GODZILLA X KONG Director Adam Wingard On Whether The Live-Action THUNDERCATS Movie Will Be His Next Project

GODZILLA X KONG Director Adam Wingard On Whether The Live-Action THUNDERCATS Movie Will Be His Next Project

Will Adam Wingard helm another MonsterVerse movie following Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, or will he and Warner Bros. finally pull the trigger on their eagerly anticipated live-action ThunderCats film?

Adam Wingard, the director of Godzilla vs. Kong, first signed up to adapt the classic 1980s ThunderCats animated series into a live-action motion picture all the way back in March 2021. And other than the original announcement that Wingard would be directing it for Warner Bros., not much else has been revealed about the project.

After his work on Godzilla vs. Kong, Wingard returned to the MonsterVerse with Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, which opens in North American theaters at the end of the month.

In a promotional interview for The New Empire, Wingard revealed that he quietly finished the most recent draft of the ThunderCats script just before starting production on the MonsterVerse movie. But now that his obligation for The New Empire is just about up, what's next for Wingard?

Speaking to io9, Wingard stated, "Simon [Barrett] and I are still actively working on the script. We finished our last draft basically right when I was going into production on this movie and we just had to put everything on hold. [But] right now we’re actively working on it again. So whether that means that’s the next thing I do or [not], I’m not sure. But it’s definitely one of the top priorities I have right now in terms of working on a script.

As Wingard mentioned above, he'll direct from a script co-written by his frequent collaborator, Simon Barrett (You’re Next, The Guest).

Advance sales for Dynamite Entertainment's recent comic book relaunch of the ThunderCats provides solid indication that interest in the classic Rankin Bass animated series remains high so WB and Wingard likely shouldn't hold off too long on moving forward with the film.

Debuting in 1985, the ThunderCats were a popular animated series that ran for 4 seasons, totaling 130 episodes.  A 2011 reboot of the series aired on Cartoon Network for 26 episodes before being canceled due to poor merchandise sales. Likewise, a Teen Titans Go!-inspired third reboot, 2020's ThunderCats Roar, also failed to gain traction with audiences.

It should also be noted that there's no guarantee that the ThunderCats movie will be the next film that Wingard directs. He's also signed on to helm a remake of the 1997 John Travolta and Nicolas Cage sci-fi action-thriller, Face/Off.

Plus, if The New Empire proves successful, there's no guarantee that Wingard won't sign on to helm another MonsterVerse film. Godzilla vs Kong earned $470 million at the box office in 2021, during a time when WB opted to release films simultaneously on HBO Max, due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Early box office tracking for the film indicates that The New Empire will greatly exceed the previous film's earnings.

Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire arrives in theaters on March 29.

I’d love to be proven wrong, but this strikes me as a property that absolutely does not need a live action version

@Izaizaiza - You're probably right, but i think it could be done if they find the right people to get it done. And i don't have faith in this team lol. They should leave it alone.

@Izaizaiza - agreed. Anthropomorphism is something that rarely, if ever works in live-action. Rather see it with a unique animation style

God , I hope this happens though my big concern is I hope they don’t end up looking like those things from CATS lol.

I also would like them to take some inspiration from the short lived Thundercats 2011 show that was unfortunately cancelled , I liked it and wish it went on longer than it did.

Anyway going by his work on the Monsterverse , I do think Wingard is a good choice from atleast a visual standpoint..

It needs to be big , bold & colorful and he can do that!!.

@TheVisionary25 - the 2011 version was great for me. I wish it was picked on Netflix or another streaming service to continue the story. Highly doubt it but it was a good show

Live action Thundercats.

Proving Hollyweird never runs out of stupid ideas.

So we get a black cat, an Asian cat, a Hispanic cat(We better!), a trans super gay left-handed rainbow cat, and a token brutally conservative Honkey cat.

@DocSpock - Thundercats is actually a natural fit for a diverse cast considering they were all different kinds of cats to begin with

Aah okay.

I know nothing about them. They didn't exist when I was a kid watching cartoons in the 60s.

@HashTagSwagg - Exactly what I was thinking.
They need to stop calling these movies "live action" when 50%+ of the shots are cgi.

Still waiting for the Taylor Swift Butthole Cut here. 🤪

@HashTagSwagg - THIS! Thundercats are one of those properties that don’t work in Live action. They’re humanoid but not enough and it sets up a weird psychological separation from the movie when done in Live Action.

SATW42
SATW42 - 3/18/2024, 10:43 AM
@dracula - Well Office Space is my obvious first answer, The Ninja Turtles movies from the 90s higest grossing independent movie ever for a long time, The first Flintstones movie, Scooby Doo was a successful franchise, there are people who actually adore the Jim Carrey Grinch, The first Transformers was a massive success, oh Caspar was good! Jungle book, alot of people here really like Alita, Dennis the Menace, oh Dora and the Lost City of gold was actually really fun! um Josie and the pussycats, Does detective Pikachu count?
HashTagSwagg
HashTagSwagg - 3/18/2024, 10:44 AM
@dracula - It's gonna come down to taste but at least 60% of the first Transformers film is solid. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (1990) (they do take things from the comic so im not sure if it counts), Casper (1995), The first scobby doo, again it's gonna be a a taste thing but I thought it did a good job of keeping it entertaining for young and older fans. The Grinch (Jim Carrey). George of the Jungle.

@marvel72 - thats debatable

First film decent, but extremely flawed

All down hill from there

If we are talking box office success, then yes, they worked for 4 movies

Thundercats was the first sci-fi/fantasy property I fell in love with as a kid. More than He-Man. Before I loved Star Wars, Marvel, DC or anything else. I have a picture of myself at about 3-4 years old wearing Thundercats PJs. I have always had a soft spot for this property. That first reboot they did about 10 years ago was decent. Never watched the second more kiddy reboot.

With all that being said, I would absolutely LOVE a great theatrical adaptation, I just don’t see how it can be done unless it’s all CGI or animated. Car people just don’t look good. Never have. Really the best example is probably the Avatar movies, and those are virtually CGI cartoons anyway.

If they can’t make the actual Thundercats look good, then nothing else matters.

@mountainman - *cat people gosh darn it.
SATW42
SATW42 - 3/18/2024, 10:47 AM
@mountainman - I think it's easy for thundercats to not necessarily look like cat people because for the most part they aren't really furry, which I think makes the uncanny valley of it all worse for some reason. Like, Lion-O just looks like a ripped dude with cat eyes
mountainman
mountainman - 3/18/2024, 10:56 AM
@SATW42 - I guess that’s a fairly good point. They have more human like bodies than many cat people do.

I just think this property is very difficult to adapt well. Harder than Masters of the Universe even.

We will wait and see a) if this happens and b) if it’s a good adaptation.

Glad to see these two, much like Benson and Moorehead(Moon Knight, Loki and Daredevil: Born Again) graduate from the indie horror scene and get attached to big studio fare.

Always thought they were grounded storytellers and to see them bring their sensibilities to big budgeted stuff, makes me hopeful that they one-day return to their roots and deliver some sig studio horror. Much like how Derrickson and Cargill did with Doctor Strange then go a do Black Phone and a segment on the lateset V/H/S.

@MarkIJulian the AI you used this time, Lion-O head doesn’t even connect to his spine.

At this point too, you’re just being a dick.
