Will INVINCIBLE Season 2 Begin Streaming On Amazon This Year?

Fans of Amazon's Invincible superhero series have been wondering when season 2 of the popular animated show will begin streaming, and actor J.K. Simmons may have just shed some light on the subject!

In an interview earlier this month, Showrunner Simon Racioppa offered an update on Invincible seasons 2 and 3 while discussing The Boys Presents: Diabolical. While he made it clear that the team has been working on it for quite some time, the COVID pandemic was still slowing things down, and Racioppa didn't have any dates to share

According to a recent interview Discussing Film had with Omni-Man voice actor J.K. Simmons, season 2 of Invincible may not begin sreaming until next year. This would surely dissapoint fans of the Amazon animated series as the first three episodes of Invincible Season 1 began streaming just shy of a year ago (March 26th, 2021). The good news is that it very well could be sooner, as the cast and crew will be heading back to the recording booths "very soon".

"Again, always wary of spoilers, but I think I’m allowed to say that we’re going back to work very soon in the recording booth," Simmons shared while discussing the Invincible Season 2 timeframe. "Now, the lag between us doing our first recordings and the animation being completed is obviously many months and probably more than a year, I would guess. But, yes, Invincible is getting to work in earnest and season two is imminent, I will say. There’s a nice vague term."

While discussing the critic and fan reaction to the first season, Simmons added; "Honestly, because I didn’t know the source material before it was sent to me when I signed on to do Invincible, I was surprised at the impact that it had. It was like most animated things, in that there’s extra freedom there to explore and feel free to take really bold risks. To take the director’s vision and go really far with it in any direction because you know, ultimately, they’re going to make the choices. It was really fun, and I had some really wonderful actors to work with in Steven [Yeun] and Sandra [Oh], and a great cast as a lot of animated projects are getting these days. So I’m looking forward to getting back to work on them."

Be sure to check out the full interview over at Discussing Film, as the actor also discusses Spider-Man: No Way Home, playing Commissioner Gorden in Batgirl, and more!

Based on the groundbreaking comic book from Robert Kirkman, the creator of The Walking Dead, Invinicble follows 17-year-old Mark Grayson (Steven Yeun), who’s just like every other guy his age — except his father is the most powerful superhero on the planet, Omni-Man (J.K. Simmons). The hour-per-episode series also stars Sandra Oh, Zazie Beetz, Gillian Jacobs, Zachary Quinto, Jason Mantzoukas, Melise, Mark Hamill, Mahershala Ali, Seth Rogen and more.

Thats...kind of weird. You'd think part of the benefit of it being animated would be that it's faster to produce. And it's not like writing would be that involved since it's almost word for word from the comics, with parts just switched around.

Maybe they didn't think it would be as successful so they waited for the episodes to start coming out before planning season 2? Or maybe they went back to the drawing board after hearing what fans had to say about some of the changes they did make *coughambercough*.

@Origame - It’s very likely that they’ve got a bigger budget to work with now. The story is going to get more ambitious now too, which means lots more material to create, and more art to be done by all the teams involved. Animation has gotten a lot more complex so it wouldn’t surprise me at all if it really is out next year.

@DTor91 - yeah but invincible is going for a much more simplistic and traditional art style.

@Waddles - I do think covid might play a part in it. It's hard to say without any actual word, but we usually hear something like delays so I think it's more due to late planning.

@Origame -
I'd hope that Season 2 and 3 are being done simultaneously as they were both announced at the same time, but given this level of pacing we might be getting a season every two years.

Amber should be phased out of the story in order to explore the dynamic between Mark and other characters, Amber always made herself the focus and that really dragged down the story. Her actions as a character have made me repulsed by the idea of watching another episode with her in it - so hopefully she's not the focus of Season 2.

The first season really didn't get the love and attention it deserved. Heck even this site barely covered it.

@DanielPlainviewsGhost - It seems like one that flew under the radar... I absolutely LOVED it, but there just wasn't a lot of press coverage around it.

Could very well be as @Origame described (they weren't expecting much from it)...

@NateBest - I think a lot of people (not this site but in general) wrote it off cause it's animated. But those who saw it loved it.
