THOR: LOVE AND THUNDER Director Taika Waititi Explains Why He Isn't A Fan Of Director's Cuts: "They Suck"

Don't let the #ReleaseTheSnyderCut crowd know, but Thor: Love and Thunder director Taika Waititi has now made it clear he has no interest in releasing or seeing four-hour Director's Cuts of movies...

Thor: Love and Thunder is less than two hours long, and whether you love or loath the movie, there's simply no denying that it needed to be even longer. The blockbuster moves at a breakneck pace, leaving little time to fully explore its characters or even the ideas at its core (there were a lot of jokes, though).

Natalie Portman has talked about entire characters and planets that were cut, while Christian Bale has revealed he shot scenes with Jeff Goldblum and Peter Dinklage that were M.I.A. in the Thor: Ragnarok sequel.

With that in mind, you might be hoping that filmmaker Taika Waititi has a Director's Cut planned.

Nope.

"Director’s cuts are not good," he revealed during a recent interview with NME. "I’ve been thinking about director’s cuts. I watch director’s cuts of a lot of other directors. They suck. Director’s cuts are not good. Directors need to be controlled sometimes, and if I was to say, ‘ah, you wanna watch my director’s cut? It’s four and a half hours long!’ It’s not good, at four and a half hours. There’s a lot of cup-of-tea breaks in there, you don’t even have to pause it."

As for what a Thor: Love and Thunder Director's Cut might look like, Waititi added, "I’d say my cut would probably have a few more jokes in there. There might be a couple of deleted scenes, but as I always say, a scene is deleted because it’s not good enough to be in the film."

"I think the deleted scenes section on the DVD, not that they use them anymore, should just be a list of the scenes and no links so you can’t click on them!"

We can't say that we necessarily agree with Waititi's comments here as there are lots of Director's Cuts that are vastly better than the original versions (Zack Snyder's Justice League is an obvious recent example). Marvel Studios has a habit of not releasing big deleted scenes - the Doctor Strange sequel springs to mind - but they're clearly not saving them for extended versions!

Hopefully, we'll see more from Thor: Love and Thunder when that home entertainment release rolls around...and it won't just be more jokes.

Thor: Love and Thunder is now playing in theaters.

Bale is great!

@Rosraf - It was from a movie, but it was straight to DVD. Addams Family: Fester's Night Out

Taika is right, to a point. Sometimes a studio butchers the filmmaker's vision after most of it is already filmed. In those cases, a director's cut could be better.

@ClungeAndThunda - Gorr needed more world building in my opinion. I think the opening montage should have been Gorr slaying various gods and in one scene show him killing a God in front of it's followers and then suddenly many of the followers begin to get dusted away and Gorr looks confused as to what's happening. Then we get more of a montage and then a sequence where as Gorr is about to slay another god suddenly followers of said get blipped back and Gorr is baffled as to what is happening. Then we cut to now Korg giving us a rundown of what Thor has been up to after Endgame.

@SonOfAGif - Cool to say maybe but for sure wouldn’t add anything we’d really need for the story. Outside of maybe seeing him taking down a few more gods.

Wait, Etri and Grandmaster aren’t gods right? Wonder why he’d have scenes with them.

@SonOfAGif - it's kinda weird because Scarlet witch went on a killing spree in Marvel's last movie so I'm not sure why they shyed away from showing Gorr killing more god's. I know the films were filming at the same time but Kevin could have given Taika some notes or something.....maybe there's more in the 4hour cut who knoyw but if it's ever released I'd watch it for Bale alone.

@ClungeAndThunda - Just watched it, was good! Gorr was interesting but yeah,a bit more of him wouldn't hurt.

@newhire13 - More than likely he went to the Grandmaster to find a pathway to Eternity without Stormbreaker or brought Stormbreaker to The grandmaster to force him to open a pathway to Eternity. And Eitri could have been strictly to force Eitri to build him a weapon that can summon the bifrost

@kylo0607 -

I knew he was gonna be good but I wasn't ready for how they used him in the shadow realm. For a movie that was choppy during it's first 40 or so minutes, that whole sequence was a master class

@McMurdo - bale was the center of the problems really, i think its pretty cringe he did no real investigation to his character, marvel wanted him in the film so badly that they were willing to throw away the original ideology of the character that was one of the best comic villain runs in a while and hand us this garbage. i thought i disliked Shang Chi but now this is my least favorite mcu film. they just wanted to grab up both literally and figuratively as many children as they can and cash in on a boogeyman story

