SMALLVILLE: Tom Welling Continues Trying To Defend Not Wearing Superman's Suit In The Finale

Tom Welling controversially chose not to wear Superman's suit in the series finale of Smallville and now the Lucifer star has once again gone on record attempting to defend that infuriating decision.

Smallville fans waited over a decade to see Tom Welling suit up as Superman but the actor chose not to and that meant we only got to see him as a tiny CGI figure from the distance or from the neck up. It was a baffling decision, especially as he had been playing Clark Kent for so long but it seemed that the actor simply didn't want to be forever remembered as just another guy playing the Man of Steel.

Well, that's what he has been remembered as and not donning Superman's iconic costume hasn't really done much for his career. He is, however, now starring on Fox's Lucifer and recently shed some light on his decision not to wear the suit and revealed why he believes he made the right choice.

"One of
the things when we started the show was that it was going to be about Clark in high school," Welling reiterated. "It was not going to be about Superman. So at the end of the series, it was about trying to put Clark in the position where you knew he was going to become Superman, but you couldn’t go with him. But we hope the fans felt like it was good that they knew Clark was out there being Superman" As for whether he's happy with the show's ending, he said, "very much so."

"I wasn’t exactly excited with the idea of getting into tights anyways, so it worked out," Welling concluded in a statement sure to infuriate some fans. What do you guys think? Sound off below.

Welling will get into a casket before he gets into a Superman suit.

That's it. Nothing more needs to be said.

@nikgrid - exactly! Makes a big phucking deal about wearing it even for the last ten freakin minutes! Serves him right his career has gone down the dumps from it. That's his curse for not wearing it!
He's always gonna be remembered negatively for it! It's gonna be stuck with him for the rest of his life!

@Darlene1974 - To be fair, it's better than the Superman curse that scared off so many people from actually wearing it.

@Darlene1974 - His career is in the dumps because he is a shit actor. Be happy he never tried the blue tights on his skinny frame.

Would it have been so hard to just have one shot with Welling in the suit? He wasn't even typecast as Superman afterwards anyway. That wouldn't have changed because he wore the suit for 20 minutes.

"I wasn’t exactly excited with the idea of getting into tights anyways, so it worked out"

Let's be real, THAT was the main reason, the rest is bs! :P

I think he feared he would look silly, maybe if they used the MOS one instead of the SR, it could've changed his mind?

@Doomsday8888 - I don't know. The whole point of the show was that it wasn't really a Superman show and that's what Welling signed up for. I do agree though we really should have seen it.

@Origame -
They had some rules, but they broke each and every one of them as they moved forward.

Except the costume one...well technically...

But you do have a point, and that's why i still love this serie with aaaall my heart! :)

I adored Smallville. Back when I was younger, it's all we had live action wise that was comic book related on tv. And it was good at times.

Season 3 is still better than anything the CW shows have cooked up. You wouldn't have any of the CW shows without Smallville anyway.

I wish they would bring Smallville back so we can see the Superman show we all deserve! Call it Metropolis!

Shut up Tom. Lex and Lionel Luthor (and Erica Durance in bikini) were the only reasons to watch Smallville anyway.

They had an iconic moment in Clarks life when he rushed to the roof, and became Superman, so what if we didn't SEE the costume. I am not going to bash a long running and beloved series just because they stuck to the "no tights" part of their initial imperative of "no flights, no tights".

And I still say the show was less about Clark becoming Superman and more about the corruption of Lex to become the super villain we all knew he would be. But he didn't start that way, and gradually became more and more evil as the show progressed. Until the point where he professed "I am the villain of the story".

@pclark - I liked most of what they did with Lex, but then they made the baffling decision to undermine that by giving him amnesia in the finale.

@BIGBMH - The weird part of that for me was they had set up Lex as a character in such a way that it made complete sense that him knowing Clark's secret wouldn't really be all that dangerous. This wasn't a Lex that would kidnap his mother.
