Jeph Loeb, who used to be on staff. We didn’t know if he would ever be interested in writing a freelance script, but the concept has kind of come up now and again over the years and he was always busy. We never officially asked him, but we were feeling it out. This year he expressed an interest through Jeph Loeb and I think it was specifically fueled by his wanting to see the Legion on SMALLVILLE, and we jumped at that immediately because we’d always wanted him to do an episode. So it was sort of a mutual thing that finally came together this year.

VOICES FROM KRYPTON: Is he somebody you would consider to bring back?

DARREN SWIMMER: He has a lot of projects he’s working on, but it’s definitely something we’d consider. It was a really great experience working with him.

YOU KNOW,FINALLY THEY HAVE PUT SOMETHING IN THAT WILL ULTIMATELY FORCE SMALLVILLE ON A RIGHT COURSE.THERE ARE SO MANY THINGS MISSING IN THE SUPERMAN LORE THAT FANS FAILED TO SEE, WHY ISN'T HE SUPERBOY? WHERES THE BLANKETS THAT EVENTUALLY BECOME HIS SUPERMAN SUIT? WHERES KRYPTO?..HONESTLLY I WELCOME THIS, ITS AS IF THE RIGHT GUY PUT IN A PATH IN THE SHOW THAT WRITERS WILL HAVE TO CORRECT AND RESPOND TO, AND IT WILL CATER TO DIE HARD FANS. ITS TIME TI FIX THE LOOPHOLES.

Hey guys, think they'll bring out "Beppo the Super Monkey"??

Krypto was introduced in an earlier episode of Smallville, albeit in a different way than the comic books. They introduced Krypto as a dog that was experimented on at Lexcorp. The dog gained its powers through a kryptonite injection.

Yeah I know it's not the "real" Krypto we all know and love but that was the way they introduced him.

It took me a while to get into this show. The freak-of-the-week scenarios where "someone gets weird powers-becomes evil-fights clark-figures out his secret-& then gets killed" really got to me & it was a little too 90210. I kept checking back though, & realized that it just kept getting better. There was a much smaller crap/good ratio each season. By the end of the 5th season it had made a definitive mark in DCU's multi-verse. (It won't match comic lore for the same reason that any of the other multi-verse don't, but it's stamped out it's OWN world quite well, I think :) It continues to get better & Geoff coming onboard is just one more example of how this show keeps setting the bar higher. I really can't wait for this.

MATTLASK-

Coming in here just to say "Smallville is gay" without giving a reason or backing it up...

...THAT'S GAY!

People take shots at Smallville all the time, but name another comic TV series that has lasted for eight seasons??

Know why you can't...because there aren't any!! Even THE INCREDIBLE HULK only lasted for 5 seasons and that was awesome!

Smallville is the longest running comic-based TV series of all time (not counting MADtv)!! Yet you come on a comicbook website to bash a show that has made so many people HUGE FANS of the genre, thus making it possible for movies like the X-Men series, the rebooted Batman series, and many many more to appeal to broader audience; which, in turn, is how they've been able to have so much success.

Bottom Line, you want more comic movies? Then, stop bashing the show that's helping to put butts in the seats.

That, or at least come with something better than that...

...f@ckin tool.

Talontd, first off crediting smallville for those movies is like saying Hill Street Blues paved the way for The Wire. Second, Smallville is as popular as it is for the same reason The OC is! it appeals to a teeny bopper demographic. Giving props to a show just because its ran for 8 seasons is like saying americas Got Talent is unmissable TV.

Now in saying all that i must add that i quite enjot Smallville, especially the last 2 seasons. But it is in no way benchmark tv. Heroes blows Smallville out of the water in terms of acting ability, action, and serious drama..not that thats a perfect show either! But just because Smallville has been decent for the last two or three seasons, i cant forget the first five that made Dawsons Creek seem like The sopranos

ROR-

Point taken; however, i wasn't completely crediting the success of those movies to the success (and you must admit it is a success) of Smallville. I was simply pointing out the fact that Smallville has introduced the genre to people (30 - 50yr olds) who might otherwise be completely uninterested in it.

