BUMBLEBEE Director Travis Knight Explains Why A G1 Version Of Megatron Was Cut From The Movie

As seen in the trailers for Bumblebee, one of the movie's best moments comes when we visit Cybertron and see the G1 versions of various Autobots and Decepticons. Why doesn't Megatron make an appearance?

During Bumblebee, we get to spend a little bit of time on Cybertron and see some incredible live-action G1 versions of the Autobots and Decepticons. Unfortunately, there's one character notable by his absence and that's Transformers' lead villain Megatron.

During a recent interview, director Travis Knight revealed that he originally planned to include the iconic big bad in his prequel/spinoff but that idea was scrapped when he realised that a continuity issue meant it simply wouldn't make any sense (that also proves that Bumblebee isn't meant as a reboot).

"I had this whole thing boarded where we’re where we see Megatron and he comes in like Sauron, just blowing sh*t up and laying waste to everything," he said. "However, we then realized in this world, Megatron is currently frozen on Earth, as seen in 2007's Transformers, so that was out."

That's a real shame as it would have been very cool seeing this Megatron design brought to life on the big screen, and fans probably wouldn't have complained about the slight mixup in the timeline because most would rather forget Michael Bay's movies anyway

Do you wish we'd seen the G1 Megatron in Bumblebee? Share your thoughts down below.

Should've just ignored the 2007 film and create something new from scratch with this.

It entered production as a prequel to the Bay series. By the time they realized that 'The Last Knight' was not going to make enough money - they decided to make this film a partial reboot, changing aspects such as the aesthetic of certain characters, timeline changes, etc...

This is why some elements line-up with the Bay series while others do not. It has potential to either be viewed as a prequel or a reboot at the moment. This remark in particularly is likely because the idea was to make the film somewhat unclear in that regards.

@Scarilian - If that's the case then why is the director so worried about continuity issues?

@CorndogBurglar - Because Mikey Bay built such an awesome Transformers mythology that we can appreciate for many decades to come.

Interesting how he's worried about the Megatron continuity issue, yet he's perfectly fine with having Optimus Prime show up on Earth in the 80's even though he clearly lands on Earth in the 2007 movie.

Or how Bumblebee is shown landing on Earth in the 80's even though he was shown to be here during WW2 in another film.

I really can't stand films that can't even follow their own continuity.

Slightly OT: I just found what might be the greatest Transformers movie review ever written.

@MUTO123 - I think I might agree with it being an amazing review. Reminds me of the Patrick H Willems videos about Bay

@MalseMarcel - OMG, this is one of the the greatest reviews ever written! Reminds me of a great review of Van Helsing starring Hugh Jackman (remember that one?!) which described it as a bunch of film throwing cash at a wall and seeing what sticks. It also examined the number of times the movie used a rope attached to a non existent off screen point to allow the characters to escape or attack someone. Pure gold!

I think it works better as a reboot. Bumblebee was already on Earth during WWII and Prime wasnt there until 2007

He’s being diplomatic, and someone at the studio or Hasbro probably left the note about Megatron being frozen on Earth and insisted they had to stick with it. Note that he said “I had this idea” and then “we realized... so that was out.”

Much like WB and the DCEU, this was a series that has made too much money to completely reboot for fear of offending existing fans. As with the Joker movie or the idea that they’ll try to do a Supergirl movie to avoid giving a straight answer on Affleck or Cavill, the studio just wanted to punt on the issue while still getting product into the theaters.

Who really gives a damn about the continuity of the Michael Bay movies?! Even Bay himself didn't care about those movies!

By the way, has anybody noticed Megatron’s headpiece looks like a solid metal helmet version of Prince Adam/He-Man’s hairdo? Coincidence? I think not!

This was a bit disappointing to hear. I was hoping this was a back door reboot, where they conveniently forgot about the previous movies.

@Philvis - they can have it be a reboot once they realize how well this one will (hopefully) do. When they were writing the script they didn't plan it as one

I know there are people here who love the Bay movies (I hope you all get the help you need). However...would anyone have cared if we got a kick-ass G1 Megatron (ala 1987 movie opening) transforming into the hand of Starscream??? I mean, this "series" continuity isn't exactly flawless as it is, nor are the Bay movies' "continuity" something the fans will cry havoc over if broken by this soft reboot.
