THOR: LOVE AND THUNDER Star Natalie Portman Seemingly Confirms Jane Foster Cancer Storyline

Natalie Portman is releasing a new children's book, but in an interview with Yahoo Movies, the subject of Thor: Love and Thunder quickly came up.

There's a huge amount of excitement surrounding Portman's return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Jane Foster, especially after it was confirmed during last year's San Diego Comic-Con that she will wield Mjolnir as Thor.

Asked if there is anything she can reveal about Taika Waititi's movie, the actress appeared to confirm that it will borrow elements from Jason Aaron's Mighty Thor comic book series. In that story, Jane is battling cancer, but transforming into Thor in secret (which makes her illness worse).

"I can’t tell you that much," Portman started. "I’m really excited. I’m starting to train, to get muscles. If there can be all these female superheroes, the more of them they are, the better it is. I’m trying to think — it’s based on the graphic novel of the Mighty Thor. She’s going through cancer treatment and is a superhero on the side."

Now, it's hard to say for sure whether Portman is talking about the movie or what happens in the comics there, but either way, there's a pretty good chance the Marvel Studios adaptation will stick close enough to the source material in regards to Foster's battle with cancer.

Jane's diagnosis would both explain what brings her back into the God of Thunder's life and how she becomes Thor, and it would be a hard-hitting subject for the MCU to tackle. We'll have to wait and see, but with production kicking off, it hopefully won't be long until we get some official details.

makes sense, the infinity stones give off gamma radiation and she literally had one running through her veins during an entire movie.

For obvious reasons, I thought they might obviate the subject, but after reading a comment or two, it might actually give more respect and weight to the issue.

She could just talking about the storyline but I feel like you don’t mention such a core aspect without it making it into the movie. Idk.

Chadwick makes it a bit raw but this could add some necessary weight and shine a light.

I don't see a problem with adapting the cancer storyline (which is a strong basis of her Thor character).

Maybe Taika doesn't want it, because it wouldn't fit into his ''funny'' movie (like he changed Ragnarok aka the end of everything).

@DARKSIDEIS - Waititi may not be a natural fit for a big massive climactic battle that brings down a kingdom of gods and monsters, but he does seem to love quiet human tragedy with an uplifting tone.

@Spock0Clock - Jojo Rabbit is good proof of that.
Let's hope he won't ruin an interesting character (like he did Skurge).

@DARKSIDEIS - I like skurge but wouldn't exactly call him interesting. Kind of one note. A powerful lackey with a blade that can transverse realms. Thats literally... it

@Vigor - I agree, but he still could have been a cool (yet one-note) villain. In EHM he battled the Hulk and Thor, but here...

What angered me even more, is how they wasted Karl Urban. Such an awesome actor, has only 5 minutes in a movie, and with high probability we won't see him in MCU again. If he was younger, he'd be an awesome Namor.

@DARKSIDEIS - good point. Horrible misuse of Karl Urban!

I'm curious how they're going to approach her transformation. Maybe use some of the same techniques they'll be using to do She-Hulk to add some height/mass?

I wouldn't have a problem if they just gave Foster the costume and let her be a 5'3" Goddess of Thunder, but there was something powerful about seeing her transform back.

Anyway, this is what I've been begging for since I read Mighty Thor: Portman back to deliver a solid grounded performance of some fairly challenging material. I just hope I don't regret wishing for it.

(That probably came across as flip, but I literally mean that Doctor Strange or Wanda could end up inadvertently fixing it.)

I think it might be one of the reasons she took the movie right? I doubt just a straight action role would be of interest to her at this point in her career. I think the cancer storyline gives her some good dramatic material to work with.

It seemed like she was just saying what happened in the comics but I do think they’ll go the cancer route or something similar(with Chadwick actually going through that I don’t think they’d want to look like they’re being distasteful). I do like what people around here are saying about the aether or bifrost causing this, but I hope Thor doesn’t feel guilty about it we’ve had enough of loathing Thor

Natalie Portman can do it, she's a tremendous actress. I just hope Taika doesn't treat it as a gag or joke.

I think she's just referring to what happens in the omics, not so much meaning the same will happen in th movie. Though I do hope it does.
