Variety reported earlier today that ABC is looking at a new prospective comedy show from
The Daily Show and
The Nightly Show's own
Larry Wilmore (who was also initially set to showrun ABC's hit comedy
Black-ish, before having to leave due to scheduling issues) and Egyptian comedian
Bassem Youssef. A brief synopsis reads as follows:
The untitled series centers on the Sharif family, an ordinary Middle Eastern American family with two superhero parents at a time when it’s illegal to be a superhero, so they are forced to save the world in secret. The show will highlight some of the issues that immigrant families face when it comes to fitting into a society that at many times treats you like the enemy.
Youssef also briefly commented on the show himself, saying the following:
“To have ABC challenge the narrative and stereotypes that have long stuck to people in my region is something spectacular to say the least. To have only terrorist roles available for us one day, then get to play superheroes the next, is ground breaking. I am grateful to work with, Larry Wilmore, one of the most talented writers and producers in the market. SCH is unprecedented, culture-defining, and entertaining for the whole family.”
While it had been speculated for a long time that an adaptation of the Kamala Khan incarnation of Ms. Marvel was in the works for ABC, it would seem reasonable to assume should this show be picked up any chances of Kamala appearing on ABC would certainly be squashed.
This show also signifies another superhero show at ABC without Marvel's involvement, as it joins the previously announced reboot of The Greatest American Hero as prospective comedies for ABC's next pilot season. While Inhumans has been soured in both reviews and ratings, and ABC reportedly being less keen on the future of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D, if the SVP of Marvel Television Karim Zreik is true in the development of a 'female-focused' Marvel show for the network holds true, the presence of Marvel on ABC doesn't seem to be ending any time soon, though it will have more competition.
