TRANSFORMERS: THE LAST KNIGHT Will Have A “Very Direct Relationship” With Paramount’s Planned Spinoffs

Thus far, Paramount Pictures has released five Transformers films – all of which have been directed by Michael Bay. Even though these movies haven’t been critically acclaimed (only averaging a 32% on Rotten Tomatoes), they have grossed a strong $3 billion overall at the box office. 

It was previously announced that after Transformers: The Last Knight makes its way into theaters next year, a Bumblebee spinoff will hit the big screen in 2018, followed by a sixth Transformers film that is currently scheduled for a 2019 release. After that, who knows what Paramount will throw on the table?

During Collider's recent set visit, producer Lornezo di Bonaventura spoke on The Last Knight, and revealed whether or not that film will have connections to the planned spinoffs. “Sometimes is the answer. It’s not always, because I think then it feels like you’re really trying to widget it all together, and it becomes a little too neat.” He then added, “But I think – I don’t think, I know – some of the things will have a very direct relationship. You’ll see some things in here that are laying a pipe. You won’t necessarily know that it’s laying a pipe for another movie, but it’s there.”

 Even though the fifth Transformers movie will clearly pave the way for future films,  Bonaventura assures that The Last Knight will be its own movie. “We’re not making this movie  to setup the other movies. That’s what I’m trying to say. If you get too carried away with  that, you stop thinking about this movie.” Bonaventura then talked more about The Last  Knight, and revealed that the upcoming film gives the writers an opening to explore many  different aspects of the Transformers universe going forward:

“And this movie, the two lines of mythology in a sense give you freedom to go a lot of different places later on that may or may not directly relate to another movie, but it’s opening up the universe in a way that I think, in that way it’s probably the most provocative, in terms of the movie. It’s opening a really large universe of what Transformers is, and where they’ve come from, and how we relate to them, and how they relate to themselves.”

Well, if Optimus Prime does kill Bumblebee in next year's film, I guess we can go ahead and cross his spinoff film off the list. But then again, that might be the opening the writer's room need to get Bumblebee's solo outing started! What do you think? Share your thoughts below!