My mom and dad watch Smallville, my Aunt and Uncle watch Smallville. Some of their friends watch Smallville. My Uncle is into Sci-Fi, but all the others aren't. They all went with a bunch of their friends to see each of the X-Men movies, TDK, aaaannnnnd Iron Man (like a bunch of kids)!!! The guys are just into them, but the women in their 30's and 40's go BECAUSE of Smallville.

My point is, that show hasn't been on that long JUST because of the teeny boppers. What's keeping the ratings up (or at least profitable) are the "out-of-the-norm" people that watch it. And those people, in turn, are spending money on this genre that we all love.

Oh, and The OC??? C'mon man, that's just mean! You could've at least compared it to Beverly Hills 90210, lol.

It was a great episode and at the same time a horrible episode. I love Smallville, it's my favorite show. I even have my own fansite right here at CBM for Smallville. (Shameless Plug!) But last night was frustrating!

I loved the whole "Hey Kal where's your Cape?" I don't expect to see the suit yet. But dammit I expect to see him fly REAL SOON! I hate that damn "No Flights, No Tights" rule. Miller & Gough are gone that rule needs to go with them. We have waited way to long to see Clark become Super and we are getting fed up!

As for last night, I like Chloe's character but if it gets his ass in the air then somebody needs to kill her!
Tom Welling is a great actor for this role and will be an awesome Superman if they let him. NO MORE LANA either. She just holds Clarks character back. So all in all I felt like the writers were mocking their own horrible decisions to hold back the character. If they are afraid advancing Clark to Superman will kill the series, it WON'T and if it did then so be it. Make Metropolis! There have been many awesome episodes of Smallville but it's time to advance the story. I can't wait til Infamous. Don't let me down Smallville writers!

lol, fair enough talontd! i think the reason the show annoys me so much is not that its bad, its that it could be AMAZING but just isnt consistent enough. One week they will show a great episode and the next an absolute travesty! But like i said the last couple of seasons have been mostly cool.

by the way do you know that episode wer people are being killed by the guy who can take shadow form? is that supposed to be Hawkmans enemy the Shadow Thief?

I find it so funny that people complain about smallville having freak of the week Yet they love the batman show that were basically The samething

Oh to the dude who ask why he not call Superboy because DC doesn't own the rights anymore because of two slut who said they had the name first

As for him not flying you I think it nice I mean Superman didn't fly until the early 70s in the comics
TucsonRican
TucsonRican - 1/16/2009, 11:38 AM
Try the 1940's. The radio show is the reason that He can fly. They changed his powers, as well as where he worked. It was orginally called the Daily Star. The radio changed to The Daily Planet.

But I'm sure you already knew that, being Supermike and all.
LastSon1027
LastSon1027 - 1/16/2009, 1:10 PM
The reason there is no Superboy is because DC does't own the rights to the name Superboy, the Siegal/Shuster families do. And in the current continuity of DC Comics there was never any Superboy. It was just Clark until he became Superman. Superboy exists on a parallel earth in the multiverse.

Smallville is not for comic book fans. It is on the same channel as Gossip Girls, and other crappy shows. We are basically looking at a soap opera, just with superpowers. But I still like it, and all of you still follow each episode hoping he will wear the "S". The show is not suppose to only appeal to you guys, but people who look at shows with drama.

So you can complain all you want, but that's the best soap opera out today.

Ok i only just got to see this. I liked it. I liked the Legion except for Lightning Lad..could they have cast a more annoying actor! I liked the nod to Brainiac 5 at the end too.

But im sick of the whole Chloe in trouble crap, it was old 2 seasons ago

LastSon1027 - 1/22/2009, 6:57 AM
I gotta agree with you Ror this Chloe is in trouble crap is almost as annoying as when Teri Hatcher got in trouble in every episode of Lois & Clark. I also enjoyed the nod to Brainiac 5 that was tight. I actually thought that Lightning Lad was alright. I thought Saturn Girl was terrible, her acting that is. No doubt she was hot she just couldn't act.
