Anchorman Director Adam McKay To Direct The Boys Movie?

Filmschoolrejects had a few words with A Nightmare On Elm St Director Samuel Bayer who previously expressed interest in the film but has now revealed that McKay is in the running...

In an earlier article Bayer said how much he would love to direct the upcoming(hopefully) adaptation of Garth Ennis' controversial comic series The Boys. But in an interview with filmschoolrejects, he said that the producers have someone else in mind...

“It’s so funny, I would die to do that comic book. From what I’ve heard from the producers on the movie is that Adam McKay is doing it. He did Anchorman, I guess. The studio is really hot on him and…..let’s have the movie come out this weekend and do really well. Then we’ll see how my stock is in Hollywood.”

So Bayer still has a shot depending on how well Elm St performs..or doesn't. I don't think it looks to be up to much myself but this guy seems really passionate about getting a faithful adap of The Boys up on the screen so depending on how capable he is of course, I'd like to see his film do well. McKay on the other hand may not seem like a good fit. All of his previous films have been comedies, most featuring Will Ferrel and all(except for Anchorman) not exactly what you would call gut bustlingly funny. And although The Boys would certainly contain some humor, its mainly pretty sick and very dark. But, every director deserves a shot at breaking away from their usual style so who knows. I just hope it gets made so maybe we will finally see Preacher:)

For the uninitiated...

This is going to hurt! In a world where costumed heroes soar through the sky and masked vigilantes prowl the night, someone’s got to make sure the “supes” don’t get out of line. And someone will! Billy Butcher, Wee Hughie, Mother’s Milk, The Frenchman, and The Female are The Boys: A CIA-backed team of very dangerous people, each one dedicated to the struggle against the most dangerous force on Earth - superpower! Some superheroes have to be watched. Some have to be controlled. And some of them, sometimes, need to be taken out of the picture. That’s when you call in The Boys!

Guess that explains why Rob Corddry is interested in being in the movie as well. Almost kind of, sorta confirms that Mckay is doing it. Never would have picked him but like you said Ror...

Well gtrman, now you have:)

Up, yeah its good..not as good as Preacher but pretty damn good. I found it got a bit ridiculous after issue 25 or so, but thats Ennis for ya.

Dogs, forgot about Corddry sniffing around for s role, wouldn't seem like a coincidence! I hope he doesn't cast all of his regular goofs and make it a frakkin comedy!

Quotes from Anchorman. Out of all the comedies I've seen, I quote that film the most by far with my buds :)

haha, oh right, didn't cop that at all. I have only seen it once and pissed myself laughing at about 3 scenes.. the rest, meh. I think its a bit over rayed to be honest. But those bits I did find funny were priceless.

I enjoy the Boys, though it's not for everyone.I can't see them doing a direct translation, as it contains a ridiculous amount of gratuitous sex and violence. Most of the characters involved are assholes.

Any chance on an article like this that a synopsis of what the comic is about could be included? I know we can google it, but being it is more obscure, it would be nice to have it included in the article for reference. :-)

Just checked it out and it sounds pretty cool. A CIA Black Ops organization that keeps superheroes in check. Not your average superhero comic.

Mckay's films are hilarious, c'mon ror. Anchorman = classic, Taladega Nights = hilarious, Step Brothers = another classic, not to mention producing Danny Mcbrides Eastbound and Down which is really bloody funny. And let's not forget that John Favreau did comedies (and still does do comedies) before he did Iron Man and that turned out brilliantly. Let's not rule McKay out just yet.

Ranger, I was going to but this is a follow up article to another one I did on Bayer wanting to direct it so I left the synopsis out..but I forgot how obscure The Boys is, I'll add it in.

Boekelaar, I actually thought both Talledega Nights and Step Brothers were about as funny as a burning orphanage. I thought they tried too hard for laughs or something..anyway I know i'm in the minority, just not my cuppa.

Hope they don't go the way of "Wanted" and pussify this. The bpoys is awesome but lots of violence and even rape so I'd be afraid the studio would tame it down to the point of being redundant.

I actually wouldn't mind if a great deal of things were changed for the movie, so long as the basic outline remains the same.

Eh, I'm now somewhat tempted to do a fancast thing.

RorMachine@ No worries...just a suggestion. Hopefully the smiley face indicated I wasn't complaining. I guess I missed the first article. I need to check this out now, so thanks for sharing!

Since when is a burning orphanage not funny?

Talladega Nights sucked IMO. Step Brothers has been on cable all month so that one is growing on me...
