A more family-friendly take on the TMNT is on the way to theaters in Seth Rogen's Mutant Mayhem animated movie, but those who prefer a slightly grittier interpretation of these iconic crime-fighters should be very happy with this news.

A new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles AAA video game based on IDW's best-selling The Last Ronin comic series is in the works, according to Polygon.com.

It sounds like the project is only in the very early stages (a developer has yet to be announced), but the game is expected to be significantly darker and more adult-oriented than any previous TMNT titles.

Doug Rosen, senior vice president for games and emerging media at Paramount Global, likened the upcoming third-person action role-playing game to Sony’s recent God of War titles and said it will be "authentic to the story of The Last Ronin arc, which is set in a future where only one of the turtles has survived."

The Last Ronin is a The Dark Knight Returns-style story which imagines a future where one member of the Heroes in a Half-Shell is the last living Turtle, setting out to avenge the death of his brothers and Master Splinter by bringing down Shredder's grandson and the authoritarian descendants of the Foot Clan.

Spoiler alert:

The first issue concludes with the big reveal that it's actually Michaelangelo behind the black bandana!

A God of War-style action adventure game based on The Last Ronin could be something special, but it's probably best not to get too excited until we hear more (a lot of these games never see the light of day).

Details on this game are few and far between for now, but we'll be sure to update as more info becomes available.

I hope it looks like this masterpiece:

@THEDARKKNIGHT1939 - It woulda been a dope move if Rogan's TMNT was something like this. But instead it's the predictable attempt at grabbing the attention of and entertaining kids. Guess that's where the money is (although I'm not so sure that's true anymore).

@ObserverIO - Kids have been the primary audience for the Turtles since near their inception. I’m all down for having more mature stories in this world for the older fans, but I don’t think they should be the primary stories.

Similar to Andor in Star Wars. Andor is probably the best thing Star Wars has done since Empire and just an absolutely amazing show on its own, and part of the reason for that is because it was made for adults. But I don’t think all Star Wars should be for adults. You can’t lose that primary audience. Where do you think the adult fans come from?

@BloopBlorp2 - Earth maybe?

Wait, I get it. You were implying that the adults come from kids. Well where do you think the kids come from in the first place? From adults. It's a chicken and egg thing.
ObserverIO
ObserverIO - 3/24/2023, 2:40 PM
(of course the serious answer is that there were adult fans of the TMNT long before there were younger fans)
CassianAndor
CassianAndor - 3/24/2023, 3:17 PM
@ObserverIO - I mean, not really. Unless you consider 3 years a long time. I doubt many people are getting into TMNT as adults nowadays.
Blergh
Blergh - 3/24/2023, 3:24 PM
@ObserverIO - I get what you mean but we all became Turtles fans as kids thanks to the kids shows. So it's absolutely fair for the Rogan flick to aim for kids. Love that movie's style as well, looking very promising IMO.

If they ever want to go the adult route I'd think they'll go carefully low budget like that Casey Jones project with a physical Michaelangelo appearing in a cameo
ObserverIO
ObserverIO - 3/24/2023, 4:26 PM
@BloopBlorp2 - Those 3 years is exactly what I meant. I suppose it's not really a "long" time, that was an exaggeration.

@Blergh - I agree. A big budget adult TMNT would be a risk. Traditionally kids stuff is more popular. Although, these days all the successful stuff seems to be more adult in nature, so maybe traditional thinking is outmoded.

But yeah, there are a lot of adult fans of TMNT. Even the ones who watched the kids cartoon are now old AF. Even fans of the 2003 show are now old.
Of the two recent cartoons only the 2012 one was really successful. And a lot of fans of that were older fans who read the comics or grew up with the old cartoon (or both).

I would confidently speculate that the majority of TMNT fans right now are not children.

@ObserverIO - “ But yeah, there are a lot of adult fans of TMNT. Even the ones who watched the kids cartoon are now old AF. Even fans of the 2003 show are now old.”
Wow. It’s almost like that’s where the adult fans come from. 😛

“I would confidently speculate that the majority of TMNT fans right now are not children.”
For argument’s sake, let’s say that’s true. Wouldn’t that just be MORE of a reason to make a kid’s movie? If you want a franchise like this to stay strong you gotta hook ‘em while they’re young.
ObserverIO
ObserverIO - 3/24/2023, 5:04 PM
@BloopBlorp2 - Like drugs.

It is good to have TMNT cartoons aimed at a younger audience, because then you can watch them with your kids and then they become fans.

But where do those kids come from, lol? That's right, from their adult TMNT fan parents.

SanFranLand - 3/24/2023, 7:02 PM
@ObserverIO - Yeah. Screw it. Sorry kids. Seriously.
It’s always the adult, scary themes that have stuck with us for a reason that we appreciate later in life. Optimus dying. I don’t care, I don’t CARE! The comic was serious in tone, the first movie. Give us a tragic Ronin. No accentuated tech or gear that shows their personalities (if you know the storyline). No rapping. Lol. No over-animating. Like throwing extra movement in the mouth. Animators, tone it down! But yeah. Maybe the next iteration

Now these ARE the turtles I'm looking for.

Hope they get Judith Hoag back to voice April O'Neil. And Elias Koteas if they do flashbacks. A little Corey Feldman goes a long way too.

I'd nut my slacks if this actually happens.
CassianAndor
CassianAndor - 3/24/2023, 2:06 PM
@ObserverIO - The whole reason The Last Ronin is so interesting is because it’s so different and new from other TMNT stuff. I like all those guys, but I’d personally really rather them leave the nostalgia and member berries out of it.
ObserverIO
ObserverIO - 3/24/2023, 2:35 PM
@BloopBlorp2 - Why?
CassianAndor
CassianAndor - 3/24/2023, 2:43 PM
@ObserverIO - I feel like I explained it. It’s personal preference. Not really a dealbreaker.
ObserverIO
ObserverIO - 3/24/2023, 4:31 PM
@BloopBlorp2 - Would you prefer a Batman Beyond with or without Michael Keaton? Obviously I would prefer Keaton as old Bruce, just as I would prefer Hoag as April in a Last Ronin.

But I just love dem member berries.
Just crush 'em up and juice 'em and I will drink that shit down all day long, I don't even care. I'll breath out my nose.
CassianAndor
CassianAndor - 3/24/2023, 4:55 PM
@ObserverIO - Clint Eastwood was always my choice for old Bruce in Batman Beyond. He’s probably toooo old now and I doubt he would’ve done a superhero movie anyway.

Keaton would be fine if it’s in that universe. I would also kinda want Burton back too if it’s Keaton.

ObserverIO
ObserverIO - 3/24/2023, 5:09 PM
@BloopBlorp2 - I think we're all gonna miss Burton when we see The Flash this summer.

Eastwood would have been so cool back when they were actually thinking of doing a Batman Beyond in the early 2000s. Shame that fell through. Paul Dini wrote the screenplay for that. Ah well.

Think this is a great set-up for a game. Just switching between weapons is gameplay-wise so much more interesting than constantly switching between characters imo.

Think it would be cool if it has flashbacks, and based on the choices you make in playing those flashbacks it changes who the remaining Turtle is.

Ever since that article about the canceled Casey Jones movie with a small appearance by a classic latex Michaelangello I'm obsessed with the idea how that movie happening.
