SMALLVILLE Alum Laura Vandervoort Expresses Disappointment With How Supergirl's Story Ended In The Series

After playing Supergirl for a lengthy stint in Smallville, actress Laura Vandervoort has shared her disappointment with how the Girl of Steel's exit from the hit series was handled during season 10!

Before the Arrowverse was birthed into existence, Smallville was the go-to DC TV show for fans. Running for 10 seasons, Clark Kent's transformation into Superman was a slow burn, and one that saw his cousin, Supergirl, beat him to becoming a superhero the world could turn to when villains attacked.

During a New York Comic-Con panel this weekend (via CBR), actress Laura Vandervoort looked back at her stint as Kara and expressed some disappointment with how her story reached its end.

"It's hard for me to remember every episode and what her arc was," the actress reflected. "I have said publicly before that I wish Kara was in more of the finale, at the wedding...she didn't really have closure. She just sort of flew off and we never saw her again. It would have been nice for myself personally and I think for the character to have goodbyes. I didn't have any proper goodbyes."

"And, you know, I think they could have explored more of her personal storyline," Vandervoort continued. "She was always --obviously, as she should be, it's Smallville-- involved with Clark's story, but we never really got to know her except when she had amnesia. That was an opportunity to explore who she was outside of that character because she was a blank slate."

"But otherwise, you know, it's the story of Clark Kent and Lex Luthor and I like how they peppered her in. It just would have been nice to see more about her personally."

Vandervoort was a regular in Smallville season seven as "Kara Kent" before being sidelined in season eight and nine ahead of a couple of brief appearances in the show's tenth and final season. More Supergirl in the series would have been welcomed, but it wasn't meant to be, and Melissa Benoist would later be cast as a new version of the Girl of Steel for a solo series on The CW.

My favorite show. Would’ve liked to have seen more of her after her season.

@theFUZZ008 - Should have at least kept her around until the end of the 7th season, she was a big part of the story, then she is sent away before it ends. So annoying when shows do that to a major character, if you are going to send a character away, at least wait until the end of the story

Yeah like seriously, she was a series regular for a year then disapeared for more than a full season, then went away again until the final season. Wonder if her being written out at the end of season 7 was a choice by the new showrunners, since the creators left after season 7. Too bad she didn't get a better role in Supergirl, Indigo was pretty forgetable

Crazy this show ended almost a decade ago. Makes me feel old. I remember watching the finale and thinking “meh”

Was 5 when Smallville started, me and my dad watched it from beginning to end. Was fun, although some parts of the show have not aged well

Yeah, Supergirl was pretty weak sauce in Smallville. I liked the early stuff when she was reckless and Clark was trying to teach her to how adapt to earth. After that, you could tell the writers didn't know what to do with her.

It went downhill after the great early season arc of Clark trying to teach her how to blend in and manage her abilities

@BlackBeltJones - should have ended at season 5, season 7 at the latest

@dracula - apparently the original creators said the show was going to end with season 5 and the final scene would be Clark beginning his training at the Fortress and then a time jump with him flying out like in the original 78 Superman film would be the final shot.

But WB wanted more seasons and eventually those guys left.

@BlackBeltJones - makes sense, they did kill off Jonathan that season and it was after that were they seemed to start running out of ideas and brought in stuff that he shouldn't really deal with until he is superman. After that season they brought in Green Arrow, The League and pretty much every major superman villain, all defeated before he was superman. Well if it werent for those following seasons boosting Green Arrow's popularity, we wouldn't have Arrow and obviously the arrowverse, so I guess some good came out of it
