RUMOR MILL: THOR: LOVE AND THUNDER May Utilize The Same Technology As THE MANDALORIAN

Production on Thor: Love and Thunder is starting to ramp up in Australia, and a new rumor suggests that Taika Waititi's film will utilize the same "The Volume" technology used in The Mandalorian!

In "Rumor Mill," we share the hard to buy rumours that don't come from reliable sources like the trades, but are still more believable (just) than what you might find on Reddit. 

It's believed that production on Thor: Love and Thunder is starting to ramp up in Australia, with Natalie Portman and her family recently photographed relocating to the country. That's now been followed by a rumor which claims that the film's crew have started assembling down under to start prep work.

While a lot of assumptions are being made in this report, it appears a number of people with experience using "The Volume" technology from The Mandalorian are reporting for duty. 

Taika Waititi has experience using that groundbreaking technology after directing an episode of the Disney+ series, and the way it's used to convincingly create outdoor environments in a studio is perfect for any blockbuster in this era of filmmaking. Marvel Studios is owned by Disney, so it makes sense that they would be able to use Lucasfilm's tech.

Thor: Love and Thunder isn't likely to begin shooting quite yet, but if this rumor is accurate, we could see the Marvel Cinematic Universe brought to life in a unique new way as Kevin Feige tries to combat the pandemic and make sure the studio is able to continue telling stories in this crazy new world.

Excellent technology,no more travelling around the world when you can build the world on a giant screen in a studio.

I hope female Thor is one and done because I can't stand Portman as Jane Foster, she is a good actress but not in the Thor or Star Wars movies.

@marvel72 - I want Jane in the new Avengers (whatever that ends up looking like). It's not Portman's fault she got saddled with the most transparently disposable "super-girlfriend" role of Phase 1.

Jane Foster has never had the sticking power of a Lois Lane or Mary Jane. She only even seemed interesting in the comics to me when she was Thor's ex-girlfriend (and kind of over the magic shit). And then Jason Aaron's revamp was such an incredible boost to the character. It's worth giving Portman some room to run, I think.

Of course, there's also a part of me that wants to see them go full "No Sad Songs for Me" and have her succumb to the cancer. Basically the Mar-Vell of the MCU.



But I've got to be honest, the prospect feels very different now that Boseman genuinely went through that.

It's got to be a great boon to a production to be able to do a scene in one location, then press a few keys and suddenly be in a new location. If you're iffy on where you want a scene to take place, but also don't want to shoot entirely on green screen, you can do the scene multiple times in quick succession...



And even have nuances of the performance change to suit different iterations of the script.

I watched Mandalorian not knowing anything about the 𝙏𝙝𝙚 𝙑𝙤𝙡𝙪𝙢𝙚™ and never caught on to how they were doing their location shoots. And that was still early days for the technology.

Yes, Covid makes this stuff more attractive for productions (and maybe less glamorous), but the potential for the technology is staggering. The next step would probably be interactive AR elements in the camera (and with crew wearing AR goggles to control and frame them).

You could literally have a puppeteer with something as simple as an XBOX controller interacting with a performer in an organic and natural way.

@Spock0Clock - and those locations mapped out on the LED screens look better than a lot of the CGI green screened backgrounds.

Just imagining those screens enhancing the African landscape backgrounds for BP 2. Those background shots of Warrior Falls looked a little wonky at times. They could project a live image of the actual Iguazu Falls for example

@Spock0Clock - they do actually do something similar to that. they go INTO the virtual set with VR to set up shots, move landscapes around etc. its pretty cutting edge stuff.

@Goldboink - pretty well made really, I expected my rewatch to be way more “how did I watch this?” Not “man... that was better than most b horror movies, and witty to boot, bad acting human protagonists notwithstanding.

The Mandalorian used those LED screens beautifully. I had no idea. This is the future.

Props to Oblivion for sort of being a pioneer of sorts. Not the same technology (projection mapping in this case), but a similar concept

@Origame - the nba bubble is doing both inside and outside and they haven’t had a case in months. The cast and crew has to not expose themselves outside of the sets and they will be fine
