Alan Taylor Recalls "Wrenching" Experience Marking THOR: THE DARK WORLD For Marvel

Terminator Genisys director Alan Taylor didn't seem particularly happy with Thor: The Dark World when he was promoting the sequel in 2013, and he talks here about what it was like to see Marvel transform his movie into something totally different during post-production...

There are a number of filmmakers who have made it clear they won't work with Marvel again, but also plenty of others who have and will. It sounds like Game of Thrones vet Alan Taylor falls into the former camp based on recent comments in an interview with Uproxx to promote Terminator Genisys. "They were very different," he said when asked to compare his experience working on this movie to working with Marvel on Thor: The Dark World (which has a respectable 65% on RT). "I’ve done two and I’ve learned that you don’t make a $170 million movie with someone else’s money and not have to collaborate a lot. The Marvel experience was particularly wrenching because I was sort of given absolute freedom while we were shooting, and then in post it turned into a different movie. So, that is something I hope never to repeat and don’t wish upon anybody else."

We'll probably never know how much Thor: The Dark World was changed by Marvel, but it's no doubt thanks to them that he was able to helm a movie as big as Terminator Genisys. Who does he have to blame for that movie's tepid reviews? Not the studio, as it turns out that they were a lot more collaborative than Marvel. "This was not like that. The story we started telling is essentially the story we finished and are bringing out into the world. But there was a lot of collaboration, as there is going to be on something this big." What do you think about these comments?

I hated The Dark World, it was awful and boring.
The Frigga parts were the only highlights.

It's sad too because Thor is such a fun Hero.

Have any of you read the synopsis for Terminator Genisys (lol "Genisys")? Maybe the studio on that movie should have kept ole Alan on a tighter leash.

Lol. This guy complains that Marvel changed the movie in post. Maybe if Marvel stepped in a reedited Terminator: Genisys it wouldn't be so crappy.

Funny how with interference thor 2 was better than terminator 5 which was a better experience. Maybe this guy can't direct. Cause some of his GoT episodes with the exception of Baleor aren't the best

While far from a perfect movie, Thor 2 entertained me. At the end of the day, that's all that matters to me. Entertain me. This new Terminator, at the very least, looks entertaining as well.

Alan Taylor should make a smaller movie next, the dude clearly has talent but he's having shit luck with these blockbusters

I do agree that Thor: TDW was a little disappointing. Marvel still hasn't found the right director for the Thor franchise yet. And as much as I love Thor, his MCU movies almost seem obligatory. Unless they go heavy on the tie ins, Ragnarok will be lost the shuffle I'm afraid.

The one big improvement in Thor TDW was the LOOK of everything. Asgard felt huge and lived in, and the armor looked like armor - not rubber - spray painted metallic. The first Thor looks so cheap in retrospect.

Jeremy Jahns just had a review on terminator heard it was bad and you will not remember it in 1 min after you leave so i will not likely to go see it

I rated Thor 2 at a 9/10 when I first saw it, now it's at about a 7 for me.

They cut out some important character development scenes for Malekith. Totally would have made you understand his motives. The 3rd act was terrible. The jokes undercut the danger. Too much Darcy cracking wise. Also the Thor with the chick in the subway scene gave me douche chills.

As is commonly stated on this website, the MCU films have "nerfed" Thor. I like the films, and the actor is great, but they have yet to show us the real measure of the character's powers. I think we have to credit Feige and co. with the knowledge that this is so. In Raganarok, I expect we'll see Thor take off the kid gloves.

What do I think about these comments...I think I'm going to be at my local theater tomorrow night watching Terminator:Genesis...also I knew there had to be reason Thor 2 sucked so bad and now that reason's confirmed.

I mean, Joss Whedon sort of went through the same thing with AoU, but in the long run its all about the presentation of characters and how the studio manages the time to put more emphasis towards those more important factors. T:TDW wasn't that bad, as I did enjoy the little time we all spent in Asgard along with one other realm, but there were some things that were just weakening the film. I love Natalie Portman but the entire "lady in distress" (or should I say "lady that's possessed"? No?) gig was just another way to get her involved back in Thor's life and etc, would've loved to see Lady Sif and Thor get more chemistry. But yeah all in all I think everyone can agree on the simple fact that we all NEED to get off of Earth in the Thor movies. Marvel can do better, as I've seen them do better. Give us the "God of Thunder"



...with his helmet. ;)

I couldn't agree more. I was expecting a vastly different film, and even more so following the announcement that Alan Taylor had been chosen to direct, given all of his work on Game of Thrones.

@TheOracularNerd i totally agree my thing is if it features earth its already bad we want the helment i hope they go all out for infinity war and give everyone there right comic material and we will have the greatest movie on our hands
