We may never see another Blade Runner movie after the inexplicable under-performance of Denis Villeneuve's 2049, but fans will be able to return to the neon-lit world of dystopian Los Angeles in a new anime series called Black Lotus.

Crunchyroll and Adult Swim are partnering with Alcon Television Group to produce and distribute the show, which is set 2032 - 13 years after the events of Ridley Scott's original. Plot details are still under wraps, but we do know that the series will feature "a few familiar faces" from the Blade Runner universe.

I first saw ‘Blade Runner’ in 1982, at age 11. It has remained one of the defining films of my life,” said Jason DeMarco, SVP/creative director of Adult Swim on-air. “To be able to explore more of this universe, with the incredible talent we have on board, is a dream come true.”

All 13 30-minute episodes of Blade Runner - Black Lotus will air on Adult Swim's Toonami programming block. No premiere date has been announced.

@GeneralZod - And blood-black nothingness began to spin... A system of cells interlinked within cells interlinked within cells interlinked within one stem... And dreadfully distinct against the dark, a tall white fountain played.

A good get for Adult Swim, now will "fans" of the series go out and support it to make sure it gets ratings instead of a pink slip while they tell everyone how great it is while no one watches it like their box office #'s.

Everything lately seems to be going into the animation area in one way or another. Not complaining just making an observation.

@BlackBeltJones - That's true, I'm also on the same boat when it is not possible on live action and as long as the story is told well.

Maybe it's just me...but I was really disappointed in Blade Runner 2049, so, I have high hopes for the anime. That should be cool.

I'm sure they can fit it in between filler episodes of Naruto.

I've yet to see FLCL3, but with Space Dandy and FLCL2 Toonami's original anime track record is very solid. Bring on more Blade Runner!!

2049 is one of the worst films I've ever had the displeasure of sleeping through. I just kept waking up thinking "when will this end?!".

I think people just jumped on the bandwagon with this one. The critics called it decent but the general public were just plain bored.