@kylo0607 - I’m really glad you like it man! I was disappointed mostly because any trouble was fixed with “thunderbolt” , thor acting like an adult with mental problems even though he is 1500 years olds, the kids scene were no one dies just because they are kids even though many of them can be seen dancing and doing nothing during the sequence is eyes rolling also Hemsworth giving the “love” role to his daughter is pretty damn unfair for many in the industry, but is now his franchise so he can do whatever he wants to ruin it. But to be fair is a time in the movies were you can turn of logic off and enjoy a Guns N’ Roses with some good actions.
TheVengeance
TheVengeance - 7/10/2022, 11:04 AM
@kylo0607 - because of Bale, not the writing. And he was criminally Disnified and nerfed. He’s called the god butcher but we only see his first accidental kill. And butchers no one else. There’s not enough scenes with him to make him a profound menacing threat. He should’ve stormed in during the hilarious Russell Crowe scene and just started offing gods left and right with his sword and little shadow spider minions. THAT would have kept the hilarity of the scene but also made it valuable and cool to develop Gorr at the same time with an arena full of rather meaningless “gods”

@TheJester187 - MCU movies in a nut shell
TheVengeance
TheVengeance - 7/10/2022, 11:11 AM
@JustBrootal - what did Bale do wrong? He’s by far the best actor actually taking things seriously and acting in the movie. Russell Crowe was the best comedic actor. Those were the only redeeming aspects to the film. So what are you smoking? Bale didn’t write the character. He performed it. And did it extremely well. His scenes were creepy. Not near enough of them in favor of cheap stupid juvenile humor and not near enough development.
TheVengeance
TheVengeance - 7/10/2022, 11:11 AM

TheVengeance - 7/10/2022, 11:18 AM
@URLMae - why is Thor still “finding himself” at that age and EIGHT movies deep? He feels like a distinctly different character in Thor, Avengers, Dark World, Age of Ultron, and Infinity War … from Ragnorak, Endgame and Love Thunder.
Darkknight2149
Darkknight2149 - 7/10/2022, 1:07 PM
@McMurdo -
I'm still annoyed that they wasted Mads Mikkelsen in Doctor Strange. That could have been our perfect Doctor Doom, who sadly, will probably also be wasted. Either as a great villain that doesn't get used enough or as a cardboard plot device treated as a one-off.

It's honestly time for the MCU to break out of some of its habits and branch out in new directions.
SonOfAGif
SonOfAGif - 7/10/2022, 3:30 PM
@Darkknight2149 - I feel like they are going to use Mads Mikkelson as Dormammu. I'm thinking Dormammu possesses Kaecilius' body to have a human form to battle Strange in the Dark Dimension and outside of it. Basically using his body as a vessel.
newhire13
newhire13 - 7/10/2022, 3:50 PM
@TheVengeance - Because within the past 10 years everything he thought he was/was supposed to be got flipped on its head. He’s questioning things now and being exposed to more things beyond being royalty and Odin’s muscle.

Replacing a cgi character with a person. That sounds like some cheap, tv shit to do.

@newhire13 - smh that doesn’t change who you are, it should reinforce it. Especially as a leader and hero. This happens in Ragnorak and Infinity War then quickly is thrown out the window in Endgame, and now even worse this nonsense we just witness with Love and Thunder

@ClungeAndThunda - we know, he made it clear that he will ruin our mythos in a second.

Also, I love how in interviews he implied that we, fans of Thor comics, would be repulsed by the idea of a romantic Thor story, as if we're some five-year-olds who think kissing a girl is gross.

No, Taika, we're not. We love all the great stories with Thor and Sif, where their relationship is portrayed in the similarly nuanced way as Arowin's and Aragorn's are in LOTR. It's just that your take on a romance Thor story is cringe, that's what we don't like.

CorndogBurglar

@ClungeAndThunda - It makes me wonder how much of this was Marvel and how much of it was Taika.

We know that Thir 1 and 2 were not the highest praised movies by the fans. (I liked them both) So they went in a different direction and made Ragnarok a weird comedy movie out of no where.

But it makes me wonder if Marvel gave it to Taika and told him to do what he wants with it. Or if they told him they want to try something new and to make it funny.

Either way, people loved Ragnarok. (I hated it) So they kept going in that direction and even amped it up.

It kind of feels like Marvel just let Taika off his chain to do whatever he wanted.
