THOR: LOVE AND THUNDER - Chris Hemsworth Told Christian Bale He Was Taking Things "A Little Too Far" As Gorr

Christian Bale has previously talked about shooting scenes he knew wouldn't make it into Thor: Love and Thunder, and the actor has now revealed that Chris Hemsworth told him to dial it back a little.

Though most fans would agree that Gorr the God Butcher wasn't given enough screen-time in Thor: Love and Thunder, Christian Bale certainly made the most of his scenes, delivering a creepy, unhinged take on the fan-favorite Marvel Comics villain.

Some might argue that Bale's intense performance was at odds with the light-hearted (goofy?) movie unfolding around him, and it sounds like The God Butcher could have been an even more abrasive presence in the MCU sequel.

While speaking to Inverse, Bale revealed that he shot some "R-rated" sequences he knew would never actually make it into the final film.

"With Thor: Love and Thunder, Taika and me, we kind of knew that some of the stuff we were doing probably wouldn't end up in the film, but we wanted to just push it and see. Ultimately, it is and should be a film that all the family can go and enjoy."

He continued: "And Chris Hemsworth, a couple of times he looked at me it was like, 'Dude, that's a little too far. I don't think anyone's gonna want to see that unless it's an R-rated film'. But it was a great joy to give it a shot. And we had a lot of fun in there doing certain scenes and takes on certain scene choices, even if they didn't end up in the final cut."

Unfortunately, Bale doesn't elaborate, so we have no idea what prompted that reaction from his co-star. We assume he dropped an F-bomb or two, but it may simply have been a case of improvising some sinister/disturbing dialogue that was deemed to be too strong for a family film.

Will these scenes ever see the light of day? We know a lot of other stuff ended up on the cutting room floor, but director Taika Waititi has already made it clear that he has no intention of releasing it.

Thor: Love and Thunder finds Thor (Chris Hemsworth) on a journey unlike anything he’s ever faced – a quest for inner peace. But his retirement is interrupted by a galactic killer known as Gorr the God Butcher (Christian Bale), who seeks the extinction of the gods. To combat the threat, Thor enlists the help of King Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson), Korg (Taika Waititi) and ex-girlfriend Jane Foster (Natalie Portman), who – to Thor’s surprise – inexplicably wields his magical hammer, Mjolnir, as the Mighty Thor.

Together, they embark upon a harrowing cosmic adventure to uncover the mystery of the God Butcher’s vengeance and stop him before it’s too late.

Directed by Waititi (Thor: Ragnarok, Jojo Rabbit) and produced by Kevin Feige and Brad Winderbaum, Thor: Love and Thunder  is now streaming on Disney+.

I had fun watching this movie though i've had no desire to see it again and upon reflection it feels like a massive waste of potential.

Ragnarok was brilliant so i'm torn but i'm not really hyped about another Taika Thor movie unless he can reign it in.
I'm not sure he would want to return though if he was given any specific instructions to calm it down and it would be interesting to see Hemsworths motivation for it under a new director

@JakeyChappers - I feel same with Thor love and thunder but did Thor love and thunder have same amount of comedy as Thor ragnorock did no it had less Thor three had it from start to finish start to end

@JakeyChappers - Ragnorak was brilliant? What movie were you guys watching? Such low bar for film with MCU Stans

@TheVengeance - Ragnarok is pretty great imo and easy top 5 of MCU. And that’s not a hot take. It’s a very well regarded movie for most MCU fans and the general audience lol

@TheVengeance - Ragnarok was great IMO. The best Thor movie (although his best appearance was in Infinity War).

I think a good serious Thor movie could exist, but the first two movies were huge misses. The Flash Gordon tone of Ragnarok mostly worked. Hela as a villain worked. Hulk's inclusion worked. It did get a bit goofy at times, but nowhere near as goofy as Love and Thunder.

@JakeyChappers - Ragnarok's villain felt like a disconnected B-story, but overall definitely better

@mountainman - "I think a good serious Thor movie could exist, but the first two movies were huge misses. "

So a good serious Thor movie could exist, except the two good serious ones don't count. Gotcha.

@Razorface1 - They weren’t good. First one was decent and 2nd one was bottom tier MCU. They were more serious though. The Thor series should be the MCU’s Lord of the Rings.

@mountainman - Thor was the best Thor movie

@MrDandy - top 5 of the MCU? Hell no. Not even close

Iron Man
Incredible Hulk
Thor
Cap First Avenger
Avengers
Cap Winter Soldier
Civil War
Antman
GOTG
Black Panther
Homecoming
Infinity War
Endgame
Far From Home
No Way Home

All far superior comic book movies in the MCU catalog. Ragnorak is just slightly less of a joke by comparison to Love and Thunder. Same goofy ass tone

@TheVengeance - That’s certainly an opinion. 👍

@mountainman - yes I like comedy as tension deflation. But not at in opportune times. I don’t like comic book movies where they’re not aiming to be taken seriously with real compelling story, character in drama and instead are just really piss poor SNL skits

@TheVengeance - I think you and I would agree for the most part. I prefer more serious than more comedy. I thought that the overall story and arc in ragnarok was mostly done well and I was able to mostly look past the goofy comedy in that one. I did find some of it dumb but I liked that the best of the first three movies. It’s all opinions here. I do think the MCU has gone way too far in the jokey direction now though.

