The Heroes in a Half-Shell will return to the big screen for a new animated adventure in 2026!

Paramount Pictures' recent animated Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie, Mutant Mayhem, wasn't exactly a massive box office hit, but it did well enough to warrant a follow-up, and the studio has now announced a release date for the planned sequel.

Unveiled as part of the studio's updated slate, TMNT: Mutant Mayhem 2 is set to hit theaters on October 9, 2026. Director Jeff Rowe is expected to return, and it's assumed that the voice actors for the four Turtles and April O'Neil – Micah Abbey, Shamon Brown Jr., Nicolas Cantu, Brady Noon and Ayo Edebiri - will also reprise their respective roles.

Plot details are still under wraps, but Rowe has already confirmed that the Shredder will make his presence felt in the movie after a brief appearance at the end of the last movie.

In the post-credits scene, Cynthia Utrom decides to call in Shredder's services to help her take down the Turtles, and we get a quick glimpse of his signature purple cape and spiked armor as he looks over the New York skyline.

While chatting to Collideri in a recent interview, Rowe was asked if he plans to take a fresh approach to the Turtles' most recognizable foe in his follow-up.

“That is exactly what I am trying to figure out and what my next meeting will be about. That is what we are in the thick of now. Shredder is just a great character. He’s an iconic, classic, loved character. He’s like the Joker. You know who he is, even if you’re not a fan of the source material. I think we definitely wanna do a villain-forward film. We’re currently trying to make decisions about that, but those decisions for us as filmmakers are always going to come from the place of what tells the best story, specifically about our main characters, the Turtles.”

“After years of being sheltered from the human world, the Turtle brothers set out to win the hearts of New Yorkers and be accepted as normal teenagers through heroic acts. Their new friend April O’Neil helps them take on a mysterious crime syndicate, but they soon get in over their heads when an army of mutants is unleashed upon them.”

Micah Abbey, Shamon Brown Jr., Nicolas Cantu and Brady Noon will voice the roles of Donatello, Michelangelo, Leonardo and Raphael, respectively. The cast also includes Jackie Chan as Splinter, Hannibal Buress as Genghis Frog, Rose Byrne as Leatherhead, Ice Cube as Superfly, Natasia Demetriou as Wingnut, Ayo Edebiri as April O’Neil, Giancarlo Esposito as Baxter Stockman, Post Malone as Ray Fillet, Paul Rudd as Mondo Gecko, and Maya Rudolph as Cynthia Utrom.

Jeff Rowe (The Mitchells vs. the Machines) directed Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem, which is produced by Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg.

@dracula - Jennika? I could actually see her be included if the movie focuses on Shredder and The Foot Clan

@dracula - I was super skeptical of the 2012 series at first. But it turned out to be my favorite tv iteration of the characters.

@dracula - That's a seriously good show. You don't think it's going to be, but it's surprisingly good TV. Every season gets better and better until they reach peak perfection with season 5 and then stop.

I love the 2003 show but this one edges it out by inches.

@dracula - Agree 100% with your first three points.

The first one takes on a lot of depth (especially with the tale of two fathers) for such a simple story.

@dracula - Batman vs TMNT was really really good FYI. I agree with your assessment of the other movies.

Just saw this flick for the first time last night. Definitely had a lot of laughs and fun moments. Ice Cube was too sweet as Superfly! lol However, why in the heck did they do the rest of the villains like that?!

Sweet!!.

While it wasn’t my favorite iteration of the characters so far , I did still like the first one so i’m looking forward to this sequel aswell as the upcoming show also.

Interested to see their take on Shredder since this version wouldn’t have the Splinter connection it seems since he was just a regular rat beforehand.

It was implied that he would be a mercenary type with possibly the Foot Clan being his own private army which i could see happening

Gonna Kick It with the upcoming Tales of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles until then, I'm definitely intrigued with how they'll handle The Shredder since once again he has no connection with Splinter, but all in good time! 🐢

When I think of a "villain-forward" film what comes to my mind are The Dark Knight with Joker and Avengers: Infinity War with Thanos. Not sure if the same could be applied with Shreder. But if they can find the way to make it work, go for it.

I liked the 1st film so I hope they rise up the ante.

I thought it was passable, but that animation was hideous. And some of the artistic choices were poor. For the sake of comedy they made everything noble about Splinter and flushed it down the toilet. And the mystique of the characters are gone now that they’re integrating in the everyday world.

I’m just waiting for the spiritual successor of the first movie. Someday we’ll get that. Someone with a love for story will make it happen. I’m patiently optimistic this morning.

@JustAWaffle - Last Ronin as a direct sequel to the 1990 movie. Bring back Judith Hoag as older April.

And Elias Koteas as Casey Jones in flashbacks too, of course. Luke Skywalker him.

@ObserverIO - I like the idea, but what the HELL is up with that face in the first panel? It reminds me of the Randowis memes/comics. https://tapas.io/episode/1549807

@JustAWaffle - lol, that's pretty accurate. She kinda looks like that a lot in Last Ronin. I guess they're trying to give her face more lines to show how old she's got.

The actual actress from the OG movie looks way better and she's probably aged as much. Yet she still looking fine as hell, tbh.

JustAWaffle - 3/5/2024, 10:35 AM
@ObserverIO - She was by far the best live action April.

As a kid I liked Turtles 2 better (including April), but as an adult the first has always been far superior.

The movie itself was fun, but the characters and the animation definitely made it a good watch. Think the style fits TMNT really well.

Also, why don't they ever release TMNT movies in April?

I'd rather see these sort of films as long as they can balance the tone well without coming across as gratuitous.
