THOR: LOVE AND THUNDER Director Explains Guardians' Minor Role And Why They Shot All Of Zeus' Scenes Twice

Thor: Love and Thunder director Taika Waititi has explained why the Guardians of the Galaxy played such a minor role in the movie and reveals that all of Russell Crowe's scenes had to be shot twice...

Thor: Love and Thunder proved to be something of a mixed bag, and while it opened to a mighty $143 million, all eyes are now on this coming weekend. After all, that will prove whether the apparent negative reaction from many fans is a vocal minority or if a lack of interest in repeat viewings and poor word of mouth will lead to a significant second-weekend drop.

There was certainly fun to be had with the Thor: Ragnarok sequel, though a common complaint is that the Guardians of the Galaxy had nowhere near enough screentime.

Most of the team had barely any dialogue, and with the recent reveal that key scenes involving The Grandmaster and Eitri left on the cutting room floor, could the Guardians once have had a bigger role? Talking to Insider, director Taika Waititi said, "The plan was always to have them in the beginning and then move on. Because they have their own movie."

"There was talk about having them come back at the end," he continued, adding, "The thing is, that happens in every movie. No more. No more of the cavalry coming at the end. So we shelved that idea. We just wanted Jane to come in at the end."

In the same interview, Waititi discussed Russell Crowe's Zeus, confirming that the character's accent was a big talking point while making Thor: Love and Thunder. Admitting that there was some concern about a Greek accent sounding too silly, the filmmaker revealed, "Russell was very much wanting it to be Greek. But I wasn't sure, so we ended up doing two versions of every take with Russell. One in a Greek accent and then another in a British accent. Because I felt people would think Zeus would sound British like Laurence Olivier in 'Clash of the Titans.'"

"I realized in post that it's actually more offensive to the Greeks to have Zeus sound like he's British. And test audiences loved the Greek accent. I'm really happy with it," Waititi added. "But, yeah, he had to do every take once in the Greek accent and once with a British accent because I couldn't make up my mind. But Russell was right all along."

Crowe did sound a little silly (like a weird cross between Borat and Super Mario), but Zeus was portrayed in a comedic light, so it mostly worked. A mid-credits scene teased big plans for the denizens of Ominipitence City, so we're sure we haven't seen the last of them. As for the Guardians, their story continues in The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.

Crowe holding his skirt while descending those stairs might have been the funniest moment of this movie for me.

I found the name, and idea of, ‘Omnipotence City’ so be more cartoonishly silly than the Dumpling joke. That should be okay because the whole movie is silly, that’s its tone… but that name struck me more as just kind of dumb. Is that really a thing in comics? Nobody strained any muscles comin up with that name did they…

Taika didn't realise that Greek God's speaking in British accents would be problematic? In 2022? Really? Pull your head out, mate.

The post credit scene is the best Zeus scene.

They shot all the Zeus scenes twice and then picked the most unfunny.

Crowe and Bale were the best things about the movie. Would've been better if we had more of them and less of the rest. And Marvel should try to find a better role for Bale. He was so great in such a weak movie. He really made Hemsworth look bad in their scenes together.

I think Russell Crowe was a great casting choice for Zeus but the accent and overall direction of the character was one of my least favourite things in the movie. The accent came across cartoonish and borderline offensive, and while I actually liked the fact that Zeus was portrayed as selfish and out of touch and mostly concerned with decadence and orgies (which is somewhat consistent with mythology) I wish he'd had more gravitas and even felt threatening or imposing. I'd have been fine with a Greek accent if it felt like they weren't taking the piss the whole time.

Spoilers: I also wish Thor had actually killed him, and I wonder if/hope that the post credit scene is setting up a potential fifth movie revolving around a battle between the Norse and Greek pantheons (or at least what's left of them)

I love going to the comment sections for Thor just to find people who share the same sentiment over this movie with me... garbage! Get Taika out of here and bring back Kenneth Branagh

sooooo predictable. i absolutely knew people would be bitching about how little the guardians are in the movie. it was obvious they wouldn't be in it long from the jump. i mean its a thor movie with two thors. plus like waihiti says they have their own movie coming and he cant develop them too much or you step on gunn's toes.

@supermanrex -The problem is that many people here defend that MARVEL has an impeccable continuity, but the reality is that MARVEL does not take care of its continuity, it simply justifies it in the next movie with one or two dialogues of mediocre exposition... How many movies go where the characters end in an interesting event (thor and guardians case) only to reverse it in the first 10 minutes of the next movie?

I leave a list of the ones I remember:
the lost eye of thor
winter solider in wakanda
ironman retiring
the bleep in Spiderman FFH

Hollywood has always used the British accent in movies that take place in ancient Greece and Rome. Being a fellow Greek this doesn't bother me. Growing up my siblings and I always use to make fun of our parents accents. We grew up in a neighborhood with a lot of immigrant families and we all made fun of our parents' accents. The fact that Thor is a comedy it worked better with the "Greek accent".

They had British accents in
Troy
Alexander
Gladiator
Clash Of The Titans (where Zeus wasn't portrayed as a buffoon.)
Immortals
300
Hercules (except for Dwayne Johnson)
Spartacus

Wished the Guardians had been around a little more.

But I didn't dislike Zeus so much. His arrogance made sense as well as his diva type of energy and I liked as well his scene with Thor.

So surprisingly I wasn't too put off with Crowe's portrayal.
