SUPERMAN: LEGACY Will Introduce Members Of The AUTHORITY!

Some pretty big news for a Friday evening here, as THR is reporting that members of the super-group known as The Authority will make their big-screen debut in Superman: Legacy...

DC Studios co-heads James Gunn and Peter Safran announced an Authority movie as part of Chapter 1 of the new DCU slate, "Gods and Monsters," and it seems we'll be meeting at least some members of the team a little sooner than expected.

THR has confirmed yesterday's report that Gunn will soon begin screen-testing actors for the roles of Clark Kent and Lois Lane in Superman: Legacy, while revealing that "roles such as Lex Luthor and members of supergroup The Authority, which are to be introduced in the movie, will be cast after."

This is pretty big news to be shared in such a throwaway manner, so we're curious if it's something the trade was under the impression had already been announced?

We have no idea how these characters will factor into the story, but given the morally grey nature of the group, there's a very good chance they'll start out as antagonists to the Man of Steel.

The original line-up consisted of: Jenny Sparks, Jack Hawksmoor, Swift, Apollo, Midnighter, The Engineer, and The Doctor, so it'll be interesting to see who shows up in the Superman reboot.

It's looking like our new Supes will be either Nicholas Hoult, David Corenswet or Tom Brittney, while Emma Mackey, Rachel Brosnahan and Phoebe Dynevor are said to be in the running for Lois.

Gunn reportedly turned in the first draft of his script before the writers' strike, but that doesn't mean the production won't be impacted going forward.

“Superman: Legacy is the true foundation of our creative vision for the DC Universe. Not only is Superman an iconic part of DC lore, he is also a favorite character for comic book readers, viewers of earlier movies, and fans around the world," said Gunn during the DCU slate announcement. "I can’t wait to introduce our version of Superman who audiences will be able to follow and get to know across films, movies, animation and gaming.”

Superman: Legacy is set to hit theaters in 2025.

Who's to say this will or won't work, but it'd be great to just get a Superman movie without having to insert other characters. Looking forward to seeing how this turns out!

@VicSage - The Question needs to be introduced in Gunn's rebooted DCU.

Are these guys supposed to be a parody of something else like the squadron Supreme?

@MCUKnight11 - kind of with some members

Like Midnighter and Apollo are gay Batman and Superman

Like half are a dark take on justice league members

The other half are the direct inspiration for The Elite. Manchester Black being based on Jenny Sparks

And they kill

@dracula - So they're more similar to X-force then.

@dracula - aka maybe the characters Snyder thought he was writing for , besides the Apollo midnighter relationship

So they’re not even waiting for the second movie to set up a cinematic universe like last time. They’re just going to cram it all in the first one.

I get the sneaking suspicion The Authority is the project Gunn really wants to make, but has to get Superman ‘out the way’ first.

@PlusUltra - rumor is matthew vaughn’s doing the authority, who has a lot of similar sensibilities as him

@PlusUltra - He confessed months ago that he was actually developing BTS a Superman film way before he signed up with Safran to handle everything, meaning that Superman: Legacy was that mysterious project he was developing after Peacemaker for WB so IDK if The Authority really was in his schedule. Unless he was really not showing all of his cards and the overall idea down the road was to also get to The Authority film one way or the other first after he did their Superman film. Whether he was the new DC boss or not.

@tmp3 - instead of Mathew Vaughn can you imagine if Quentin Tarantino did The Authority? 🤯!

@WruceBayne - Gunn can't even get Ben Affleck to direct a DCU movie, no way he's gonna be able to convince tarantino 😭

@dracula - Yeah, we're gonna get to it, just lower on the priority list than some other stuff (like Succession, currently.) And now AEW's adding another two hours of TV? In this economy?!
CoHost
CoHost - 6/9/2023, 6:04 PM
@ClintThaHamster - Succession is so damn good. Jeremy Strong is so damn reprehensible in it but he's acting on Daniel Day-Lewis' level.

I know nothing of The Authority but my preference would be no non-Superman adjacent characters in this besides potentially a post credit scene.

Rather a true Superman solo but let’s see what they can do. Also weird cause these heroes are DC but not DC really.

Never got into The Authority, so this news doesn’t move the needle that much for me, but I’m still excited to finally have a Superman movie in development again

@tmp3 - me too and from what I hear they are suppose to be pretty violently dark yes? I thought we were getting a light hearted Superman movie.
