SUPERMAN: LEGACY - Here's The Latest On Superman Casting And Whether Warner Bros. Will Have Any Input

Screen tests for Superman: Legacy took place over the weekend, and we now have additional details on where things stand and whether DC Studios will need any sort of approval from Warner Bros. executives.

There's a huge amount of excitement to see who DC Studios will cast as Superman: Legacy's Clark Kent and Lois Lane, with Nicholas Hoult, David Corenswet, Tom Brittney, Emma Mackey, Phoebe Dynevor, and Rachel Brosnahan all said to be in the mix.

Screen tests took place over the weekend, and the hope now is that we'll get some news at Comic-Con in San Diego next month.

According to Deadline's Justin Kroll, despite DC Studios supposedly being independent of Warner Bros., studio executives will need to weigh in before any decisions are made about who is going to lead this highly anticipated reboot.

With the DCU hinging on the success of Superman: Legacy, that's not overly surprising.

Kroll would later add that James Gunn and Peter Safran will likely want such input, a point the former seemed to corroborate when he responded to a fan on social media. This sort of oversight was to be expected and, based on the timeline predicted below, we may get a casting announcement in July at some point.

It's obviously hard to say for sure, though, especially when deals will need to be signed that are expected to keep these actors tied to the DCU for a decade or more!

"Superman: Legacy tells the story of Superman's journey to reconcile his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing as Clark Kent of Smallville, Kansas," reads the movie's synopsis. "He is the embodiment of truth, justice and the American way, guided by human kindness in a world that sees kindness as old-fashioned."

Superman: Legacy is set to be released in theaters on July 11. 2025.

James Gunn refuses report that WB execs must weigh in on Superman casting.

It’s getting to the point where they could make this shit up and knows it sounds plausible.

That being said, never understood why Gunn said he would not have to worry about studio interference. No way that can happen

Steel86 - 6/21/2023, 9:54 AM
@GhostDog - In fairness there is a difference between interference and collaboration. Not sure if you watch his Inside of You interview with Michael Rosenbaum but Gunn said he is big on collaboration. He's not a guy like say a James Cameron that wants everything his way or the highway.
GhostDog
GhostDog - 6/21/2023, 10:19 AM
@Steel86 - Yea I tuned into it a bit. I just always distrust studio heads as I think the lines between collaboration and interference can get blurred with them; especially the big studio heads. Not anyone like an A24.

Steel86 - 6/21/2023, 10:27 AM
@GhostDog - I get it. Just hoping they hired Gunn and his partner to do a job and they let them do it. Eventhough they're hit or miss they let Nolan and Matt do their jobs so hopefully they give them the same trust.

@JFerguson - belittling isn't appropriate. But also, that's not necessrily what I call arguing and I think it may be an assumption of the intentions of the person.

There is a difference between WB having opinions and having power.
FireandBlood
FireandBlood - 6/21/2023, 9:12 AM
@ObserverIO - Gunn has opinions, WB has power. That’s always been the case. Gunn’s in the same position Snyder was 10 years ago. People forget that he did map out a shared universe for WB, and had a 3 part Justice League trilogy planned. WB scrapped all that after Batman v Superman, and they’ll do the same with Gunn’s plans when Superman: Legacy doesn’t make bank.
Odin
Odin - 6/21/2023, 9:37 AM
@PlusUltra - In retrospect, did the WB make the right decision when scrapping Snyder's vision? If you know Snyder's plan, his universe was always meant to be a limited, interim movie universe. Justice League 3 was going to be the ending chapter, with character's stories coming to conclusions. It wasn't like the MCU, that apparently tries to go on forever, Snyder had designed a way out. After that, WB could've just rebooted, as they are doing. It's been ten years, it'd be probably wrapping up at this point. Looking at the mess DCEU has been the past ten years, would've Snyder's vision really been worse? For what I've learned about Snyder's plans for JL 2 and 3, they were very much Zack Snyder movies, yes. But they also honestly sound like a much better movie than WW84, Shazam 2, Birds of Prey or Black Adam. Would it have really been worse, if instead of those movies, we would've gotten Justice League 2&3 and Batfelck solo movie? And if the audience reaction to those had been negative, we would now be in the same position as we are now anyway. Reigns being handed to someone else to reboot the show. I'm not a Snyder fanboy, I don't hold any delusions about restoring the Snyderverse (at this point it would be an absurd way to go). But looking at ZSJL, I think the past ten years would've been better spend getting those previously mentioned three movies (WW, Aquaman, and Flash movies also still existing in some form) instead of all the aimless films we did get. At least IMO.
Your thoughts?
hazapez
hazapez - 6/21/2023, 9:38 AM
@PlusUltra - there you go, wb doomed the snyderverse, not the snyder
FireandBlood
FireandBlood - 6/21/2023, 10:02 AM
@Odin - I’m of the opinion that if they weren’t willing to reboot after Batman v Superman’s shortcomings, they should’ve just let Snyder see it through. They were doubling down on his characters either way, so at least whatever Snyder gave us would’ve been consistent with his vision. For better or worse, I’d have preferred that over the mess we got.
ObserverIO
ObserverIO - 6/21/2023, 12:54 PM
@Odin - I would say that then they would have been stuck with a bunch of successively worse flops, but they got that anyway just by keeping the universe, so maybe you're right. At least the Cult would be happy and that's better than absolutely nobody being happy.
Odin
Odin - 6/21/2023, 1:17 PM
@ObserverIO - Yeah, and here's the thing. In this alternative scenario, there wouldn't be a cult. Fan base wouldn't be so polarized. I know Snyder has been enjoying the following his work has gained, but he didn't create the cult. WB did, when they pulled a major bait-and-switch on people, who were actually interested in Snyder's DCEU. And without the cult, much of the other side of the fan base wouldn't have turned so aggressively against everything Snyder related. People might be more open-minded to discussion about DC movies over all. I'm not saying the movies would be necessarily anymore loved than they are now, or anything. But in a more neutral atmosphere, the movies could've also sparked more general interest in the vision they were trying to present. I then doubt that movies like Justice League 2, with a huge cliffhanger, or a big saga ending film like Justice League 3 would've ever been flops.
But this is just me speculating. I could be dead wrong. We'll never know.
ObserverIO
ObserverIO - 6/21/2023, 1:37 PM
@Odin - Without the use of time travel, we'll never really know.
If I learned anything from the Flash movie it's that some things were always meant to die and if they don't everything else does instead. Or something.

On second thoughts, I don't think I learned anything from watching the Flash movie.