I guess Chris Hemsworth never read the origin of Gorr in the comics and Christian Bale did.

@IMCOOLURNOT - more like bale wanted to make a good movie and Hemsworth just accepted he was in the screaming goat film.

@Origame - #ReleaseTheBaleCut.

I put Thor Love and Thunder on the other day and just watched his scenes. It was brilliant. A masterpiece.

But when you watch the film normally, it may be the worst MCU film ever.

mastakilla39 - 9/27/2022, 11:55 AM
@ObserverIO - Yeah you can tell Waititi didn't give a shit about making a "real marvel or thor movie". He just wanted to [frick] around and joke with his celebrity friends and thats what we got on screen. Seems like the serious Marvel elements like Gorr's parts and Jane's Cancer are what Waititi didn't want to do and so he just kept cutting it quick to his jokes and ridiculousness.
LiteraryJoe
LiteraryJoe - 9/27/2022, 12:07 PM
@ObserverIO -

So the God killer didn't kill Gods because it didn't fit the stupid tone? The only time Gorr "matched the tone" it was horrible.

Am I the only one that thought Bale was ridiculous when he was talking to the kids in the cage?

He sounded like he was trying to do a really bad impression. Or a really good impression of cringe.
ObserverIO
ObserverIO - 9/27/2022, 12:46 PM
@LiteraryJoe - I can see why you would say that, because of how he was scaring the kids like he was telling them a bedtime story. But I think what he was doing was intentionally playful, which is even more terrifying.
TheVengeance
TheVengeance - 9/27/2022, 2:00 PM
@LiteraryJoe - I get the intent of what he was doing in that scene, but yeah it didn’t fit the character as previously established. We didn’t get to see him purposefully and masterfully kill any gods to be named God Butcher and be frightened at the prospects of facing him. We saw one accidental kill to give him his powers and it wasn’t shown on screen the brutality of it. Waste of Bale. Waste of a compelling character.
LiteraryJoe
LiteraryJoe - 9/27/2022, 2:34 PM
@ObserverIO @TheVengeance - Yeah, a character motivated by the death of his child doesn't make sense to be scaring and torturing children. They aren't Gods who turn their back on people, and it completely ruins the story arc Gorr had, not that there was much to see.

Movie could've benefited from more Gorr. Especially with the juxtaposition between the heroes
Ojeet78

Bale hammed it up quite a bit. Maybe that's what Hemsworth was referring to. Totally agree that Bale's talents were wasted on this.
Origame

@Ojeet78 - but he specifically said bales performance would be something more appropriate for an r rated film.
Ojeet78
Ojeet78 - 9/27/2022, 10:03 AM
@Origame - Rated R for ridiculous. Jokes aside, I really wish this movie had some oversight. Everyone went a bit too far with their roles and the story. I liked the overall idea and would have loved to see more of gorr and Jane but the entire premise was a bit squandered.

TheWalkingCuban
TheWalkingCuban - 9/27/2022, 9:52 AM
@Asterisk - him and the shadow monsters not Attacking Olympus was a travesty of truly mind boggling proportions. Orgies and goats, but not one Hela type attack. He did so well with Ragnarok I just knew he’d take every opportunity to use Bale… nope. That black and white scene was fire tho
TheVengeance
TheVengeance - 9/27/2022, 10:00 AM
@TheWalkingCuban - Of course, he can make a super cartoonish and stupid kids movie that talks about orgies, given his orientation and political affiliations, but God forbid they feature Christian Bale’s terrifying performance as spotlight or actually have him kill make-believe gods to make him a more terrifying threat as the villain of the story. SJW’s … smh … libtards smh … but oh yea Korg has to be gay !!!!
ptick
ptick - 9/27/2022, 10:04 AM
@TheVengeance - Is Korg really "gay" when the inference is that all Kronans are male? Of course, in that respect, how the hell do Kronans have gender? Apparently only their faces are alive and if they are all the same and reproduce asexually, gender shouldn't even be a thing for them.
TheVengeance
TheVengeance - 9/27/2022, 10:08 AM
@ptick - it shouldn’t have any purpose in the movie anyway. The character itself is an annoying distraction just meant to feature more of annoying ass Taika
TheWalkingCuban
TheWalkingCuban - 9/27/2022, 10:41 AM
