THUNDERBOLTS: Lucasfilm May Have Stopped Marvel Studios From Announcing Harrison Ford's Casting At D23

Rumour has it Star Wars' Harrison Ford is set to join the MCU as General "Thunderbolt" Ross, and a new report claims that Lucasfilm's desire to focus on Indiana Jones 5 is why that wasn't confirmed at D23.

Last week, a very interesting rumour started doing the rounds suggesting that Marvel Studios might be eyeing Star Wars icon Harrison Ford to play the new General "Thunderbolt" Ross in Thunderbolts. William Hurt originally played the military antagonist in the MCU, but passed away earlier this year; since then, the assumption has been that Ross might be killed off-screen.

Instead, the plan seems to be to continue telling Ross' story, something comic book fans hope will culminate in him transforming into the villainous Red Hulk in Thunderbolts.

Now, Jeff Sneider has elaborated on his scoop on The Hot Mic podcast (via ActioNewz.com), claiming that Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy pushed for Marvel Studios to hold off on announcing anything at D23. Why? Understandably, she hoped to keep the focus on next year's Indiana Jones 5.

"So, what I initially heard is that this was a done deal for D23, that they actually wanted to announce him as a cast member in Thunderbolts at D23," he explains. "They didn't because Kathleen Kennedy put her foot down and said, 'No, we're going to keep the focus on Indiana Jones 5 content.'"

"'I don't want this to become Harrison Ford joining the MCU, we're going to keep the focus on Indy 5 right now.'"

That does add up, and there's no denying that Ford signing up to join the MCU would have taken a lot of attention away from the next instalment of the Indiana Jones franchise. Hopefully, this rumour is true because it's incredibly exciting, and we're hoping some sort of official announcement will come our way from the trades soon.

While Hurt delivered a memorable portrayal of the General in The Incredible HulkCaptain America: Civil WarAvengers: Infinity War, and Black Widow, the character played a small enough role in the MCU that recasting him wouldn't be overly jarring. Only time will tell whether this rumour is true, but we're going to keep an eye on this one.

Thunderbolts is set to be released in theatres on July 26, 2024. As for Indiana Jones 5, that's heading our way on June 30, 2023.

@TheFireForce - I'm sure Harrison doesn't want to put on a motion capture suit

@TheFireForce -
Get Sam Elliot. Him and William Hurt were both perfect casting.

@TheFireForce - As much as I like Harrison Ford, I do not like this casting if it's true.

@Darkknight2149 - I'd be okay with Sam Elliot but I would like someone more intense for the role. I loved general Ross as a character in comics and the cartoon series because he wanted the Hulk at almost any cost! Elliot was def more intimdating than Hurt but didnt quite bring the intensity as I had hoped for. Still a 1000x better than Ford.

Well, I'm sure KK has some stroke but it was probably more like she asked them not to instead of putting her foot down. The Marvel juggernaut is a little bit stronger than Star Wars at the moment on the big screen. I'm sure if they wanted to be dicks about it, Marvel could have gotten away with it.

I’m not saying this isn’t true, but it doesn’t make any sense if it is. Why cast an 80 year old actor who famously doesn’t like reprising roles?

@HAILHYDRA - He just doesn't like replaying Han. He thinks Han should've died in empire and that's it.

@ProfessorWhy - I was just about to say this. Why go for someone who is old and can't play the role for many years? That's another William Hurt situation again.

He doesn’t fit Ross at all

That being said, you don’t have to recast. This is the perfect time to bring in Henry Gyrich as a replacement

We can replace Thunderbolt Ross but cant get another King T’challa. Sad times.

After the last Indiana Jones you'd think they'd want as much attention drawn away as possible.

I'll just leave this here for all the crying SJW snowflakes so offended that Ross is being replaced but T'Challa wasn't.

I don’t believe this rumor and if it ends up being true, why can Ross be recast after an actor death and not Black Panther?

I could honestly see this casting working g out pretty well, but I think it should be the end for General Ross. Perhaps have Mr. Ford for one appearance turning into an unstable, savage Red Hulk that gets put down for good at the end of the film.

Did you guys see the leaked Indiana 5 trailer? Not great quality but de-aged Ford looks like Indy from The Last Crusade.
