Michael Rosenbaum Shares Update On SMALLVILLE Animated Series And Why He's Not In James Gunn's SUPERMAN

Smallville star Michael Rosenbaum has shared the latest on where things stand with the long-delayed animated follow-up and chimes in on James Gunn not asking him to make an appearance in 2025's Superman.

Smallville remains one of the most beloved comic book TV shows ever made and, for many DC fans, Tom Welling is their Man of Steel and Michael Rosenbaum is the Lex Luthor.

The series had a lengthy run, kicking off in 2001 before wrapping up in 2011 following a memorable 10 seasons (which somehow didn't see Clark Kent take flight and suit until the final episode). Still, fans were left eager for more and eventually got a comic book sequel detailing the hero's time as Superman.

Welling and Rosenbaum have spent years teasing plans for an animated revival and, in an interview with ComicBook.com. the latter confirmed it remains in the very early stages of development.

"Tom and I are working on a Smallville animated series that we're trying to get made. It's gonna take time," the actor explained. "But the creators of Smallville are attached, they want to be a part of it. And we, you know, when it's the right time, we'll pitch it."

"You know, we're working on it and we have some loose animation that we've worked [on] with someone who was just awesome. It looks great. So if we can get that made, that'd be awesome."

Warner Bros. Discovery and DC Studios will ultimately make that decision. The latter is run by James Gunn, an old friend of Rosenbaum's, and the Smallville alum would go on to ponder an eventual DC return and jokingly wonder why he hasn't been asked to appear in 2025's Superman

"Whatever comes to me, I look at it, and if it's not too silly, or if it makes me laugh, or I think I could do a really good job or I think I can make an impression, I'll do it. So I'm at that point in my career where I just want to do things that I love, that I want to do."

"I'd obviously love to work with my buddy James again. I asked him, 'Why am I not in Superman? Why am I not in the movie somehow?'" Rosenbaum added. "It was fine, though. I wish him all the happiness. He deserves all the success he has. He's enormously talented. When it's the right thing, he'll ask me. Or he won't."

"And that's aside from friendship. When your friends go off and do big things, you say, 'Hey, they know I'm here. They know my number.' And you just hope for the best."

Having Rosenbaum appear in Superman given his history with the character might have been a little too on the nose. Gunn did previously enlist the actor for the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise, something Rosenbaum has also recently commented on

@Mrtoke - I kinda agree. What's there to do? He's Superman once the show was over and then eventually we know he ends up giving up his powers. I guess there can be Superman stuff and then during the finale Clark makes the choice to give up his powers similar to Superman II.

@lazlodaytona - so are there no more threats for him to give up his powers? Cause after that, they made a Superman family show. What if other villains show up in Smallville and Metropolis? Whatever

@Mrtoke - I dunno but I feel like there's nothing they can do that hasn't been done before in animation and live TV. Btw, I was agree with you.

@lazlodaytona - depowered Clarke works as press for the White House. Animated West Wing/House of Cards with Lex as president.

It would have been cool to see him in the 4-part Crisis crossover the cw did. Just him and John Cryer going back and forth as 2 Lexes could have been epic.

However, I understand why Michael passed on making an appearance.

@lazlodaytona - too little money, allegedly it didn’t even cover the flight to Canada. I do understand that they didn’t have any budget left after all the guest stars and locations but still. Can emphasise with both parties

I'd sacrifice Gunn's Superman or My adventures with Superman like yesterday just to have some sort of revival, even animated.

@Doomsday8888 - i liked seasons 9 & 10 a lot.
Before that there was just too much teeney-drama for my taste.

@lazlodaytona - this sit pretty much captures all teen drama from Dawson's creek to Smallville to even CW teen shows.

It’s unfortunate that he’s not in Superman since I think a cameo could have been fun but oh well , maybe in the future…

Dude has good comedic timing so him just making appearances as like Steve Lombard at the Daily Planet could be fun.

However if Gunn or someone wants him as a hero or villain then I could also see Rosenbaum as Boston Brand/Deadman or Rudy Jones/Parasite.

Since we had the ‘season 11’ comics of him as Superman, then sadly they made that dumb decision to have him give up his powers in Crisis, im not sure where a follow up animation would go? Maybe the daughters who get mentioned start showing powers and it’s a ‘next generation’ of Smallville adventures

He wasn't asked.
