SUPERMAN: LEGACY Screen Tests Took Place This Weekend; New Rumors About Movie's Supporting Cast Revealed

In the midst of The Flash's disastrous opening weekend, screen tests for Superman: Legacy were taking place on Warner Bros.' Burbank lot. We also have rumours to share about the possible supporting cast.

The Flash dominated headlines this weekend...for all the wrong reasons. However, if you're wondering why DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn has been a little quiet on social media about what he described as perhaps "the greatest superhero movie ever," the filmmaker has been busy working on Superman: Legacy.

According to The Hollywood Reporter's Borys Kit, screen tests took place on Saturday with Nicholas Hoult, David Corenswet and Tom Brittney all trying out for the role of Superman alongside Emma Mackey, Phoebe Dynevor, and Rachel Brosnahan, all of whom are trying out for Lois Lane.

It's said they were in full wardrobe and makeup, so chances are Hoult, Corenswet, and Brittney were all decked out in one of the old Superman costumes to wear so they could play off each Lois as Clark Kent and the Man of Tomorrow.

The moderators over at r/DCEULeaks have also shared some supposedly verified intel which claims Gunn also has a list of names for Lex Luthor, Hawksmoor, the Engineer, Eve, and the Doctor. The Authority will clearly play a big role in Superman: Legacy, an intriguing decision on the filmmaker's part.

The actors hoping to play Lex will also be testing in the weeks ahead, while Gunn is said to be searching for a young redheaded actor to play the DCU's Jimmy Olsen.

An unverified source, meanwhile, claims a comic-accurate Mister Terrific will be part of the movie, as will Eve Teschmacher. Manchester Black and Jenny Sparks are expected to appear, though Midnighter, Apollo, and Grifter are no longer going to be part of the reboot following past claims.

"Superman: Legacy tells the story of Superman's journey to reconcile his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing as Clark Kent of Smallville, Kansas," reads the movie's synopsis. "He is the embodiment of truth, justice and the American way, guided by human kindness in a world that sees kindness as old-fashioned."

Superman: Legacy is set to be released in theaters on July 11. 2025.

Popular opinion seems to be Corenswet for Clark.
Hoult for Luthor.

I would be pretty happy about that.

@vectorsigma - I don't much either, But because of the rumors, Have been watching some interviews.
Need to check him out in something. But Yes, Hoult would be a great Luthor.
Even as a Clark, I have never been outright against him. But Luthor... YES, easily.

@vectorsigma - I guess Gunn isn't using Twitter right now,
But he tweeted this on some equivalent called Blue Sky.

@TempleRod - Rosenbaum on his podcast point blank said one of the three guys being listed as having tested for Superman was pure bs and said actor wasn't testing for the role of Superman and said he'll leave it at that.I took that to mean Hoult because he looks NOTHING like Superman/Clark Kent at all!

@jst5 - Hoult actually looks alot like Superman from Superman: Earth One.

@CoHost - No, you GOT TO jump in now.

I'm one that loved The Flash. One of my favorite comic book movies in a long time. And yes Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3 is included as is The Batman.

But I can't argue that this release hasn't been messy and for whatever reasons, Which I am tired of going over on this forum, very ill received.

And you cannot let that sit as a Takeaway. We need news on the real future of DC and Superman: Legacy is going to be the decider there. As it should be. Gunn's own project.
One Man, One Mouth. He needs to start calling shots and putting news out there. He knows this.
And we are going to see a ramping up this next few months.

@SimplyAz - I can't lie, at times Zack has great vision when it comes to casting 🤣

Looking at these photos I would have never pictured Cavill as Superman

@DaScarletClunge -

😂It was a hard suit to pull of considering it was made for Reeves who's a lot taller. Definitely think he looks good in the first two pics.

Here's what Zack said about Cavill trying it on:

"When you see the suit on the ground, it's kind of shriveled up, it's just spandex, it looks like, 'Oh God, that's not going to be cool.' Henry put it on in this trailer. And there's a version of this where he comes out and is like, 'I'm Superman!' and you're like, 'Okay, it's Halloween.' But Henry came out and even the crusty grips we hired for the test got quiet. Everybody was heart-attack serious. He had just the right energy. We were like, 'Oh, he's Superman. That's what Superman looks like.'"

I'm worried bout the new Superman movie ...and the new DC movies in general if I'm honest. DC movies just don't pull the crowds anymore. They're not making any money. Hopefully Gunn can blow everyone away with his take on Supes. Fingers 🤞 !
Steel86
Steel86 - 6/19/2023, 10:42 AM
@emeraldtaurus - Starts with one film at a time. Batman has been an consistent draw. A good Superman film will go along way to rebuilding DCU. Can't rush it.

ObserverIO

Jenny Sparks?!?!? Unless this is set in the 20th Century, Jenny Sparks should be dead.

I know they made her 120 years old in the reboot but that's dumb too. It's just another example of how stunted comics continuity is and it's disturbing on a psychological level. Nobody stays dead. Legacy is merely a recruitment drive. Continuity always softboots.

Comics writers have a hard time letting go.
(I think I saw a cbm about letting go recently, but I may have repressed it).
IronDean2099
IronDean2099 - 6/19/2023, 8:03 AM
@ObserverIO - They could make Jenny Sparks the spirit of the 21st century and have her be 25. That's a bit younger than I envision her but it's not a dealbreaker if they get an actress with the right energy.
ObserverIO
ObserverIO - 6/19/2023, 8:15 AM
@IronDean2099 - Yeah, they could be doing that, but why not just call her Jenny Quantum.

Maybe Jenny Sparks and The Authority feature in a flashback and the new spirit of the 21st Century is actually Superman. I don't know if Superman is still supposed to be 25 though since all of these actors are in their 30s and shooting hasn't even begun yet.
IronDean2099
IronDean2099 - 6/19/2023, 9:40 AM
@ObserverIO - to be fair they might just skip the whole spirit of the century bit and just make her a badass with lightning powers.
ObserverIO
ObserverIO - 6/19/2023, 10:36 AM
@IronDean2099 - That is probably the case. This is Hollywood after all, even if James Gunn is at the helm.

Also, it's DC, so I fully expect them all to just be random badasses with random powers. Where do these powers come from, are they Kryptonians too? They probably won't ever explain (let alone show) any of their origins at all.

They'll just expect audiences to accept it, like they did with Justice League, Suicide Squad and Black Adam.
IronDean2099
IronDean2099 - 6/19/2023, 3:57 PM
@ObserverIO - yeah some of that Authority stuff gets really wild and it's not much of a stretch to just have someone with lightning powers. The character I'm most excited to see though, is Jack Hawksmoor. That's something we've never seen anything like before.
