Taika Waititi Will Direct A Secret Project For Fox Searchlight Before THOR: LOVE AND THUNDER

Before he returns to the Marvel Cinematic Universe for Thor: Love and Thunder, Taika Waititi will helm a secret project for Fox Searchlight which also has Venom 2 director Andy Serkis on board as producer.

No, Thor: Love and Thunder has not been delayed - but director Taika Waititi will be stepping behind the camera to helm a smaller project for Fox Searchlight before committing to the mammoth Marvel Studios movie.

According to Variety, Waititi will write and direct the mysterious film, which also has Garrett Basch, Jonathan Cavendish and Venom 2 director Andy Serkis on board to produce through their Imaginarium banner.

Plot details are being kept tightly under wraps (there's not so much as a hint in the trade's report), but if the Jojo Rabbit director is involved you can bet it's going to be something out of the ordinary!

We should have a bit more to go on pretty soon, because the project has reportedly already been greenlit and is expected to begin shooting this fall.

@regularmovieguy - It'd be a shame if Lucy in the Sky - the new Natalie Portman astronaut film from Noah Hawley - went straight to, like, Hulu or Disney+, but it looks like that might end up being the case at this point

@tmp3 - Why is it a shame, exactly? The global theater industry is a big complicated business that needs asses in seats. If smaller-scale niche films don't get those asses in those seats, but there is a mechanism to produce those same films for streaming platforms (and to the audience that wants to see them), then what's the big deal? In many cases in urban areas, you may still get limited theatrical runs anyway.

Coke didn't die because it stopped coming in glass bottles.

@Spock0Clock - It's a shame because it means less diversity in the kinds of films that go to cinemas, and Hollywood is already dominated by shitty, wannabe-blockbusters out every other weekend. Also, Fox Searchlight isn't exactly doing poorly - most of their movies break-even, at the very least, and get critical acclaim; on top of being big Oscar players. To put them on the back-burner and strip it to pieces to save screen space for the Hunchback remake or whatever is a shame. There are already so few distributers releasing the kind of films that Searchlight does; the only other I can think of is Sony Pictures Classics.

I like all kinds of movies. Love seeing movies at the theater - girlfriend and I do it almost every Friday.

And Fox Searchlight makes damn good movies and it’s not like their movies are flopping left and right either. They do pretty well for themselves.

Pulling them because they don’t bring in Star Wars or Avengers money would be really shitty for the industry (and my date nights, getting harder and harder to convince the gf to see CBMs).

@tmp3 - Again, "break-even" isn't the goal here. And it might be nice for a studio to turn a 4 million dollar budget to 10 million, but theaters don't scale like that. They've got 200 seats and the same rent to pay whether it's an Avengers movie or a two hour high-concept post-ironic treatise on the nature of loneliness.

I don't think this obsession with maintaining an old system where theatrical release has some kind of prestige quality (and paves the way for "Oscars and acclaim") is healthy. TV, streaming, web series, whatever the format, if good material is being made and being made available to you, then there are FAR bigger concerns to have.

I'm just saying drive-in theaters were a thing until they weren't (mostly). Some people are lucky enough to live in communities with a robust and interesting theater scene that cater to a wide variety of tastes and can support themselves doing it.

But I can only speak to my own context, where it's a two hour drive to sit in a screening room that's about ten degrees too warm and uncomfortable seats that haven't been refurbished in twenty years. I basically only bother doing it for the few movies that I really want to see at release so Josh doesn't spoil them completely before I get a chance. Getting a good intriguing film delivered right to my TV or computer screen is a [frick]ing blessing for me. And if that's the direction the market is going, then it is what it is.

@regularmovieguy - Haha, excellent. I get that my experience and yours are different (and in a perfect world there'd be room for both weekly movie night for Mr. and Ms. RegularMovieGuy and I'd be able to stream Marvel movies to my house on release day).
