BUMBLEBEE: Hailee Steinfeld's Female Protagonist Was Legendary Filmmaker Steven Spielberg's Idea.

In the past, filmmaker Michael Bay struggled to deliver on strong female protagonists, often being met with controversy over their portrayals. Thankfully, Spielberg’s fresh idea hopes to right the ship.

Transformers has not had a great relationship when it comes to female characters. More specifically, director Michael Bay has been met with endless criticism regarding feminine visuals. Transformers: The Last Knight attempted to fix the problem within the franchise with Isabela Moner’s young heroine, but the individual’s purpose in the film lacked logic and purpose.

In the upcoming Transformers spinoff, Bumblebee, Paramount Pictures and Hasbro have set their sights on fixing this problem. While the studio was breaking ground on where the series could go next, none other than Steven Spielberg introduced the concept for a fearless female lead paired with the loveable Autobot.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura talked about Spielberg's involvement, as well as Hailee Steinfeld's performance in the film.

Steven had always had an idea that a young girl and Bumblebee would be a great combination, so we headed in that direction. I’m just amazed at how talented she is. I don’t think I’ve ever seen an actor never miss a beat for the entire shoot. It was crazy. We ended up ahead of schedule because she was just so on it all the time.

Though Shia LaBeouf did a fantastic job interacting with the robots in disguise, Wahlberg left something to be desired. From the producer's excitement it seems that Steinfeld may even top both veteran actors. Director Travis Knight, fans are rooting for you to make this one work.

"Transformers: The Last Knight attempted to fix the problem within the franchise with Isabela Moner’s young heroine, but the individual’s purpose in the film lacked logic and purpose."

THIS 100%. There's a point where Wahlberg and all the military guys are riding a helicopter into battle and they find out her and her stupid BB-8 rip-off buddy have snuck on board. Wahlberg asks "What are you doing here?", and she replies with "I don't know".

When you're making a movie and your character is so unnecessary that even she doesn't know why she's there, you've got a serious [frick]ing problem.

"Wahlberg left something to be desired."

Didn't everything in those movies, though?

Interesting to hear about Steinfeld, but after letting Michael Bay turn Transformers into a punchline for three movies (and then join in on that mockery for two more), why would anyone give two shits about what a movie studio did with the franchise?

Transformers is undoubtedly a difficult property to take seriously on its own artistic and narrative merits, but they barely tried at all. And now, we're stuck with Bay's scars on the franchise... apparently forever.

...I'm just glad Beast Wars never got dragged into this.

Can't wait, the 4th movie was bullshit, didn't watchted the 5th but I'm sure it'a also bullshit, the first one was good but what I didn't like is Sam Witwicky and all the patriotism ("you are now a soldier")

1. Transformers
2. Transformers 3
3. Transformers 2
4. Transformers 4

@IcemanX - 5 is honestly kinda beautiful in terms of how stupid and inept it is. I think if you did the exact opposite of every single thing that's done in that movie, you'd actually have a pretty good movie.

I'd actually recommend you watch it, but under the right circumstances i.e. wait until it's free to watch, get some friends to come over, bust out some beer, watch it and laugh your asses off.

@IcemanX - I don't even consider the Last Knight a Transformer movie. It was just a bunch of shit thrown together that made no sense and turned into a bigger pile of shit.

@A2ron - I think the Weekly Planet guys were right when they said that it started off as some script about a British woman learning she was descended from King Arthur and someone stripped down the script and put in some robots. It was just baffling to watch.

(Fell asleep in the last hour so I have no idea how it turned out, but I assume the entire Earth was destroyed.)

@Spock0Clock - They thought it was stipped down? It felt more like Bay had his writers room come up with scripts for 5 or 6 different movies and didn’t know which one to use, so he just used ALL of them.

Tangentially related, but I've been in a bit of a mecha mood (watching 80's Gundam series will do that to you), and I've been looking around to see if I've missed any notable ones. As ridiculous as I thought Pacific Rim's "side-by-side" mech piloting was... Darling in the Franxx definitely outdid them...

...It's like Neon Genesis: Doggy-Style, you guys...

Will this subgenre ever gets its head out of it's ass and finally get some big-screen love? It kills me that Bay's Transformers, Pacific Rim, and whatever Cameron does with Avatar are still likely to be the only notice Hollywood gives giant robots...

I'm not surprised at all. She was so good in True Grit that she actually gave Jason Bourne, Thanos and The Dude a run for their money. She was awesome in that.

No one watches Transformers for the human characters.

@MitcHendricks - While personally I don't know why anyone watches these Transformers movies at all, the human characters are there for a reason, and take up an immense amount of the screen time.

I watched this video series about the Transformers movies, and this video in particular really made me think about what Bay was trying to say with the human (in this case male) characters: (hint: not exactly good things).

Specifically, I hadn't heard that Turturro had based his character on Bay himself, which just puts an extra layer of head-screw on it.

I finished watching the Bumblebee trailer thinking, "What is this? The Shape of Gasoline?" I'm a little hyped about Bumblebee and Starscream having their original looks, though they still have a mute Bumblebee. Also, that Hailey Steinfeld is pretty hot, although she's only a few years past half my age.
